Re: 3 yrs to FI: ertyu's journal

At 42 years old and still working, I would be much more worried about looking back 20-30 years from now and realizing that I was afraid for nothing and squandered the remaining years away worrying about the minutia of WR calculations vs. figuring out what I want out of life. Valid, and an excellent...

Re: 3 yrs to FI: ertyu's journal

The good news is that each year that you still work, you can subtract 12k or 8k from the 600k or 400k, respectively - because you will be one year older :) so it will converge rather quickly. This is my personal back of the envelope theory, is that if extreme early retirement is maybe hard, less ex...

Re: 3 yrs to FI: ertyu's journal

Have you considered just slowly eating through the principal? What's the point of dying with all that money anyway? Assuming you don't want to live longer than e.g. 100 years old, your withdrawal rate could be much higher. It's really surprising for me that such an obvious idea is rarely discussed ...

This made me chuckle. Are we having a 3D surface for all the allo to ace + the entire alphabet soup of gender and sexuality orientations too? Or how are we handling that bit?

ertyu, I appreciate the feedback. Truly, I do. I think all too often parents get their kids involved in activities, with the best of intentions, only to cause more harm than good by going “try hard”. On a level, even if you're not a loser like my father, it's natural: parents are worried, this is t...

Re: 3 yrs to FI: ertyu's journal

If you call your place "trash", don't pay tax on it, and keep postponing repairs, that's three clear signs that you're not cut out to be a home owner. That happens a lot, it's quite common to get attracted to real estate for the wrong reasons! I'd learn the lesson, sell the place, and for...

I can translate the ERE book to Spanish for DW's family :D
Now this is a brilliant idea -- culminates in actual output and is an actual project one can chunk and complete + meaningful to others

Seemingly random question, but on the second paragraph I quoted...and I have no idea how far down the vipassana path you've gone, but do you think you are in dark night of the soul territory (in the Daniel Ingram, pragmatic dharma sense of the phrase)? Thanks for chiming in, Dave, excellent point. ...

On DD: Making exercise into a positive time you spend together to bond will serve her well for life. I'm what happens otherwise. Good dadding. Im sure you don't need told, but: make sure you keep the time positive - this is not where to bring up your concerns about areas you find her lacking, lectur...

I never paid attention before but I think it's neat that improvements and inspirations are under the same category. Improvement as not something that's needed because one is lacking/inferior/bad but because one is looking forward to something energizing.

@ertyu: I never thought about that approach to learning languages. My response to something like this is that I won’t work but the structure your idea gives seems like a very good idea It depends on your psychological make-up. Choosing X date on which you'd sit the exam for "lowest level"...

I'd be concerned that one would spend too much time stationary living on a train. Trains are quite space-constrained.

Congrats on the promotion! To all of the other language learning advice i'd add, if you're the sort of person who is motivated by that sort of thing, look up whether there's a spanish proficiency test one can take and aim to check off the levels. The advantages to this approach are that someone has ...

Re: Actualization!- Level 7 towards level 8

V interesting. The part that's curious to me is that wl7-8 is where jacob sees the inner work begin. To me, the inner work is the work. It's only after the inner work is done that it unspools out into "reality." And without the inner work, no action taken in reality will be persistent or ...

I still found knowing about the website itself useful. I didn;t know it existed and it's been useful over the past couple of days. I’ve been hesitating to negotiate my salary, fearing they might increase my workload, when I actually want to do less, not more. You're postulating a connection that's not there. There's no point in fearing that they will increase your workload. Negotiate salary first, deal with everything else lat...

Re: Lemur Journal!

Good article. "The hedonist deprivation of consumer culture" is my main take-away. Consumerism is conventionally touted as a way to satisfy our hedonism; when people speak of being frugal, etc., an undercurrent is often that hedonism is misguided and needs to be somehow overcome. The book ...
