Re: The 4% Rule – A Castle in the Air

@daylen - The assumption/assertion of stationarity is what turns Trinity from a description of the past into a prediction of the future. The disagreement is between whether the future is like or no worse than the past because world wars, depression, etc. (stationarity holds) or it is because declin...

Re: Finding One's Edge

A Redditor a few years ago turned a $100k investment to over $3m by just focusing on one stock - AMD. Studied everything about the business, its competitors, and its price movements. Bet big when it went under what they thought was the intrinsic value and even sold calls / purchased puts when the s...

Re: Do you dream about money?

not really. i can't even get myself to daydream about money properly, such as in the what would you do / not do if you had X money types of exercises. i guess it's too ingrained in me that there is no money and there will not be money so what-ifs are immaterial (grew up during "tough times")

Re: Blackrock calling for the end of the Great Moderation Era

Good luck, in the sense of a smaller variance of the shocks hitting the global economy, is widely believed to have played an important role as well. in essence, this is the debate of, how much power do central banks have to influence the economy. is it that CBs started using interest rates as a pol...

Re: Who else earns in a currency other than dollars

Wouldn't the exchange rate matter only if you planned to move to a country that uses USD (Panama, Ecuador, ZImbabwe) or you already have a majority of your assets in USD-denominated things? I'd be very interested in a discussion of this but my immediate answer is that it would matter because if, sa...

Re: Social Contagion

We evolved to have an instinct for social contagion for a reason. The question is differentiating between the cases contagion is adaptive and the cases it's not. If there was indeed a shooting/robbery, running away as soon as you receive the perceptual "signal" would have been perfectly ad...

GBP collapsing, Yen collapsing, all non-usd currencies getting pummelled.
Fed powering forward while we are clearly in a recession already (just look at container rates for one example)
except the rand, apparently, my south african colleagues were doing a cheer earlier haha

Who else earns in a currency other than dollars

And how does the current move in the exchange rates impact whether it makes sense for you to keep working?

The moves have been sharp lately and it's making me wonder what exchange rate I'll need to see before it'll make sense for me to quit.

Re: ERE Motivation:

I'm not sure how I originally landed onto reading FIRE blogs. I was depressed and burnt out, but on my own devices I never questioned the idea of working until retirement age -- I took it as a fact of life, "just what you do." I didn't know anyone who retried early, and to me retirement me...

worldwide health insurance ex-US is actually cheaper. research your options, it's unlikely to be a problem. I have that through my expat job. Can't make any recommendations to you, though, bc obviously different options would be available to you

Re: The 4% Rule – A Castle in the Air

It seems to me that because most people are total return investors, CEOs manage towards that. The phrase "stewards of the stock price" has been floating around a ton lately - or at least it seems so to me. So, if most investors are total return investors, CEOs might be more likely to "...

rubber probably not, but you can absolutely sew your own gloves from leather of the desired quality. You'll also have leftovers for knick-knacks like sclass' swiss knife holders and the like.

@xmj can't even justify why anyone would want to do this.
I think "because they want to" is enough of a reason. Not everyone has to measure their decisions by your metrics. You're applying your decision criteria to other people, and other people might optimize for different things.

I'm also curious, it popped up as a recommendation of a Scottish city where you can live car-free :) I was considering settling there before brexit, might still if Scotland secedes and rejoins
