Re: Fox's Journey: And Onto the Sunlight!

One of the only times I found my student cared about my classes was when I was teaching adults/college students English in the US. I think this was because first, they couldn't speak their native tongues together since they were from all over the world, and second, they had a real reason to want to ...

Re: An American Millennial

I'll have to see if there's a bus alternative. The Brown line is slow, too many stops, but otherwise it picks up a couple blocks from my apartment and drops off @ my work building. Pretty happy with the public transportation so far. I'm getting 1 month passes, but with working from home always on th...

Re: Fox's Journey: And Onto the Sunlight!

Teaching is a whole lot of work, a lot of which is not appreciated by anyone. Throw in disinterested or troublesome or unprepared students and parents that run the gamut from absent to hovering to full of blame, and it is a tough profession. All for not much money. Time off is above average if you ...

Re: An American Millennial

The security people at my company do the pen testing stuff, ethical hacking so to speak. Which is why it sounds kind of interesting at least. But I have heard that their job here is harder to find in the security realm. A couple of them did more what you're describing before joining our company. I a...

Re: An American Millennial

The cyber security arm of the business get compensated more, I believe. I have the opportunity to take their course for free as well, so I could transition into cyber security with this company or another. Overall, with the very modern view on remote work, casual dress, growing company, and opportun...

Re: An American Millennial

Thanks RFS. I'm feeling pretty good, like I said it was just that 1 hard day. And it was moreso my senior's attitude than any of the actual challenges of the job. Outside of work real happy, and much better than my last full-time job, which was a call center and I felt like quitting every single day...

Re: An American Millennial

Good advice, I definitely used my personal phone. Ultimately, changing companies would be worst case scenario. I'm getting exposed to an entire new language, as well as 5+ new frameworks and dozens of dependencies. My CTO said 3 months is the hope to get me up to speed. Nobody really puts pressure o...

Re: An American Millennial

Found an amazing football league here. 4 or 5 seasons/year, back-to-back. Outdoors turf. In the winter they put a dome over everything. 5v5, 8v8, and 11v11 leagues, rec, intermediate, advanced, one super league or something I think, and men's or co-ed. Multiple leagues in each division. And you can ...

Re: Obtaining a Second Passport

Which ones have you looked at? UK, Switzerland, Denmark, Norway*, Sweden, Iceland, Finland, Italy, France do seem to be OK with it. Oh, wow, that's good news. I had only looked at Spain once before, since we were interested in traveling and living there as expats. Then I only recently checked out E...

Re: Obtaining a Second Passport

What's the best/easiest/fastest country for an American to get (preferably) dual citizenship with an emphasis on healthcare and safety? Canada is all I have considered so far. European countries are appealing as well, but the ones I've looked at require forfeiting previous citizenship.

Re: An American Millennial

@unemployable I missed part of your post before. The job is downtown, and my new place is in Lakeview. <30min commute from my doorstep to my office. The 'L' drops me off in the building actually. As well, remote is fine, but for now, and the weather being fine, I prefer going to the office. Getting ...

Re: An American Millennial

Thank you wolf, theanimal, and slowtraveler. Living in a 1 bedroom in the heart of the city. I like it so far. Good news as well is my girlfriend and cats will be joining me Sep 30 or even earlier depending on what the school decides to do about replacing her. She is studying JS as well now. New pot...

Re: SlowTraveler's Journal

Awesome awesome awesome. If you can get to Moon rock or moon mountain, I can't remember exact name, but it's real popular (but not crowded)...it's a long set of stairs up (like all mountain hikes in China, but the top is a real unique rock formation). The secret, though, is there's an easy to miss t...

Re: An American Millennial

Love my new job. And got an apartment that I love the area around and checks all my boxes for housing. Thank god, got the move in early in the morning, just in time because I have to move out the hostel in the morning too! Perfect timing. Net worth down like $2k USD from June. Gonna dip more with fi...

Re: SlowTraveler's Journal

Haha stay away from China if you want to avoid the bureaucracy. Traveling through China? Check out Yangshuo, that's my only rec. Loved it there. Rent a moped, hit up all the little villages within a short ride up and down the river.

Re: An American Millennial

In Chicago now, staying in a hostel. Pretty expensive as far as hostels go, and there wasn't much to choose from AirBNB/hostel wise going into this weekend, and I made my reservation last week. Realized yesterday this weekend is Lollapalooza, so that probably has something to do with it. Checking ou...

Re: An American Millennial

That's really interesting, I didn't know that, but it does make sense. If that's the case, I might want to live in a roomshare just starting out. But move in to an apartment sooner rather than later... I could get an apartment by myself of course. I could afford it at least. But my financial goals m...

Re: An American Millennial

Thanks Scott! I think you're right about the self-direction potentially paying off as time goes on. Since I have 3 new frameworks/languages to learn before next week especially! Yep, going pretty well @cheepnis. I had zero expectation that I would land a job in under a month of getting back. Seeing ...

Re: An American Millennial

This morning I got a job offer for Chicago. I will start next Wednesday. This is pretty exciting and still a little surreal right now. It's hard to imagine that next week I'll be coding in a professional environment as a salaried employee. It does mean the next several days are going to be really bu...
