Re: Montreal Meetup - September 15

Hello ! Would anyone be interested in a Montreal meetup this summer ? [...] Just saw this, I don't log often these days. Yeah, I'd be down. I'm busy all week & weekend, but after that I'll have more time. I'm on the south shore but I often bike into the city, so we can do something on the islan...

Re: Dumpster Diving

1x hardtail MTB fork+frame circa 2007 (this one just sold though) 4x wheels, some with tire+tube (IIRC rear 24", rear 26, front 700c and front 630) 2x drop bars 1x rear rack (I keep 2 others, in case!) 1x pair of mud guards (the 100% useless ones that clip/strap on the seat post and down tube) ...

Re: Dumpster Diving

First time ever for him, he was quite curious and excited to try this. Super glad to see you got to convince him and all is well. That's a nice bounty. Here I have gotten a free bike (ten speed) a month or two ago: bent fork, crappy rear wheel, but a bunch of free parts to maintain my winter beater...

Re: Montreal Meetup - September 15

Great idea. I'd suggest Récréo-Parc, in Sainte-Catherine, it's close, it's nice and there's the river right along it. The parking costs $, but you can park in the streets outside of it for free, we can meet outside, and we can walk into the park for free. If that's fine for you, I'd suggest 1PM, mee...

Re: Montreal Meetup - September 15

Yes, sure. Any time would be good for me. What do you prefer? Since few others appear interested, shall we stay on the south shore?

Re: Something From Nothing Log

@Colibri Ah, I'll just keep it, slap some panniers on it and make it my "nice" bike. I have three others for now: a. jump bike; b. dirty all-seasons everyday utility bike c. franken-spare-bike with overtight geometry. I think it's too many, I'll probably sell the last one. And yeah, front ...

Re: Something From Nothing Log

@Colibri Super glad for you, sounds like such a fun plan. This region looks so beautiful, it must be nice to ride there. I guess you can pick a tent most anywhere, too. Keep me posted on your adventure. And yeah, it's always surprising, people throw away perfectly good stuff. I just harvested one, a...

I have been very interested to try long distance bike touring in the last few years.
Just saw this. Great! What tour were you contemplating?

Re: Starting a podcast on Podbean and others

Great, looking forward to hear this then! And yes, getting interviewed by the local paper is a really good idea for sure (usually doesn't pay though, while the inverse does, if that's a consideration). If you angle for that, I'd suggest taking the PR in your own hands, and approaching them yourself....

Re: Starting a podcast on Podbean and others

Sweet!! I'll tune in for sure. Some good recommendations in this thread wrt microphones/gear, but I guess you saw it already: https://forum.earlyretirementextreme.com/viewtopic.php?f=21&t=11846 I don't know much about podcasts, and even less about specific platforms, so I can't offer much in ter...

Re: Something From Nothing Log

I sold [...] the espresso machine from the fixit log for $800 plus shipping Wow, that's something. I really enjoy this thread. I love your finds, how you refurbish them, and the amounts you sell them for (when you don't keep them). Very impressive. Among the recent stuff, I particularly liked the s...

Re: Fixit Log

I was fed up at having all my pens and pencils laying around pell-mell in my "random stuff" drawer, so I made a pencil case. I used some thin-as-hell chrome tanned leather that I salvaged from a pair of (ski-?)pants found in the trash. I made a quick pattern with paper, marked it on the le...

Re: Stoa Presentation: A Systems Approach To Resilient Lifestyle Design

@Peter - Great interview. I like how you leave your interviewee speak without interrupting all the time, this is offense #1 in most youtubers/podcasters. I think it was a nice format, too, having questions at the end. And thanks for the explanation about the comments. I don't necessarily agree (see ...

Re: Resources and recommend watching

@the_platypus - Funny thing, I just read it a few weeks ago. I believe someone here suggested it but I can't recall where. Anyways, very good read. Fits nicely in the progress-is-not-all-it's-made-to-be genre. Also from the same author, on the same topic, this video ("Paradise with Side Effects...

Re: Stoa Presentation: A Systems Approach To Resilient Lifestyle Design

The white-curtain-on-the-window idea is good. If it's not too thick, it should let enough light pass through. The DIY desk-softbox idea that you suggest would also be fine for the purposes. Probably the best, most simple and most convenient setup. And yeah, the light above should probably be avoided...

Re: Stoa Presentation: A Systems Approach To Resilient Lifestyle Design

Just listened to the whole thing. Loved it. Your talk about pre-(post-)consumer systems reminded me of how hunter-gatherers, when they come into contact with wage-work, treat it simply as another form of ressource extraction, and not as a job, much like someone might when he attains the higher level...

Re: Stoa Presentation: A Systems Approach To Resilient Lifestyle Design

@Alphavile - Yes yes, sorry, didn't mean to criticize your input, apologies if I sounded like that. I'm just thinking out loud here, maybe some of my thoughts can be useful to Jacob. I'm aware of ERE principles, and I've rigged setups w/ minimal, non-photo gear. Just showing options. As you say, the...
