Re: Anyone make their own yogurt?
yogotherm: where does the heat come from, and how does it keep the right temp, and for how long? Heat the milk in any pot to 85c/185f, then let it cool to 48c/118f and stir in the culture, then pour it into the bucket. Edited to add: I just do it overnight. I think I've gone over 12 hours. It just ...

Re: Anyone make their own yogurt?
If you decide to go with a commercial kefir grain, you might check out New England Cheesemaking Supply Company: https://cheesemaking.com/pages/search-results-page?q=kefir+grains I don't make kefir myself, but I really like their yogurt cultures, and I feel like they've earned my trust on quality. (A...

Re: ERE City (US)
I've been thinking about how the past couple of years has reshaped my idea of what makes for a good ERE-style location. The general community, local officials, and state officials response to the pandemic makes where I am now look pretty good. Though when fire season rolls back around, it will proba...

Re: Best storage containers for bulk dry goods?
Buckets with gamma seal lids are good. For smaller quantities, you can leave things in the bags and store multiple bags in the same bucket. If you are short on indoor storage space, as I am, you might be tempted to store the buckets outside (they are wonderfully rodent resistant)—however, I haven't ...

For the extreme environmentalism or anti-civ perspective:

I think INFJ-leaning folks (like me) can particularly appreciate it.

Re: Starting a Learning Tribe
It seems to me that getting the underlying structure of such meetups would have a big impact on their success. I am a little fascinated by how well a tightly-run 12-step meeting works. Set aside any notions about the content of 12-step meetings, that's NOT this thread, but look at how successful (ie...

Re: Alternatives to Google News?
Maybe the best source of news is the long term version. That's the premise of "The Correspondent"—pitched as "unbreaking news": https://thecorrespondent.com/ https://boingboing.net/2018/11/14/jay-rosens-letter-to-my-ne.html Though the frequency is somewhat more than a decade. :)

One of my favorite forum threads to check in on, from time to time, is "day in the life of a locksmith" on the Lockpicking 101 forums: http://www.lockpicking101.com/viewtopic.php?f=46&t=62671&sid=7e73924fc6fc4106fc65b06b43148427 It sounds like a mix of interesting problem-solving s...

++ for toothpaste, but I've also used Bon Ami, the OLD formulation (red can w/yellow print, 1886 formula—you may have to order online). Do NOT use the more common formula out there now, the shiny gold can w/red print. I'm due for this again and will probably try the Bon Ami and follow it with toothp...

Re: Detroit revival
Bumping this after seeing 7Wannabe5's reply in the tiny house thread. I'd like to understand more about Detroit and what the possibilities are, esp. for 50+ folks. I have a big concern is coming in as an outsider (though I grew up in rural NW Ohio, listening to WJR-Detroit and cheering for the Tiger...

Toothpaste can be a useful soft polisher. Used to use it on my timex watch face. Just used it to remove the very last bits of residue of a label on a plastic container I wanted to keep.

Re: Hello from Sonoma County, California
Yes, maybe. I'm on the low end of that food chain, but it's a relatively lucrative food chain. I've got a bad emotional loop over being angry about paying to the IRS and wanting to spend on myself before they get it. I need to just get over it to some extent; this is a good outlet for doing somethin...

I like to make "breakfast bowls", layering in various ingredients depending on what's on hand, and topping w/fried, scrambled, or poached egg. Pick your favorites and put them in a bowl: Beans Rice Chopped blanched kale Sauteed Greens Avocado Potato Chopped chicken-apple sausage Other left...

Hello from Sonoma County, California
Hi! Been happily reading along for a week here. Really enjoying finding this community. At 52 years, I find that I have squandered my opportunities for FI so far, so it will be interesting to see how much I can change that. My savings are practically nil. I'll have a big IRS debt (probably about $9k...
