Re: "War of Art"

I'm just finishing reading "War of Art", by Steven Pressfield. I'd be glad to hear what others who have read it think about it. To me, the message contained is so negative that the book is basically an argument AGAINST pursuing art, or anything ambitious for that matter. The author's stru...

Re: Life without a washing machine...

sheets are fine without a washing machine. a duvet might be too much, though. but i'm thinking, i'd much rather go to the laundromat for my duvet and my winter jacket once a year than get a washing machine.

So I miss a lot of the look-at-screen camaraderie. ;)
you can ask your friends who are poking on their phones to show you any interesting memes they find. this way, they can poke for something they think is fun, get to share it with you, and you get to feel included.

The other person not planning and always getting to see how they feel is just a shit end of the stick, imo. It's not their fault, it's your fault, you're just not giving yourself the space to be an emotional being and usually you're not giving the other person credit for what they can do. By allowi...

Re: How will you evaluate this job offer

I strongly suspect these people would end up losing their jobs anyways. It's not you who causes people to be fired. It's the corporation. If they don't replace them with you, they'll replace them with someone else. There's no room for humanity when it comes to corporate structures.

Re: Error's never ending errings

Developing the skill to deal with the "I don't wanna" is one of the crucial tasks in life. The other crucial task is, "I want to do this bullshit thing/substance very much, and I need to let go of this urge/craving." Being able to deal, inside yourself, with the suck of craving a...

Re: Just Gravy

All day and night, I am submerged in a deep pool of guilt, and any small incident concerning the children (e.g., DS2 gets a fever or DD3 seems anxious) provokes a tidal wave of guilt that completely engulfs and drowns me. I endure fantasies of crawling back to my ex, begging forgiveness, swearing e...

We never have emotion-free reasoning. In one of Oliver Sachs' books (neurologist who works with weird cases and writes about how people get when certain areas of their brain are damaged), there is a guy whose whatever-region was toast for one reason or another and so his emotions went offline. He wa...

Not an intj, so i don't know: would it help to think about how your chosen clothing and presentation style can be instrumental, or do you think that would compound the issue in that you'd rather be moving away from solely instrumental thinking as such? Also, I know what you mean by slug style is sti...

What's most important is that you are in her corner. Being able to come home to a place where she can be safe and affirmed will make a big difference. It's heartwarming to see that for every transphobic £%$£&^%7 who thinks "decisions" like that better be avoided there are also kind and...

Strength and peace to your daughter. May she come out of this process whole and happy. You being a flexible, supportive, and understanding parent helps more than you think; just ask those who aren't supported and accepted. All the best for you all.

Das Kapital is also a critique of capitalism. Despite being such a boogeyman for most Americans, "communism" and "socialism" have never actually been properly defined (which is what makes them such good boogeyman/propaganda terms, but I digress). The Soviets themselves didn't kno...

@ertyu - That's good advice. I'll give some of those things a try. This issue always trips me up because worrying about individual aesthetic/identity always feels very neoliberal/postmodern/trapped in this particular milieu. Because these things "don't really exist" and weren't luxuries m...

Imo one of the biggest misconceptions americans have is that self-employment and starting your own business is capitalism. It can be, but only if you exploit people -- where for "exploit" we take the actual definition of the term, to pay them less than the value of what they produced for y...

The clothing one is an excellent one to work on because it's a concrete thing. As in, you can make very concrete tasks around it: 1. Choose a set of shoes 2. Wear just shoes somewhere low stakes, then increase the stakes. 3. Plan a coordinated outfit in new style and similarly plan outings or grocer...

@iDave really interesting. Do you (or anyone) have thoughts or observations on how to avoid being lonely old person? Any stories of elderly with no family who still managed to be socially engaged and in a support network through to their ends? symbiosis with other elderly. i have also heard of it b...

I’ve also decided to do 1 more year of therapy and actively work on my social/relationship skills. I talked to my therapist and we came up with a plan how to move out of therapy and try to cope on my own. It feels really great. It’s not that I dislike therapy… I find it VERY useful and helpful.. bu...
