Re: Inflation, Interest Rates & Financial Represion

Extremely large US companies, top 100, are global, statistically these investments are preferred for diversification compared to the general market as opposed to direct international investing. I have never really understood this argument. Korea is probably the biggest “exporter” in the g20, as alm...

Re: Choosing between job options

At your level of savings, to me this would be a one-second decision. Ok i am probably stuck in a salaryman perspective but $250k. $250k Unless you start throwing money around you can almost double your NW in two years, creating a massive margin of safety in a very short time. The $145k job seems lik...

@MI when you buy physical gold and silver you mean actual bars or do you use something like the sprott trusts that buy gold bars?

Re: Transfer from Betterment to Vanguard

@Old Man offering ETFs in different places doesn’t mean they aren’t heavily US centric. Vanguard doesn’t offer any brokerage services in most of Europe and in Asia. Don’t know about the UK (I believe they have a decent presence there), but in the rest or Europe they are way behind blackrock and lyxo...

Re: Transfer from Betterment to Vanguard

I’ve already recommended this, but as a serial expat that has needed to move investments across the globe multiple times, HSBC is the ONLY institution I have found to more or less be capable of doing the job. Vanguard is very USA centric and will not want you as a customer once you move out. Also, b...

Re: Investments Trade Log

Thanks. @MI I see you’re the usual optimist  (I’m joking I really appreciate your takes). With cryptos, it’s fascinating to see the level of correlation between tether’s printing (it’s very blatant now that they aren’t backed almost at all - they are under investigation from the DOJ and somehow...

Re: the animal's journal

Thanks for the update. Some side thought: You write well, your pictures are cool and the awesome nature does the rest. I really think you could build a lucrative side business by chaperoning urban people around. I know for sure one day I will get in touch with you and offer you money to tag along on...

Re: Investments Trade Log

I have bought a few Tencent shares on the way down, with an avg price of 451hkd per share. Big jump today. You rarely get companies with almost no net debt, huge margins and growth rates so high that 20% YoY is "somewhat disappointing" at these valuations. Sure there's a fairly big country...

Re: Any math teachers here?

@Seppia, in the UK there are also about 20 class hours, but apparently there is lots of admin work. Read an article also that UK teachers are fleeing to international schools abroad, not least to Italy, enjoying higher working standards and well better weather. For what I’ve seen, the UK is one of ...

Re: Any math teachers here?

In Italy it’s borderline impossible to be overworked as a teacher, as they have under 20 class hours per week.
The problem is they make shit money, but it would not be a problem for an ERE person.

Re: Frugal chicos journal - ERE in The Basque Country

Good for cutting back drinking, I just did a 12 day “dry run” and felt great. The point (at least for me) is not to completely stop drinking but keep it occasional, like once a week. You seem to have a clear direction, that plus a good routine (kids help with that I noticed!) makes for a healthy lif...

Re: Semi-ERE Year 3 - Wanderlust Prevails

In general, great to see you’re as enthusiastic and energetic as always! I’ve also decided to cut back on alcohol a little while ago, and am taking advantage of my vacations to stay completely off it. Currently in my 10th day alcohol free, feels great. I’ll be visiting my friend in Sweden in 10 days...

Re: Dead White Man's Clothes: The Environmental Disaster Fuelled by Used Clothes

I don’t know why, but I have a mental block with getting clothes second hand unless it’s from family (I still have a magnificent wool sweater from when my dad was 27, a couple cachemire gilets from my grandpa etc, back from the time when most clothes were made to last). The best I can do is I never ...

Re: IPCC report

I found it less catastrophic then I would have expected, but I did not read all 42 pages in detail. Personally, my faith in humanity isn’t exactly sky high, when I see people buying 2 ton teslas in HK “because environment” when HK has The most efficient and cheap public transport system I’ve ever se...

IPCC report

A new document from the IPCC is out. https://www.ipcc.ch/report/sixth-assessment-report-working-group-i/ I have read the Summary For Policymakers (which I assume is a dumbed down version), and found it interesting. Also, wanted to check here if there's someone more skilled than me who can/wants to c...

I already earn way more than I need by working one job, if I ever managed to reduce working hours I’d just enjoy the extra free time rather than find creative ways to get back to a 9-7 routine

Re: Tang Ping

In South Korea, Saturday was a normal work day until a few years ago. The average Korean I know gets out if the house around 630-7am and never gets back before 830pm. Basically, South Korea is the real version of the west’s stereotype of Japan. In Japan, people spend long hours at work (or I should ...

Re: Semi-ERE Year 3 - Wanderlust Prevails

Great discussion plus a bonus cameo! I don’t have much to add to what’s already been said, other than: don’t overthink things, you went back to work because it made sense, if you feel like hanging in for a few extra bucks there’s nothing wrong with it in my opinion. Similar to investing, I think the...
