Re: PSA: China hiring teachers like whoa

Sure, I saw that same stuff, and have had it confirmed by others. Chinese can be very xenophobic...so can other cultures. Every country has bad things and good things. Can't go to restaurants here either, whatever your skin color. But at least they're taking it seriously. Much prefer it to the patch...

Re: COVID-19

@bigato I can agree with this sentiment. Seems like going "back to the way it was" just opens us up to more situations like this down the line. Sure, it's COVID-19 now, but in a few years, it could be something else. Systems need to adapt. Will they is a different question. Even if one is on the "it...

Re: PSA: China hiring teachers like whoa

For me, I left because of the environmental factors, not the culture or even the politics. Poor food safety, much harder to eat healthy, and pollution. Universities pay less, but you work less, and have less pressure. It is the better gig imo, but it depends on your goals and your work ethic. Some p...

Re: An American Millennial

Perhaps your girlfriend and you could work abroad for American companies in the future to lower your taxes to just FICA taxes. 6 months in Mexico, 6 months in Colombia or Peru so you're still close to home and within a few timezones but you're also adventuring, have great weather, and are around na...

Re: An American Millennial

what r probabilities to get hired as English tutor in SEA while not being native (English) speaker? have u found any blogs on this? I would also be interested in teaching older audience. I'm not sure anymore, but the demand is there. I knew plenty of non-native English speakers who were teaching on...

I still maintain you should count, "succeeded 1 time" instead of "failed 19 times"
Yes, lol.

I ate out as well a lot this month. Every weekend...nearby restaurants so good.

Re: An American Millennial

It will be interesting to see. She's enjoying JavaScript this week, prepping for an entrance test tonight.

Whenever I look at salary threads, I always conclude that I should learn some computer science, switch tech stacks, practice interviews, and apply for some FANG-level companies.

I think my experience happened a long time ago. SARS seems to have stopped this cultural behavior. Here is an old article about it from the SARS era. Apologies for my ignorance and cultural insensitivity.
I still saw this sort of behavior in China in 2019. We didn't use serving spoons.

Re: An American Millennial

I think it is more typical for a company to have an overall compensation strategy, than to ask employees to seek competing offers. I agree, I thought it was little strange but I didn't press much. Of course, I don't hold my tongue (I'm not a jerk, I just express myself freely. Not in the offensive,...

Re: COVID-19

I could see it being easier to contain in the US. Hygeine practices while I was in China, Shenzhen no less which is one of the most advanced and newest cities there, were extremely poor. No soap in public restrooms, people "wash" their hands sometimes after using the restroom, and wash in quotation ...

Re: An American Millennial

I'm not 100% sure the requirements/potential for her career after the master's, it's more something for her to work towards, not something that I really consider too much. She's her person. I think though that the certification requires in-person hours, which she is already employed and accumulating...

Re: An American Millennial

It's a tough decision for her. The bootcamp though is $15k after securing a job in the first year. It is full-time in-person. The risk is relatively low, aside from opportunity cost. Also the master's is $20k over 2 years, I got the number wrong. She's a smart girl, though, and I know she will be fi...

Re: An American Millennial

She'd want to shoot for BCBA, hoping for around $60k+ starting. And then the masters is online for $10k over 2 years. But it's not really my place to tell her what to do.

Re: An American Millennial

After finishing this last full-stack app that 40% of company's revenue goes through, got promoted to Full-Stack Web Developer (i.e. dropped 'Junior' title). Feels good, but I don't know if it has any other monetary raise attached to it outside of the raise I asked for back in January. Salary is 66k ...

Re: An American Millennial

I don't really get stressed about work outside of the one crunch that I mentioned. It was stressful early on, like the first month when I wanted to be as good as I could be, but that was all stress I put on myself. There hasn't been any external stress. A lot of learning happens on the job. I think ...

Re: An American Millennial

Just fears mostly. There's not a lot of people out, it's dark, muggings and assaults reported a couple times per month, seemingly random targets. These things weren't a concern where we were in China. We haven't acclimated to it. It's just something we have to deal with here. It's like the US's vers...

It is pretty good and everything is close. But it is much more expensive than China, and we feel much more anxious going outside at night than we ever did in China.

Re: An American Millennial

Built full-stack LMS for our bootcamp in 3 months. It's got about 50 daily users now and I'll be working on it through February before moving on to building a new version of our threat/vulnerability platform that we use to communicate with clients. Used the momentum from finishing the LMS to ask fo...
