Re: SustainableHappiness Journal

Recently went back to work after another year off. Skillz In the year off some skills-related things I did were DIY a interlocking brick patio and a nice deck for our backyard, since ours was rotting away rapidly. I knew it was the right decision when I was demo-ing the old deck and some of the jois...

Re: Stop 401k to pay off mortgage?

The distinction between finances and emotions doesn't make sense to me. My finances are there to maximize my emotional well-being. If you aren't using wealth to make your day-to-day life happier what's the point (that can include massing massive amounts of money just because it makes you feel good)....

Re: SustainableHappiness Journal

Began another year long leave from work last month. So far I've worked about 50% of the time in the past 5 years. Being at home with the kids is more difficult in different ways than going to a job. Granted my job doesn't feel too much like work in general at the moment. The 3rd kid changed the game...

Re: SustainableHappiness Journal

Quick Update: 3rd baby coming soon. Going on my 2nd parental leave which will end up lasting about 12 months including vacation time. Really leaning into the serial mini-retirements and a career I relatively enjoy (that doesn't pay as much) lifestyle and it's working, although I have a couple week &...

Re: 2021 (Old 2018) Goals/Resolutions Thread

Thanks for bumping this ertyu. I just reviewed my goals from 2018. They were all accomplished by August 2020. So 2.5 years to get them done. We've also added another member to our family in that time, which wasn't really a goal, more a "continuing on the chosen life path". For 2021: 1) Con...

Re: SustainableHappiness Journal

1 years since last post, probably about 8 months since I visited the forums, but it popped into my head this morning. Thought it might be time for an update. - Kids are great. - We purchased a home to live in in the summer (sold rentals)...Actually we purchased a home luckily in the single month tha...

Re: COVID-19

@bigato Social distancing fucking sucks. I'm an anti-hermit, I think I got pegged at >90% extroversion on one of the personality pigeon-holers that has gone on this forum. Our family has decided our limit is seeing our parents (our young kids g-parents) on the weekends, we typically go and stay for ...

Re: The AirBnB and house hacking bubbles

Related to this. I just found out that the 6 month potential mortgage relief in Canada does not apply to rental properties. Landlords who over extended themselves are freaking out.

Not just AirBNB I guess.

Big news from Canadian Covid 19 Relief. New $75 Billion CAD bill passed (that's like almost twenty bucks american), the biggest addition is: To support workers and help businesses keep their employees, the government has proposed legislation to establish the Canada Emergency Response Benefit (CERB)....

Re: COVID-19

Update from Ontario, Canada. Cases increasing like the rest of the world. What's being done: All non-essential businesses closed as of tonight (Tuesday, March 24th). List of essential businesses just released today (if you are looking for another data point on what may stay open in your country/stat...

Re: What are you doing during the confinement ?

We have a toddler and a baby at home. All of the activities we typically do (1 or 2 a day) are closed down, e.g. library, free programming around the city. Luckily the snow melted over the last couple weeks and going outside for long stretches of time is now a desirable option for the toddler (he wa...

Re: COVID + Residential Real Estate?

Last time I checked prices in Ontario were completely insane relative to rent and average yearly salary, so I wouldn’t be looking to buy regardless. Depends on where you are in Ontario. I.e. not the Greater Toronto Area = about half the price. Also, rents have also been increasing >10% per year in ...

COVID + Residential Real Estate?

Since this forum seems to have a knack for interesting data points, please help. We are in the process of looking for a long term house to purchase in Ontario, Canada. I'm convinced that although mtg rates dropped recently in the states, watching what happened in the Chinese housing market (crickets...

Re: On the crossroads – should I accept a promotion, ask for more money or quit and do semi-ERE?

Quitting with FU money has worked out well (2+ years out) for me and my family. I highly recommend it if your exit plan if fairly robust. The scariness wore off after a couple months of realizing my life doesn't end when my primary career and cash flow did. I've ended up in a higher autonomy gig wit...

Re: SustainableHappiness Journal

October Update It’s been a while since I’ve updated on here, mainly due to enjoying the summer and adding a family member. Family Baby SH #2 arrived in August, and she is healthy and happy. She’s been smiling for a couple weeks now and it’s back in the heart melting infant stage. We are also back t...
