Re: Should I sign a two year contract with my current employer?

@Brute I’m not sure if I could be making that much more than 75k if I took another job now. However, in a year I think I would have enough experience to find something around 90k. Actually, if I moved to the Bay Area I think I could find a much higher paying job now. But, with housing costs I don’t ...

Re: Should I sign a two year contract with my current employer?

Thanks, you are correct that it’s a sellers market. I plan on taking the contract to a lawyer when I get it to make sure I understand it.

Should I sign a two year contract with my current employer?

Hello, I’m currently employed at a small software company as a “product analyst”, I’m making 65k, and this is my first job out of college. My boss recently approached me (6 months into the job) with an offer to be promoted to a “senior product analyst” with a salary of 75k. The only catch is that he...

Re: Fox's Journey: Out of the Burrow

You could probably already be FI if you invested in real estate, the leverage is insane.

You could also do a petroleum engineering masters with your geology background and start at 100k+

Re: Fox's Journey: Out of the Burrow

I love Aaron Clarey. Some of his stuff can be a little too right wing for me, but he is spot on about setting yourself up to be financially independent.

Get a math/science text book and do some problems on a regular basis if you want to improve your analytical skills.

@thedino I know you’re speaking in general terms. But regarding monogamy, I would say that it is a new untested form of relationships. There is a book called “sex at dawn” that presents evidence that the human species has mostly lived in non monogamous conditions (hunter gatherer societies) and that...

Re: Guns in America

There is a book I read once which argues that the high mass shooting rate in America is related to the car dependent structure of American cities that encourages isolation. The book went on to argue that this isolation reduces empathy and increases mental illness. In contrast, European cities are bu...

Re: Jordan Peterson

@thedino Wouldn’t the monogamy as a rule thing fall into the same category as other biblical “rules” such as those about food? That is, monogamy probably helped stopped the spread of disease before the invention of condoms and std testing but isn’t relevant in the modern context. Similarity, food ru...

The paper honestly did change my feelings about the peace corps.

I agree with everything you wrote about finding a place to live btw.

Re: Fox's Journey: Out of the Burrow

That paper I linked to was written by a left winger. It’s about how the whole thing is really just part of the American imperialist agenda.

Maybe virtue signaling was the wrong word. It’s more like “misguided attempt at altruism”

IMO the peace corps is a classic example of virtue signaling: https://bir.brandeis.edu/bitstream/hand ... sequence=1

Could you explain it more?

I don’t really understand your thesis. To me, the point of having money is to free myself from a job so I can spend time doing things I care about.

Re: Expensive dinners and drinks with friends

I would consider if the networking explanation is really just a way you’re rationalizing your behavior. I don’t have much work experience, but everyone I’m aware of at my current company got the job through applying on a job board. This includes me. My parents also got both of their current jobs thr...

Re: Anti-Index Fund Literature

It not really anti index fund, but if you search “real estate vs index funds radical personal finance”, there is a really good podcast discussion comparing the two.

Personally, I’m pursuing a real estate strategy because it has clear advantages over index funds for my specific situation.

I have a very different world view in that case.

Also I think it depends on how you define the word work? (As mentioned in the other thread I believe)

Re: Thoughts about respectability

The way I see it is that you are only forced to care about these things as long as your employed. After you’re financially independent who cares about what other people think? A strategy I use at work to deal with this is to simply keep my distance from other people. I’m polite but I don’t share ver...

Re: Tiny House/Small House Resources

What I don’t like about the tiny house thing is that it’s mostly middle class/upper class white people who pretend that what they are doing is different than living in a trailer park. Why not just buy a trailer instead of building something like this? I haven’t looked but I would guess there are a l...

Re: Jordan Peterson

Jung never intended his personality types to be used the way people on this forum do. He just saw them as descriptions, ones that change over the course of a persons life and even day to day on some cases. He didn’t want people to take them as “I’m intp so I should do x” or “intp so I show work at y...
