I think this is way out of the scope of early retirement, if I wanted a forum full of this stuff I'd visit Redit.
It was nice while it lasted.

Re: Guns in America
Government versus 1 guy or small group - you're correct. Government versus 100+million armed citizens, many who have military training in explosives, plus the general population that could make firebombs, IEDs, and conduct active sabotage to essential infrastructure, its a different story. And you'...

On the other hand I never tip in the UK, mainly because we have a minimum wage that puts a base on how much staff are paid.

Re: Guns in America
Firearms are an egalitarian force in our society. They empower the little guy. The people with power have to factor in that the guy they want to push, may have a surprising amount of push back. Can you give an example of where an armed insurrection has pushed back against the state in recent histor...

Prohibition does not work, never has and never will. What percentage of deaths come from mass shootings vs police brutality? It has worked in the UK and Australia. If you want to talk about police brutality there were four deaths attributed to the police in the UK during 2017 and one of those is di...

@jennyH is there any opportunity to do more of this work in your existing job, it's usually much easier to move sideways within an organisation rather than from outside.

Re: Anyone else underwhelmed by the Olympics?
Yes, I've been somewhat sceptical about it for a long time. In the UK we were sold it on the basis it would regenerate a run down part of London and increase participation in sport. There was some regeneration although we probably could have achieved that with a smaller budget and participation in s...

—something pretty useful to me to be able to build a decent website I see several people have mentioned Python. As much as I like Python it isn't trivial to create a web site with it, you'll need to use something like flask or django, pip to install it then start tinkering with nginx and wsgi to ho...

PHP, I know many in the industry turn their noses up at it but it is very easy to get started with, in particular if you want to create something on the web.

Painful. Watching someone who claims to be a journalist refuse to actually *listen* to the person they are interviewing feeds my cynicism. Its not just that she clearly had a political agenda. Its that she took an opportunity to actually understand and find common ground with political opposition a...

Michelle McGagh: "... by trade I am a financial journalist and I've spent ten years telling everyone what to do with their money and I wasn't actually taking any responsibility for my own." Journalism, a waste of time! Isn't that why you don't buy a car from a car mechanic or a house from...
