ETF 'heartbeats'

Seems part of the success of ETFs in the US is due to a tax dodge (heartbeat trades): https://www.bloomberg.com/graphics/2019-etf-tax-dodge-lets-investors-save-big Would that apply to ETFs only, or could funds like Berkshire do something similar? It's interesting if active management gets penalized ...

Re: Sleeping problems

In addition to the excellent advice above: Is breathing through the nose a problem during the day too, or only at night? If the latter, might allergies be a problem? Iirc some sleep meds can have a antihistamine-like effect, which might be an alternative explanation for why they work well for you. M...

Re: Investments Trade Log

Another way of seeing that is that the short rate is too high relative to the overvalued stocks. Hence prob. also why the fed put a damper on the hikes. They've truly backed themselves into a [very profitable for contrarians] corner. Who would be the contrarians in this scenario? In related news, t...

Re: Introducing myself: HappyDane - or working on it:-)

Welcome to the forum, @HappyDane! As Fbeyer said, we have a good Cph community with different people and different approaches to FI/ERE. You should definitely join a meetup. They are always inspiring, and we are happy to see new faces. It sounds like you are well on the way to FI. Are you counting t...

Re: Meditation and Metacognition

A while back I was talking to a neuroscientist studying the effect of meditation. They were looking for consistent changes in patterns of brain activity. Problem was, the patterns were all over the place! They saw changes in individuals, but changes were, well, individual. No obvious common pattern....

Re: Positive psychology

For example instead of focussing on yourself all the time (which the vast majority of people do 24/7) focus your thoughts on other people and making their life and situation and comfort better. iirc that's also the final conclusion to the Dale Carnegie classic "How to win friends and influence...

Re: BadHorse's slow trot towards FI

Digging up and dusting off this good ole journal for an update. Money: Meh and Sigh So in my usual unintentionally unconventional way, I've managed to be one of the few people who actually lost money going the ERE route. I've always been naturally frugal, with no particular overarching plan but a fe...

Re: FI or bust; FBeyer.

Well I read it to be up-to-date for the meet-up this weekend :D

Seriously though, I'm hoping to hear more about your potential new job, it sounds awesome. One of my (many!) FI fantasies has been starting a bio-sustainable robotics-based permaculture farm on Bornholm.

Re: Wizards' journal (ERE in Denmark)

Impressive as always, glad it's going so well! :) If you really get nothing but the money out of the part time gig, then it does sound a bit pointless when you don't need the money. Do you think there is any potential value to maintaining some sort of connection with the job market? Like CV or up-to...

Thanks for sharing these, lots of inspiration. I sometimes daydream of a tiny house+greenhouse combi. Maybe even a tiny house within a not-so-tiny greenhouse.

EREish village in Denmark

"A sustainable, waste- and debt-free society" starting up next year* in Ebeltoft, right under the drippy nose of Jutland. https://grobund.org Looks interesting from an ERE perspective. From what I understand, it is intended to incorporate: 1) A large, currently vacant, factory building to ...

Looks pretty awesome! Is Denmark warm enough for sweet potatoes? Kansas is quite a bit further south and inland.

Re: Mechanical protection against garden slugs?

Ah, the infamous "killer slugs", bane of garden beds and ecosystems alike. These were the main reason I gave up on gardening, after realizing that 90% of the time is spent violently killing things, not tenderly nurturing little seedlings. So much for meditative hobbies. Like @Eureka said, ...

Re: Next Copenhagen meet-up

isn't it preferable to organize one's life so that there is no need for escapes or trips away from it? No arguing there!! The challenge is just how to go about it so that you can: 1) Be where you want 2) when you want 3) doing what you want 2) with the people you want to be with Looking forward to ...

That travel insurance looks interesting.. will have to check it out. So far I've just got the account. Do you know if it's just a 'delays & lost luggage' insurance, of if it also covers stuff like accidents, illness, and helicopter rescue from unexpectedly erupting volcanoes? I would guess the f...
