Re: A french newcomer into the rabbit hole

Welcome Starman. Have you considered Canada, and specifically Québec and Montréal? Québec likes French immigrants, and I believe it's somewhat easy for French people to immigrate here. It's also relatively cheap, and the typical Quebec character is somewhat at halfway between that of Americans and F...

Re: How much and which telecommunications technology to use? (Home internet, home phone, smartphone, etc)

I must agree to most points, yes. Hunter-gatherers were probably distracted by bird watching or whatever. One thing I disagree would be that people aren't on their devices all the time only because of social media/reasons. Your phone will push you all sorts of notifications that have nothing to do w...

and were trained by a generation who had their faces glued to the tv, don’t forget before them, they had the radio on all the time. the portable transistor radio was probably the devil to some. My point was not that people with the nose to their phones are distracted. My point is that their device ...

Re: How much and which telecommunications technology to use? (Home internet, home phone, smartphone, etc)

Well, I looked down on those people big time, those who have their face glued on their phone. But the truth is that those machines are built to be addictive. They are human skinner boxes, and by conditioning you ruthlessly, they do encroach on your autonomy. So I'm not sure it's always the people wh...

Re: How much and which telecommunications technology to use? (Home internet, home phone, smartphone, etc)

Well, if I'm home, I'd rather use my computer, and if you rely on it (e.g. for navigation), then you just can't be sure you'll have wifi. (Anyhow, not where I live. And it's becoming more rare given that everyone now has data - they removed it from some parks, here, that used to have free wifi.) Am ...

Re: How much and which telecommunications technology to use? (Home internet, home phone, smartphone, etc)

Of course you're correct. But you still have to pay for the data, and for me, it's to much money for something that's useless. There's not one single time in my life when I thought "Jeez, wish I had data!" I never got lost, never wish I'd need to access Facebook, etc. If I'm going to a meeting, I ju...

Re: How much and which telecommunications technology to use? (Home internet, home phone, smartphone, etc)

Oh yes, I read him a while ago. I'm aware I'm not going to change anything by myself, but I will resist nonetheless and protect my right to complain. Situation is made even worse by planned obsolescence. I do have a phone, and I can access wifi if I really needed to, but phones (devices in general) ...

Re: How much and which telecommunications technology to use? (Home internet, home phone, smartphone, etc)

I have an iPhone 4 that I bought used for 60$ in 2015. Still works as new, and keeps it charge for a week, though I have installed precisely zero app. I have no data, and I will resist until the end of time unless they give it to me for free. I would hate to have notifications bother me all the time...

Re: Is Scientific Research Worthwhile?

This thread summarizes many of the reason for which I said no to an offer to do a Ph.D. Research is worthwhile, but in many cases, it is just like many jobs: it is corrupted by everything that comes with it. My need for independence and autonomy is very high, and I didn’t see a lot of it going aroun...

Re: video editing apple computer?

Ah ok, I get it. Yeah, laptops are convenient, but god I hate the ergonomics too. I also just remembered reading this a year ago, maybe it can help you: https://petapixel.com/2019/04/08/building-a-photo-editing-computer-on-the-cheap/. I know you're looking for macs, but you might be able to find som...

Re: video editing apple computer?

I know very little, so this is just a small thought, but if you're doing part-time, light and simple work, would not any computer be able to handle this? If so, I'd just go with the most convenient, cheap computer I can find. You can always buy a used screen calibration device on Craigslist.

Re: Keep repairing old Jeep or replace?

Glad to see you found something that suits your needs. With a good maintenance, you should be able to keep it for a long while. I'm not sure about this specific model, but I still often see 1990's Corolla on the road, and those were built like tanks. Just about indestructible. Some of them have upwa...

Re: Rob is growing and foraging 100% of his food for a year

I get what you're saying: you hope that if we explain things to people well enough, people will understand. And I am not sure they will. That's kind of what I'm saying. I'm really saying that people are more likely to get it. Kegan himself recognizes that it's not easy to get people to a higher lev...

Re: Rob is growing and foraging 100% of his food for a year

Well, I guess we disagree. I think it's just as exactly as true to talk about white privilege as it is to talk about black disadvantage. They are both defined relatively to the other. It's the flip side of the same coin. It's just that one expression(white privilege) is (I believe) more likely to ma...

Re: Rob is growing and foraging 100% of his food for a year

@ Ertyu : Much of what you say is true. But your choice of words will be better or worse depending on what you are trying to achieve. As you say, if you (as a black person) want to feel like your worldview if validated, then “Privilege” is an excellent word, for all the reasons you mentioned. OTOH, ...

Re: Keep repairing old Jeep or replace?

Get the van, sell the outback! Well, that's what I'd do, for all the reasons you mentioned (versatility, cheaper to fix, hauling stuff, the Outback is falling apart, etc.). It's nice that the car is from a friend. You have an idea of how it was driven and maintained. Also I'm not sure I got what kin...

Re: Games People Play: The Psychology of Human Relationships

"Fit" can mean that. It's also a word that's used as an euphemism for "Your temperament doesn't match out culture". For instance, if you're not "fun-loving" and you want to work in a business full of extroverts, they'll have you in interview, and then they'll say you don't "fit", i.e., your temperam...

Re: Secular Cycles

I know the library's closed, but just FIY, in normal times, many libraries will gladly buy books if you ask them to. (I've successfully had my library buy many 100$+ books.) Some of them have an online form. It's also possible, sometimes, to get a book through inter-libarary loans.
