Just out of curiosity, Jacob, do you think you would be able to get into Harvard if you wanted to?

Re: The 9.9 Percent Is the New American Aristocracy
What does the author propose the money lenders, lawyers, and doctors do? Oh, I was trying to have a conversation based on the premise that you read the article given by the topic starter, as you would know that the author is not suggesting any solutions. This is just a subjective sociopolitical ana...

Re: The 9.9 Percent Is the New American Aristocracy
So other people's failures and the subsequent loss of earning potential is the fault of the 9% for being successful? WTF? All the troubles they are getting into (debt, poor health, legal problems etc.) becomes a source of income for the 9% (doctors, lawyers, social workers, people who are involved ...

Re: $280,000 for a retired couple?
I'm a nurse and I work and LTC. Before that I used to work in Emerg a little bit. I've seen how LTC patients are created. Sometimes we don't have advanced directives about critical conditions because people don't bother about living will and DNR until it's too late. And we make sure the patient surv...

Re: Frugal living in rural Canada
Well, there are certain advantages too, as not having to have to travel to Khabarovsk to see your parents ( unless you have to go anyways), access to better?? and cheaper?? medical facilities in Canada, opportunity to be closer to your parents when they get older and will need some regular assistan...

Re: Frugal living in rural Canada
K60, boris10475,
That thought did cross my mind, but I could not see how it would be advantageous. My parents both are very involved in the community life where they live, have many hobbies that are only possible there and can't speak English. Plus it would be more expensive. I don't see any point.

Re: Frugal living in rural Canada
JamesR, I have many options, actually, on what to do, I just need to pick a strategy. The struggle right now is philosophical, the paradigm shift in my life. Since I have dependants now with unpredictable circumstances, I can't dream about full freedom anymore. Which is okay, I will readjust my drea...

Re: Frugal living in rural Canada
I'm quite discouraged and disheartened about the perspectives of my FI. It became quite clear that my Mom back in Russia will not be able to get back to work after her back surgery. Everything is okay with her, she's not sick or anything like that. But she's retired and her pension in Russia is not ...

Re: Getting a degree? (I live in Brazil and intend to emigrate)
@CECTPA: Oh, I can relate. I know how hard it is when your country's very culture is contrary to relevant aspects of your nature. Could you please share more about how you managed to "escape?" I just opened this page http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/immigrate/apply.asp and started doing whate...

Re: Getting a degree? (I live in Brazil and intend to emigrate)
Oh, Ego, I can attest that the MB type can change with efforts or just with a situation change, that's for sure! I have been scoring ISFJ at the times I was a bedside nurse. That was a neurotic and uncomfortable experience. Now I'm back to normal, working in the office as a care coordinator, having ...

Re: Getting a degree? (I live in Brazil and intend to emigrate)
Ego, that highly depends on personality. For example, I have been wanting to escape Russia since I was able to make judgements about the societal differences between countries, meaning since I was a teenager. I have a personality of Sheldon Cooper from TBBT, I'm not kidding, I'm the most annoying IN...

Re: Going Vegan
Every last recipe looks delicious. Such a wide variety of foods. Incredible. I love the photo of the giant salad in front of the computer while watching Dr. McDougall. Thanks, I'm glad you're finding them looking delicious, my idea is that plant-based doesn't need to be elitist or hipster-like :uge...

Re: Going Vegan
We've been eating plant-based starch-based for 3 years, it's cheap, efficient, great health results, got off blood pressure meds. I have an instagram for my minimalism-stoicism inspired meals (far_north_starchivore), if you want ideas.

DIY grow lights! The light is actually almost white, but the camera goes crazy in this spectrum. Will start planting starters next week, when the potting soil thaws :-D https://c1.staticflickr.com/3/2762/32319154673_47a24b17d3_z.jpg https://c2.staticflickr.com/4/3755/32752123280_f834d0bd1b_z.jpg

Re: Taking work home
By the end of the week I wanted to get a job doing IT on the night shift. It looked fun. Oh well, I guess from my point of view it wasn't stressful unless they were drawing my blood. I don't mind night shifts if I'm just working as a bedside nurse, drawing blood, giving pills, changing diapers, not...

Re: Taking work home
In case of being a licensed professional it is a bit different. No one tells me what to do. I know what to do because I have policies, guidelines, and standards that guide my profession. I have to make sure my unit is up to the standards. My boss could not care less when I leave work, as long as we ...

Re: Taking work home
Interesting, Riggerjack. That's very true for a big organisation. In a small one it is very clear, who's working and who's not. It's a small hospital and I'm responsible for a unit of 8 beds. And I'm not interested in a promotion or a pat on the back. It just feels good when the work is done right

Re: Taking work home
It's basically salary and I think this is due my time management skills at this time (been on this job for less than 1 month). It should get better. I'm just developing my way to do routines and learning where to delegate, and the amount of work doesn't look overwhelming so far. But sometimes someth...
