Re: Trailblazer's Journal

Random anecdote from SE Asia. I really wanted sushi after seeing it several times so went to a restaurant more expensive than normal. I randomly ordered a few things. They were good but I was definitely just pointing at things and wasnt all that satisfied with what I got. A local family then came in...

Re: Trailblazer's Journal

2022 was a pretty extroverted year - spent quite a bit of time travelling (bouncing around Europe and Mexico on the bus with a few US road trips). Also spent a good chunk of the year sharing a rental house with a few good friends and enjoyed that. 2023 was quieter - spent most of the year in my home...

Re: Trailblazer's Journal

I hope you keep writing and update the ERE community periodically. I'm curious to hear more about the ongoing attempt to carve your own path and your efforts to refrain from the traditional vision of success. Thanks Western Red! A few more months of life have gone by so time for an update. Nomadic ...

Re: Trailblazer's Journal

Random quick update Back in the US after several months in Europe - glad I went when I did as several of the countries are starting to lock down Now doing a very slow travel road trip. Spending most my time reading (or now a days, mostly listening to podcasts and audible). Also a few early business ...

Re: Trailblazer's Journal

Thanks c_L - that would be fun. I'll reach out when I'm in your neck of the woods. The reality is that the best way for me to quickly earn money is to keep plugging away at my prior career. Even in a more "start up" environment, it's still a slog. I've had a few projects in a row where I'v...

Re: Trailblazer's Journal

I'm fully retired again. After a bit of part time work this Fall I've decided to pull the plug on any sort of formal professional work unless a truly compelling opportunity comes along. The value of my time is just too great. I want 100% freedom to spend the day as seems best. Tons of reading and wa...

Just saw this thread - you are living a life very similar to what I'm looking for - including spending levels - keep sharing, especially any ideas on money management! Thanks

Re: Trailblazer's Journal

Pretty much retired for the moment. Lots of time reading and walking. Averaged 80k steps a week for the last two months - want to get that to about 100K. Doing a series of long-term stays in hotels and Airbnb - booking a month at a time and so far have been able to get some decent deals by picking U...

Re: SIT's Journal

That’s an impressive monthly budget - wish I could hit those numbers consistently.

What are you currently doing to work on conquering the social anxiety? How would it increase your income (e.g. could you move into management, sell more, etc.?)

Re: Trailblazer's Journal

Hi c_L - nothing like a US road trip. You are right about things opening up. About 90 minutes outside of SF I stopped for my first restroom break. I was still in an urban area (this was several weeks ago) and the first 3 or 4 restrooms I tried were all closed (gas station, fast food restaurant, rest...

Re: Trailblazer's Journal

Net worth again sits in the mid 300K range, though it reached a peak of 485K before dropping to 205 and then recovering (somewhat) over the past 6 weeks. I remain 100% in equity for now. My current lease recently ended so I’m currently traveling and working on projects remotely. Plan to do that for ...

Re: Multifactor investing

Alpha Architects has some great research/articles on value and momentum. Their work seems to be academically rigorous and avoids hype. I've read several of their more detailed books as well about quantitative value and momentum. They offer several value and momentum ETFs for both US and Internationa...

Re: Trailblazer's Journal

Random update time . . . With the dawning of a new decade (2020!) I’ve been pondering where I want to be 10 years from now when we welcome 2030. Now that I’ve entered my 40s (age wise) it feels like this is the make or break decade in my life. I have three main goals: 1) vocation; 2) relationship - ...

Re: Trailblazer's Journal

I'm curious to read those, if you feel like sharing. Glad you enjoyed the time off and good luck on the next venture. Thanks @c_L for your continued interest! I need to do a more detailed post, but in short part of me thinks I could do well in a truly entrepreneurial start-up type situation, but I ...

Re: Trailblazer's Journal

What made you decide it was time to take the months off? Burn out, tired, just felt the urge? A little of each, but I’ll go with “just felt the urge.” The start-up gig was beginning to feel a bit too much like traditional full-time employment, and I had an urge to hit the road and travel. I’ve now ...

Re: Trailblazer's Journal

Time for an update - it's been a while! I'm in Europe right now enjoying a 3 month break from work. Net worth still sits right at 350K. Psychologically that always feels like "enough" to me and I lose all motivation to earn more income. I'm supposed to go back to work next month. The senio...

Re: 65 Days To ERE - Backpacking, Thru-Hiking, Van-Living & Shenanigans!

Sabbaticals are rarely planned in the American corporate career path. Fully agree and it's a shame. My concern in this case is that the sabbatical is not planned from the perspective of the employer. If in an FU situation, then may as well go for the leave. But I think it is at best a risky move if...

Re: 65 Days To ERE - Backpacking, Thru-Hiking, Van-Living & Shenanigans!

Congrats on your continued progress. After all these years of preparation, taking the extended time off is going to give you some great additional data points about what to do next! I think there's one other option between "rage quit" and "tough it out". What would happen if you ...

Re: Trailblazer's Journal

Thanks everyone for the dialogue! My current spending is designed to maximize convenience and eliminate all time and mental energy not spent on either 1) work or 2) intentional free time activities (e.g., reading, strength training, writing this journal entry, meditative walk, etc.). Convenience inc...
