Re: What do you do for work?

I'm a government employee. So in D.C. no one bats an eye. To anyone else, they might joke that hopefully I don't work for the IRS. When I do retire...I have always figured a good answer would be a financial portfolio asset manager that works remote. No need to elaborate that the assets are your own ...

Re: Quote file on 2011-04-02

The philosopher Diogenes was eating bread and lentils for supper. He was seen by the philosopher Aristippus, who lived comfortably by flattering the king. Said Aristippus, "If you would learn to be subservient to the king you would not have to live on lentils." Said Diogenes, "Learn ...

Re: The ERE Wheaton Scale

Capitalism is also extremely fast at spreading new information. For example, if a train derails with thousands of units of hot in-demand product X, then prices will be reflected from that event almost immediately. Far more efficient then planned price systems. Its the negative externalities from thi...

May 1, 2024 Net-worth: $857k (Down $16k) Finances: I cannot remember the last month where our net-worth did not see an increase. Weirdly, it felt somewhat relieving to see a bit of a break. Maybe some consolidation and slowdown in the market. Spending/SWR: $2701.83 for the month. Over the $2500 mon...

Re: Are we in a vehicle bubble?

My wild guess about this phenomenon is that used cars are priced too high right now so people figure to just buy a new car.

Re: Just Gravy

Nope, haven’t read those. I once read a book on the Russian Revolution in 1917/1918 (I couldn’t finish it) and some U.S Civil War collections but beyond that I can’t seem to get into the literature and prefer documentaries.

I also get into a war kick like once a year...just got out of one recently. If you need more war ideas, "The Vietnam War" documentary by Ken Burns and Lynn Novic is 10 episodes / 18 hours total. I ended up reading some of Ho Chi Minh's collected writings by Bernard Fall afterwards. The Vie...

Re: Fixit Log

I’n familiar with those cables. I had a Nissan Maxima when I lived in Guam and those terminals rusted all the time due to the humid and rainy environment. I had a wire brush handy and it was standard maintenance to keep the terminals cleaned. Usually performed at the same time as doing the oil chang...

19 year old Lemur owned a 1985 Camaro Iroc z28 because he thought it would be cool. It kinda was lol. But I spent the next two years basically replacing everything on that POS. That was my crash course in vehicle repairs. Battery, belts, alternator, tires, fuel pump, spark plugs, oil pump, water pum...

Re: Mommy, my sister is teasing me!

From what I remember reading in "How I Found Freedom in an Unfree World" by Harry Browne, the author brings this sunk cost topic up quite a bit. And he relates it not only to finance but to relationships and other life conditions. I'm rephrasing, but he stated something to the effect of th...

Re: A Journey of Mindfulness--the Remaking of Life in Midstream.

I've contemplated before how many of the world's problems might be caused not only by terror management but because our lives are relatively short. How might human behavior be altered if, say, the average life expectancy was 500 years? or 1000 years? Surely more long-term planning and thinking would...

March 31 ,2024 Net-worth: $873k (Up $43k) Finances: Insanity to see our portfolio making these month to month increases. Seems unsustainable lol. Spending/SWR: Another spendy month $3,483.77 due to our planned trip this summer for plane tickets, Air BnB, and rented car. Annualized and divided by cu...

@giskard Yeah, I’ve been following this one with some interest. DJT - Valued at approximately $12,000 per user. Twitter - Valued at approximately $38 per user. One or two well-run McDonalds chains makes more revenue…DJT has a lock-up period of 6 months to sell his shares unless the board creates an ...

New Concept I learned recently: Wittgenstein’s Ruler: https://coffeeandjunk.com/wittgensteins-ruler/ Also a neat proverb I came across in Spiral Dynamics book: No more prizes for forecasting rain; only prizes for building an ark. Lastly, speaking of SD, if you want to watch a really awesome Red/purp...

@zbigi I was just thinking that if the indexes are market-cap weighted, then FAANG can definitely take over. Maybe doesn't need to be the amount of companies but how powerful just the few of them are relative to the other industries. If Oku is right, and this is the future, then I will be ObeseFIRE ...

Re: Investments Trade Log

Growth must eventually calm down, of course. Though, it does seem we are exceeding Moore's law for GPU's (more than doubling compute every two years). Energy cost also seems to be going down by a quarter every two years. We'll see if Huang's law continues. Maybe Jevons paradox can be neutralized wi...

Re: Investments Trade Log

@Oku I'd wager those SWRs are definitely out of reach. Maybe in the short-term, the owners of capital will benefit greatly from automation. Everyone else is kind of SOL unless worldwide governments step in to limit the blow to labor. It is possible our generation (anyone dying before 2100 or so) can...
