Re: Would 20M Radically Increase Your Happiness?

Interesting that you say stealth, because the more we spend, the higher the attention it draws, particularly during an economic downturn. So it becomes hard to hide. By good, it sounds like you'd donate most of it to save puppies and orphans, this could be a beautiful thing that would bring happine...

Re: Vasectomy? Child-free life?

What are you trying to accomplish with a legacy? What are the underlying reasons for the desire to leave a legacy? If I had to roughly describe my "life mission" it would be something like "leave everything a tiny bit better than it was when I joined". So this is my purpose with...

Re: Would 20M Radically Increase Your Happiness?

I would say that owning $20M of stealth money would certainly make me happy because I could do a lot of good with 90% of it and still have more than enough to be in runaway mode.

IIRC though the OP was investing his/her money mostly in failed Ponzi schemes.
So is the $20M a realistic option?

Re: Vasectomy? Child-free life?

I find this thread disturbing and depressing on so many levels I don’t know where to start  I thought that because of my general pessimism and distrust in average humans + my passion for extreme heavy metal music I would qualify among the top 666% most nihilist / anti human on the forum but my ...

Re: Investing in Self Storage spaces?

Too many people are talking about it - so I’d stay away.
It was probably a great investment idea 5 years ago.
Plus, I would not be surprised if real estate value plummeted pretty much everywhere on planet earth in the near future.

Re: Philippines or Thailand or S. U.S. border

Yes the bar for men is lower in Asia (sometimes as stated above "he doesn't beat me so that's a win" low).
Which is why I understand so many westerners are drawn towards Asian women - plus they can be absolutely beautiful which doesn't hurt.

Out of interest what's the first ? : )
You're asking an Italian, so there is no alternative to Rome :)

Re: Philippines or Thailand or S. U.S. border

Turkey as a destination to consider. I have considered Istanbul to be the second most beautiful city in the world for many years, and made it a must to visit at least once per year from 2002 to 2015. Where Rome and in part Athens (too run down) represent the heritage of the west, Istanbul was where...

Re: Philippines or Thailand or S. U.S. border

I'm more than a little bit dissatisfied with what is going on in this country. I've looked into dating, and you likely see this if your a guy. Men are not valued by women in Western cultures anymore, and then all the social fears people have for each other. *cut* I've recently dated a Philippina wo...

Re: Spend dividends or reinvest?

The approach supports the "assets as income"-paradigm, which is also how I tend to think about it Same here. I see dividends as just another form of money flowing my way. But at times it may be the smart thing to do: in Italy some brokers will reinvest the full gross amount of the dividen...

I am delighted by the performance of Tesla and ARKK.
Plus as written here multiple times, I’ve been overweight energy and other “real” stuff for a couple years, so it’s been a great 2022 (especially in relative performance) for me

Re: How can I intelligently hedge my currency risk?

The issue with the OP doesn’t seem “edging” but rather a disconnect between his/her risk tolerance and the assets held. If a 5% move in euro usd from some of the all time highs results in sleepless nights you should not be holding anything but the local currency. Op could consider: 1/ looking at the...

Re: How to read the news

"It’s our duty to filter for information. " I agree. However, it takes a lot of life energy to filter and I'm suggesting that energy could be applied elsewhere in much more beneficial ways, but I'm jaded so accept what I have to say with that in mind. I'm just not so sure the effort is wo...

Re: How to read the news

mmh I am thinking you may be responding for the sake of arguing instead of out of a genuine interest for conversation. If I say "for a young human being, getting a master's degree in economics is more useful than being 0.5 seconds faster on the 40yard dash" you can respond "what if th...

Re: How to read the news

One part of FIRE subculture I never understood is the “low information diet” mantra. There is zero upside in being more ignorant about what happens around us. Of course you want to know what is relevant: knowing whoever is banging Kim Kardashian lately isn’t exactly life changing information. Simila...

Re: I Was Once Found But Now I Am Lost

Let me elaborate: in your situation, it seems like you possibly “over accumulated” the $$$ capital and probably did not pay enough attention to other forms of capital. Depleting the $$$ part will not be catastrophic. Even assuming you’ve bought the place, a move somewhere else more suited to you sho...

Re: I Was Once Found But Now I Am Lost

If you realized that you made a mistake in picking your new location, and assuming you don’t see a way to integrate with the environment, it’s a very easy fix with the money you got.

I know this is very un-ERE but sometimes throwing money at the problem isn’t a stupid option.

Wow Valley Of the Gods is great, you'll love it. If you can, think about crossing Lake Powell at Halls Crossing instead of the "normal" way. There's like 4 ferries per day, and usually nobody waiting with you. I still remember the feeling of freedom I experienced when I arrived to the dese...
