Re: Wall Street Journal FIRE article

I think "frugal" woods is just mis-titled. It should be the "rich persons guide to rural homesteading".

Anyone know what type of job at a non-profit gig pays $270k a year and you can work from home? Would be good info for college age ERE-ers looking for career possibilities.

Re: Wall Street Journal FIRE article

To me Jacob you are the best, least commercialized, most cerebral, and most authentic guy writing about this stuff. You would have been the first person I quoted if I was the journalist. And your book is true "ERE" (emphasis on "extreme") not just normal frugality. Vicki Robin is the real deal too. ...

Wall Street Journal FIRE article

https://www.wsj.com/articles/the-new-retirement-plan-save-almost-everything-spend-virtually-nothing-1541217688?mod=hp_lead_pos6 Not sure anyone has posted about this article. This has been front page on WSJ.com for a few days. I was so disappointed they didn't interview Jacob! The article was more a...

Elwood: There are 106 miles to Chicago, we have a full tank of gas, half a pack of cigarettes, it's dark and we're wearing sunglasses.

I definitely like this forum way more than MMM. I like that it attracts people that are more out on the fringes. Thanks Jacob for not selling out!

Re: Preppers?

The great thing about moving towards a homesteading or even homesteading "lite"/urban homestead/off the grid type of life is at the same time you pursue that lifestyle, are at the same time also adding a lot of prepping skills & self sufficiency. Not from prepping, but just from how you live everyda...

Re: C40's Journal

Augustus...very interesting points. These are some of the first times in human history large numbers of people are not having kids at all, especially in wealthy developed nations. Kind of worries me. I'm in my later 40's and didn't have kids. Many of my friends didn't either. I was always afraid kid...

Re: C40's Journal

Great postin' there C40! Lucky mom to have a talented son. RE is really hot all over the western USA right now and prices high in the good cities. Be interesting what you turn up. KS, OK as you mentioned... and many other midwest states I'm sure are radically cheaper and easier to buy then the west....

Re: Jacob's other journal

Thanks so much Jacob for taking the time to update, I get a lot out of your experiences. I agree with DIY major house projects...its the amount of time it will take for one to learn from scratch (vs. other higher value things you could be doing). Especially if you are like me and not too handy. Also...

Re: Full time RV-ing as a snowbird?

One thing to consider is that as a young single guy full time RVing is going to put a huge dent in your social life. I alternate between a house in utah in the summer and a sailboat in mexico in the winter, and it's basically impossible to find a woman interested in dating someone with this kind of...

Re: C40's Journal

And I'd have a place to get some of the social interaction and involvement that I've been noticing I need more of. The funny thing is with all the popular life hacking, 4 hr WW stuff, working from your laptop in Thailand, drifting in vans, etc... we strive for in these modern times, I think what re...

I have to say I really like what you are doing with your life cmonkey. Homsteading, being married, planning to have kids, having roots in a community, etc... It's refreshing vs. everyone these days who want to be a Peter Pan and never grow up, live in a van, travel the world, jump around from place ...

Re: Teardrop Trailer?

@allagash We did consider buying a small SUV first or a retired builders van to remodel (a la C40), but we only operate one vehicle and using an SUV for all purposes would mean that our transport costs went up for the whole of the year every year. A van big enough to camp in would cost more to run ...

Re: Teardrop Trailer?

I looked at a bunch of teardrops and thought they felt very small. Truck campers felt more roomy. But you need a truck for a truck camper and you need to store it. As others said, pulling a tear drop just for a place to sleep off the ground doesn't make much sense from a ERE perspective. Why not buy...

Did you get rich?
I never quite hit the stock options jackpot I chased in the 90's. Made a great salary in my 20's but blew it all on wine, women, and song.

Re: I'm starting to hate my 9-5?

Some random thoughts: -I worked at start ups in Silicon Valley in the 90's and mostly hated my jobs and had to drink a pot of coffee since the work was really tough and demanding -I did it to get rich but never really liked technology that much - most of it was BS politics and working with bi-polar ...

Re: Jacob's other journal

Speaking of focus, I'm beginning to change my mind on home-ownership because all the maintenance takes away from what I consider more interesting projects. Major home renovations are a lot of work. I'm not the greatest mechanically inclined guy, I'm not very patient, I'm not very interested in spen...

Re: How do you get low cost dental care?

Never got your PM, so I just PM'd you. Good thing is my tooth issues are not a urgent burning fire. First thing I might do is get another local dentist to look at my teeth to get a second opinion. Also, this current dentist is in a nice area in a class A office building so my guess is their prices r...
