Re:

That's an interesting dilemma. Since the socio-cultural advantages of the U.S. appeal to you the most, I'll have to display my urban snobbery and say that it really depends where you'd be going. If your job is in, say, NYC, Chicago, or L.A., it would definitely be a profound opportunity for your ch...

Re: TheRedHare's Journal

That's too bad you needed to take on debt for the car purchase, but I assume you'll be saving quite a bit of money in the auto repair department. And the Fit is better on gas than your old ride. What's the commute like to the new job vs. the old job? Yea it was unfortunate, but it was time. The com...

ERE Clothes

Been hearing a lot about this brand. Plan to get a pair of their pants soon. They make really high quality clothing meant to be very functional and versatile. Stuff is expensive, but if you want to buy a few very high quality pieces that will last a very long time, look no further. https://outlier.n...

Re: What kind of bank account should I open?

I'm thinking about joining the Navy Federal Credit Union since my dad is an AirForce Veteran. I live in the city, so I'm not sure about any local credit unions. There might be one up by my parents which is about an hour drive, but if I found one I liked, I would need it to be accommodating for folks...

What kind of bank account should I open?

So I currently only have 1 local bank account that I've been using for the past several years, but the problem is that its no longer convenient to get to since the nearest one to me is now about an hour away. I'd like to open an account with a new bank that would be close by, have a decent interest ...

Re: Starting a Learning Tribe

I'm all for having local/regional ERE meetups. I think regional would be more successful since the ERE community can be rather sparse. We could do monthly meetups that last a weekend. We could mix up the skills based on the environment that the community live in too. For instance, the chapter that l...

Re: How to cut back on food spending

Basically, start thinking in "kokus"--the amount of grain required to feed a man for a year. It costs about $200 to provide a person with 2000 kcal per day for a year using staple grains and beans, which also provide your full dose of protein and fiber if you cook smart. So, basically, yo...

Re: How to cut back on food spending

For example, I live in London and buy all of my meat at Smithfield’s which is a wholesale meat market targeted at large buyers (supermarkets, butchers, etc). It’s only open from 2am-6am but they’ll sell to you as long as you buy in bulk. One trip for about £100 is enough chicken/pork/beef to last m...

Re: How to cut back on food spending

Is the 250-300 including any eating out as those tend to get expensive no matter what you do. Nope, that's just grociers. Granted, there are a few other things that are thrown into the mix, but for the most part that's the majority of my grocery expense. Eating out is a different story. I generally...

Re: How to cut back on food spending

Yea, I'd like to maybe cut back on my meat intake even though it's tough. I'm not the biggest bean fan so I've generally avoided it as much as possible. But if I found a tasty recipe that's easy to make I'd definitely switch to that. I also think it might be the Kroger I go to. It's a really fancy o...

How to cut back on food spending

Ok, so I've been reading some people's expense breakdowns, and have noticed most people spending somewhere around $100-$150 range in grocery spending. I've noticed that my grocery bill a month is around $250-$300. I'm not sure why, my bill would be so expensive as I don't buy anything crazy expensiv...

Re: Meeting eccentric people IRL

I can understand how the OP feels, and also everyone's comments on the opposite sex. Before meeting my gf I was very cynical about the opposite sex due to a bad relationship I had back in college. In hindsight I realized several reasons why I had such difficulty with women. 1. I never went out. -Obv...

Making new friends

So this may seem like a strange topic but it's one that I've been pondering on for a bit, and I've been wondering if ERE people have had similar experiences. So I've been in the labor force for about 2 years now, and I must admit, my 'friend' group hasn't really grown at all. Lucky me, I now have a ...

Re: Is a car lease a good idea?

So I ended up buying a 2004 Toyota Camery LE 4cyl for $5,400. It's super clean both in and out and the guy seemed to take very good care of it. It's got 105,000 miles on it, so still a good bit of life left in it. Hoping it lasts me! Here's a link for those interested: https://atlanta.craigslist.org...

wow, talk about stressful living. I actually feel very sorry for them, but at the same time they really seemed to do it to themselves. Re: Is a car lease a good idea?

Thanks for the feedback ya'll. I appreciate it. Everyone has made some good points, and I think I will stick with the truck for a little while longer...at least until I pay off my student loans. Then I think I might want to get something more fuel efficient, and newer. I've got my eyes on a 2013 Hon...

Is a car lease a good idea?

So I've thought about getting a car lease versus purchasing a used car in cash. Some of the obvious advantages are that you don't have to worry about maintenance for the lease car, and you can easily estimate your car expenses. I'm not interested in getting anything fancy. I'd be satisfied getting s...
