Re: Internationalist

Your soot problem may not be the gas quality. Try adjusting the air intake valve until you have only a blue flame, no yellow/orange. I did read of someone who couldn't solve the issue by adjusting the air intake, so she put a flat pan (pizza pan or such) on the burner and the cooking pan on top of t...

Re: Five Years, Lord Willing

Absolutely hilarious (and sadly accurate) description of the mortgage environment in 2006. I've been wondering if that attitude is creeping back, because I see banks advertising zero-down mortgages. As Calvin says: "Careful! We don't want to learn anything from this." http://www.gocomics.com/calvina...

Re: Halfmoon's journal

Wow...so impressive! Keep it coming, but taking care of your husband has priority of course. We'll be here waiting for you. McTrex, what a sweet message. :) I fully intend to keep the story going, though as you say there are other things to attend to meanwhile. Man what a violation. I know, right? ...

Re: Halfmoon's journal

DutchGirl, you and saving-10-years have been such an inspiration to me with your positive take on life and your reminders of how lucky DH and I were to get together and lead an adventurous life. A friend of ours just said it was divine intervention that 'two such wonderful oddballs found each other'...

ffj, this stole my breath. WOW.

Jason, apparently the alien anal probing shouldn't be your only concern. They also might make you slow dance.

Well, FINALLY, ffj! You asked for that story way back at the beginning, and I started thinking of writing it when I saw your treehouse project. The tower is still standing and holding the solar panels that power the house. One of my life fantasies was to spend the summer in a fire lookout tower. I n...

Re: First paycheck - You won't BELIEVE the taxes! Tax optimization?

My only advice is to get into the habit now of maintaining all your records as you go. I keep a separate tax file where I copy things I might need and make notations so I remember why I kept them. I'd also suggest keeping medical and dental records/receipts. Since you have an HSA, Olaz, this is par...

When you wind it up, be sure to bind it up. Classic. Okay; I give up! I've pondered this and googled it, but I just come up with advice on fixing a Yo-Yo. :? Is that a dog in the blurry photo? Nothing like a dog to take your mind off of things. Very true. That is Joey the Rottweiler, a wonderful do...

DutchGirl, thank you! This journal is partly your fault because you encouraged me back when I first joined the forum. :)

Also: I edited the shop-building post to include a photo I'd forgotten to upload of the Inspector General (me), also known as Mrs. Badass.

Re: A Journey of Mindfulness--the Remaking of Life in Midstream.

I did something stupid over the weekend. My 17-year-old lawnmower went belly-up on me Saturday and I bought a new one. Then after considering it and talking to a knowledgeable friend I now think I can repair it. So I might have spent $400 (I like good mowers) that I didn't have to. This made me lau...

Re: First paycheck - You won't BELIEVE the taxes!

The second page of your W-4 is a guideline. You can claim more or fewer exemptions as you choose. Any excess after annual filing will be refunded without interest, and a shortage must be paid with possible penalty for underpayment. See how that works? ;) The bar is high for claiming a tax deduction ...

+1 awesome. An important thing to consider with Lasik - how long will it last?
I've wondered that also. Eyes are so critical that it seems worthwhile to wait as long as possible for the technology to be perfected.

I sent you a PM. He's in Eastern BC, though. We started going to him when we lived in E WA, and we were so impressed that we continued to make the 6-hour trip from Seattle after we moved! Finally we had to give that up and find a new dentist here.

Re: How do you get low cost dental care?

Since you live (I think) in the Puget Sound area, you could look into the University of Washington dental school. As I recall, the cost is about half that of a private dentist. Pre-trained students perform the procedures under the eyes of faculty. It's kind of inconvenient because you don't have muc...

That's good to know about synthetics, Felipe. We're still waiting for more information on this latest recurrence so we can look clearly at the options. Even if there's no hope of a cure, I'd like him to try cannabis for his constant pain and nausea.
