Re: JollyScot's Journey Starts
I quickly skimmed the regs last night, as far as I could see they don’t mandate extraction from close to the hob, just that if the extraction is not adjacent to the hob it needs to extract 60l/m. So One of these fugly things https://www.screwfix.com/p/manrose-wf150ap-automatic-axial-pullcord-kitchen...

Window mounted extractor fan for building regs, then take insurance against listed buildings approval ?
My first house was a listed wreck, had a few niggles like this that came out of the woodwork on sale. Wouldn’t do again, despite tripling value.

Hi Hazel, Thats a pretty turbulent first half. I'm glad you've found some peace and stability. I don't think your figures are deluded, try working your numbers through this guide compiled from real life spending as a sanity check. https://www.which.co.uk/money/pensions-and-retirement/starting-to-pla...

Re: Escaping the shackles (UK)
Well given that I was fixer-uppering 20 years ago I might have a rose-tinted view but it was actually not that hard, just time consuming. I did get help in for stuff I didn't want to risk like gas work, plumbing (pre-pex) and plastering. Everything else was a case of looking it up , planning and jus...

Re: Escaping the shackles (UK)
Hey Matt, good to see another poster from the Uk. That's a pretty impressive start, with lots of big changes in the pipeline. So the caveat on my comments is that I'm twice your age and have 2 teenage children, almost inevitably I'm more risk averse or than you and the reason for that risk aversion ...

Congrats, habit and prudence can do one, I'm sure the digital satanic mills will continue to grind on without you. Be sure to swipe some post-its on the way out.

Re: L's Journal
Yep podcasts are a bit of a low information density nightmare, but needs must... I've tended to view a lot of ER type writing as people rattling the bars of their gilded cages, un-jobbing seemed to be a much more reasonable "why build a cage?" approach. I think you are in a pretty unique s...

Re: L's Journal
Have you come across the "unjobbing" concept ? It sounds like you have some ideas in common. As I recall it's not so much about retiring early so much as recognising and accepting the trade offs involved in working at what you find fulfilling rather than maximising your income, Michael Fog...

Re: Kipling's Journal
I came across this vineyard unexpectedly while out on a hike a couple of months ago. https://www.redhillestate.com/ Really beautiful to look at and owner seemed to be having a pretty good time of it (he was labelling up bottles), but the risk / reward of running a vineyard in the Uk boggles the mind...

Hey BookLover, welcome.
Maths tuition sounds like its got legs, if you don't fancy the salaryman experience and the book writing is a bit 'slow'. Are you charging the going rate? Have you considered leafleting a small 'posh' area ?

We will be driving him every morning and collecting every evening...so looking forward to it ...NOT...the joys of parenthood. Yep, had to do the taxi drive of shame for 6 months with DD last year, as she kept getting 'distracted' on the way to college. However, the biggest change in her outlook cam...

My DS crashed out of college only after 1 semester...never went to any lecture, partied all the time and failed all first term exams. Missed this bit of the update, but... DS probably isn't feeling the love but it's good that this happened so quickly. Nephew did this all 1st year at one place befor...

Re: Kipling's Journal
Hello Kipling, I'm glad to see you've started a journal. Having spent a fair bit of time ruminating on past 'inefficiencies' myself e.g. paying off mortgages, not taking out pensions, futzing about with asset allocations and so on, I concluded that although people spend an awful lot of time blogging...
