December 2, 2022 Net-worth: $524k (Up $29k) Finances: Net-worth is up but outside of fixed expenses just a lot of things occurred this month: Bailing out my Brother and his family from near homelessness ($800), Medical bills because myself, Spouse, and son all got flu in November and Spouse/Son als...

Re: Best books on depression?

I'll add that while ground flaxseed has a lot of ALA - what you're really looking for on the physical/mental health benefit front is he DHA/EPA which is a byproduct of ALA conversion. This conversion in humans occurs rather poorly (something like 3-10% of ALA is actually converted to DHA/EPA); howev...

1.) I've been trying to make a 'delicious' vegetable soup for a while now and I think I finally found my methodology while also keeping the meal simple.. Something I learned recently is that garlic has a different taste profile depending upon whether you cook it at the beginning (like sautéing with ...

Re: Let's talk about how to avoid darknetting ERE

Small-talk is sufficiently simple to meet the short&simple criteria. Something like climate change, cultural evolution, or subjective depth is not. I remember the climate wars on the forum. Initially, the strategy was short&complete responses, but without a background (90% will simply not c...

Re: Any Data Analysts?

@ertyu I'd go with the first one. When starting in this profession...look for generalized skills that can be applicable just about everywhere like SQL or Python. It looks to me like the "Google Data Analytics Professional Certificate" provides that generalized basis. And also gives your re...

I'm a data analyst and will say that his thread is extremely accurate. Double that because I'm in the government. Contrasting viewpoint FWIW - certain personality types (like mine) flourish just fine being Sisyphus. I used to joke with my buddies when I was in the military doing post-typhoon cleanup...

Re: Day of Eight Billion

Perhaps. I've been influenced by these boards quite a bit. And I'm reading a book on ecology right now and I can't help but make the connection that ERE can be seen as an "ecological niche." Like this flowchart from the book I'm reading: There is a constant competition for food and resourc...

Re: Day of Eight Billion

There is still massive resistance from suggesting to people to consider reducing ones own consumption. I've heard the suggestion IRL that climate change is code word for "social engineering." Some weird propaganda or denialism or something else - and I can only facepalm realize further con...

Re: Lemur Journal!

I experimented with this (greatly reducing fats in the diet) for a few weeks. Mainly to see if I can optimize things even further. But this one did not end well for me. The diet tasted plain, I couldn't really adhere (first time literally all year that I started back bingeing on junk foods like suga...

It’s been years since I’ve coded in R, but I code almost exclusively in SAS now. Our employer is having us upgrading to SAS Viya from SAS Studio. The former allows you to integrate with GitHub but also write Python programs.

Re: Is there a name for this phenomenon?

If you don’t believe in free will, then you can be kinder to yourself. I find that even small bouts of mindful meditation to be useful. About 5 minutes worth. Perhaps even preferable. I think I chase long-term well-being even if it means I’ve to experience pain in the short run. I’ve come to appreci...

Re: Is tilting index funds ever a good idea?

I tilted my portfolio this year on large cap value (VTV) after noticing that the total stock market is down ~16% YTD but large cap value has held most of its value at only down 1%. So I wanted my equity mix to tilt towards value specifically because I believe I can still get growth but for less risk...

Also funny enough (and responding to Enfier after almost a year...) that I got sucked back into Reddit in 2022 and ended up deleting my account again lol. I always end up having an unhealthy relationship with technology so for me at least I just delete it all and that solves one part of the equation...

@M Possible your nephews porn addiction is just a coping mechanism to deal with the fact that he doesn’t have the “game” for normal sexual relations in his generation. Also certain porn itself dampens motivation for normal sexual relations as well. Something something dopamine…But can’t say I know m...

Sold and took losses on AMD and the rest of my positions in JPM. I sold VISA a few weeks ago as well. I can just say I was tax loss harvesting but the truth is, it took me a long time to overcome sunk cost fallacy. I feel relieved. I used the capital to purchase more shares of VGIT to move towards m...

Old wives tale for this problem of breaking up kidney stones is to drink a gallon of water with 1/4th if that squeezed lemon…Not sure if there is any truth to that.

That's a steal on the quinoa. We used to have a guy in our neighborhood who would set up these food giveaways at the local park for food that would otherwise be thrown out by the local Walmart. I'd get a ton of produce and freeze them. Items that were just 1 day past "expiration." The bana...

META PE @ $8.78. Earnings Yield 11.37% I don't use social media anymore so I'm not up to date with what "Facebook" is up to lately but I can only gather from the headlines that basically META is a money-making machine but its CEO has gone mad with all-in investment on the Metaverse. So tha...

Umm…I’m not so sure. Usually I see that term used in the context of accomplishing something small and insignificant- related to an everyday responsibility that normal functioning adults do on a daily basis without celebration or award. Maybe some adulting is relative though. “Normal Functioning” imp...
