Re: Deer tick removal tools

For ticks, we used to light a match and hold it up to the tick. The tick will detach itself and try to crawl away from the fire and then you can dispose. I hope it's on your dog and not you! This method is not recommended, because when the tick detaches voluntarily it regurgitates into the wound, w...

Re: Deer tick removal tools

I've removed hundreds of ticks from me and my dog(s), and honestly I've never found anything better than just pinching the tick body between thumb and forefinger solidly and slowly pulling it away from the skin. You get the head, and that's really all that's necessary. I also haven't seen any eviden...

Re: Best Solar Power for Macbook Pro and Cell Phone?

Mine is an aluminum unibody MBP from 2011 or so. I know the charger does all sorts of fancy sensing stuff, but when I hooked it up to my homemade charger* it charged with no issue. At least on a short term basis (the solar power isn't all hooked up yet, so I just function tested it). Beyond just ne...

Re: C40's Journal

The blogs that seem to do the best in the FIRE/lifestyle design niche offer a lot of transparency around finances, in my experience. People want to read your story and dream about how they can achieve it, and seeing the actual hard data helps with that I think.

Re: C40's Journal

SLO, Santa Barbara, and San Diego are all great. Although I also loved LA when I lived there. But it takes some time to get into.

Re: Early Retirement Medium-ish

Thanks! I have roommates at the moment, and I'll definitely be staying in Nashville. But I've been hunting for another house for me to live in, sans roomies. It's hard because my criteria are strict (I need a place with either a garage or a basement and a second unit I can use for rental income) and...

Re: An American Millennial

You're correct in that you're in the wealth accumulation phase, which is precisely why you need better employment than a grocery store. And better than sporadic part-time internet work.

Early Retirement Medium-ish

Hello, all. I've been kicking around the forums lately (as it's been too hot here in Nashville to do any of the projects I'm working on), but haven't formally introduced myself. I'm 36, male, with a background in electrical engineering. Depending on how you define early retirement, I retired either ...

Re: The Journal of Spartan_Warrior

I hear your objections to amazon's death grip on epublishing, and the monopoly therein. I feel similarly about itunes for digital distro of music. But the fact is that they provide the ecosystem through which people who live all over the world can discover and purchase my music (and in very small dr...

Re: ffj's early retirement

@JT Thanks for the interest. Keep in mind the width of the cabin was only 10 feet with a lightweight metal roof, plus I put in two double ties. A ridge beam would have been way overkill. Trust me, I overbuild everything. :) The cripple studs don't concern me either as the roof is so lightweight and...

Re: ffj's early retirement

Really enjoyed reading your journal, especially all the builds. My kinda stuff. I wanted to mention a few things, though: Re: the treehouse You didn't install cripple studs over the headers of your doors and windows. Or at least I didn't see them in any pictures. I only saw them where you needed a n...

Re: The Journal of Spartan_Warrior

S_W: I'm new here, and I'm reading through the journals as I get bored and/or the weather is too extreme for me to build things. Yours was really interesting. A few things I picked up on that I wanted to mention. You mention repeatedly how discouraging writing is for you because it's "a loser invest...

Re: Best Solar Power for Macbook Pro and Cell Phone?

Yeah, that's a different scenario than me (10 year old Honda Pilot).

My primary concern is charging via an inverter, since I wouldn't charge in my car regardless.

Re: cmonkey's journal

Cool, thanks for sharing. I have quite a bit of cash on hand I'm looking for places to invest, but with stocks and real estate both high in the areas I'm knowledgeable about I've been looking more to P2P. If you go with LC, the two criteria that I have deemed most important to my higher returns are...

Re: Best Solar Power for Macbook Pro and Cell Phone?

1) Your accessory loads aren't the main things alternators power, and 2) Really, I misspoke. The alternator is certainly one limiting factor (anyone who's done car stereo installs will tell you alternator upgrades are a pretty standard part of running a speaker amp), but even beyond that is the wiri...

Re: Asexual Money Conscious Millennial

Now I'm confused whether you identify as asexual or not. You can't possibly be asking this about 7wb, can you? (If you're asking about the OP Millennial (Denise), she's asexual, as evidenced by the titles on the links and explained in one of her blog posts) I had read the website, but I was reading...
