Re: Cooking beans

@ bankai I see your point and I agree mostly. Still, this is not exactly negligible, and most people don't know about the part highlighted in bold. Nutrition-wise, cooked and canned are about the same, but the sodium content of canned beans can be 100 times that of cooked. [/b] I have never seen the...

Re: The Happiest Guy In The World

@jacob: I inferred from the video, where he says it like three times, and mostly from the way he says it.
Of course we "don't really know", it was a deduction.
I didn't think I was carrying a pitchfork, just made an innocent observation.

Re: Cooking beans

Funny how quality never enters the conversation as a variable Canned beans taste like shit (citation needed), while if one buys the good stuff dry (or, even better, fresh) then cook them the proper way*, he/she will end up with a vastly superior quality level, in terms of both taste and healthiness....

Re: A Journey of Mindfulness--the Remaking of Life in Midstream.

What a great post thanks Dave. My two cents: you seem like a resourceful, smart guy. It may take some time to adjust to a different "life" but you will figure it out once you're there. One of the most distinctive traits of humans is our adaptability. We adjust to about everything. You'll be an educa...

Re: The Happiest Guy In The World

My only thought after watching the video is that I don't really know how the happiest guy in the world looks, but I bet he is not spending his time telling everybody how happy he is.
He looks like someone who's trying to convince others he's doing ok when in fact he's not.

Re: Seppia's journal

@wanderingscholar It’s more or less what DW and I did. We built our careers in France then NYC, made most of our money in the USA, and got back here in Italy. In Italy, outside of the cities of Rome and Milan, one can live a comfortable life with $1500 per month. Buy yourself a place and with $1500 ...

Re: Psychology of Money

To me, more than fear, it’s the golden handcuffs that get me. I’ve been wired to delay gratification and be very prudent with money since a very young age (thanks mostly to my parents and a bit to the way I am). So what have always been strengths/advantages now are a major factor in holding me back ...

Re: Seppia's journal

@ffj: this is how apartments are usually sold in Italy. Kitchen and lights are on you. DW is along care of it while I’m out having fun in Japan for work :) @cl: thanks! The only things that have to be paid are property taxes (very low in Italy on the 1st apartment you own, I should be paying around ...

Re: Deferred Compensation Question

What if inflation picks up? Will the DCP still be earning 3% or will it adjust automatically?

Just another point to consider maybe.

Personally it seems too little of a reward for me to take the risks.

Re: Seppia's journal

Being a homeowner Last Friday we finally completed the purchase of our apartment. Since both DW and I have been pretty much always on the move, and we are about to leave again (first to eastern Italy in Trieste, then probably in a year or so to Asia), the idea was to purchase a small, low maintenanc...

Re: Preparing for the next recession

"we're headed for a recession" is always true. Best to be prepared for one at all times because it's been my experience that they rarely announce themselves publicly ahead of time (though are often obvious with 20/20 hindsight). Fortunately the road to ER and the reliance on accumulating assets whi...

Re: Ad Astra per Aspera [Journal]

I like Cincinnati, a lot of that area is very European (especially right across the river in Kentucky). Funny you say that, my experience has been the opposite. The only two good things I can say about Cincinnati are: 1- it's very close to the bourbon trail. 2- I met Kerry King in a bar there (I ma...

I was already fantasizing about a lavish ERE meetup where people only drank french champagne and ate dry aged prime tenderloins.

Sad I'm missing this

Re: Ideas needed: How to repopulate village in Northern Norway

I hear this often - Northern Norway has long and dark winters, is incredibly cold and so forth. It's not really that bad at all, and it's not like the nature that is spectacular in summer suddenly turns ugly in winter. I'm sorry but it seems like in January 1st Tromso one gets around 5 hours of non...

Re: 2Birds1Stones' 12 month hustle to freedom!

It's a great plan. Life may get in the way somehow (a kid, a great career bump, a newfound love for an expensive hobby such as flying etc) but that's part of the fun. My approach is to have a long term general vision about what I want to do with myself and my family, and then try and be flexible abo...

Re: 2Birds1Stones' 12 month hustle to freedom!

Progress and savings are impressive. What is your plan for the first mini retirement stint? Did it stay the same since you first planned it or did it evolve? I'm curious because my recent track record is similar to yours, and while the general end goal has stayed the same, tactics have evolved quick...

Re: Ideas needed: How to repopulate village in Northern Norway

@Dave
All Europeans are free to move there, that's a fairly large pool of talent to work with.
It's larger than the number of people who can move freely across the USA for example.

Re: C40's Journal

what about Salt Lake City? Utah is the most beautiful state of all in my opinion, such a diverse array of amazing nature. Mountain, forest, canyons, desert... I could spend ages in Utah. Also, I've found the fears of... uh... higher than usual focus on religion... to be overblown. Lots of regular pe...

KLR is for sure better as an off-road bike, the Vstorm is an all rounder made mostly for paved roads.
