@JollyScot: Sorry I didn't respond sooner. That portfolio chart things is pretty good. Not sure assuming bonds will do what they did in the last 40 years is useful. None the less it is useful to see how the deemed withdrawl rates move about. I think it was Mark Twain who said "History doesn't r...

Re: Niemand's Journal

In early 2016 I posted that DW and I are making strong strides towards 25 years of Aussie expenses saved and should have them in the bag – ceteris paribus – in 2,000 days or so. 2,000 days later is kind of TODAY, and today nothing is nowhere near ceteris paribus... Not going into detail, some truly ...

Re: Niemand's Journal

With the Covid working from home situation my eating patterns slipped into some sort of intermittent fasting routine without really noticing. These days I often only have a café latte with a teaspoon of coconut oil in the morning and then a big dinner in the evening, that's it. This change in eating...

Thanks for the link from my side @wolf. I’ve been struggling with sleep recently, and I think I’ll start ditching the smartphone at night to improve “sleep hygiene” going forward.

What have you learned since starting your dumbphone experiment?

Re: So where is the much-touted inflation?

@Alpha: Eh? Negative inflation (= deflation) means decreasing price levels. This includes prices for things you buy AND sell. If you sell your labour for a wage, you should be worried about stagnating or shrinking wages in a negative inflation situation. The sweet spot for an economy seems to be 2-3...

Spring is here! I was considering setting up raised garden beds but decided against it in the end. Instead I'll just have a handful of potted vegetables. I'm raising some tomatoes, lettuce and capsicum from seed right now that I'll plant in pots once they're ready to go outside. Regarding trees, sim...

O Canada. My (only slightly tongue in cheek) reasons are proximity to US, health care, and friendly police. Weather will get better over time.

OP, I know it’s not your climate, but here’s a tour of David Holmgren’s and Su Dennett’s property: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=ss1BjW2kSNs Have a look at 2:20 where they start talking about the kitchen and their “cool cupboard”. (They also have an under the counter fridge, but given that Su usuall...

[Rant] To my surprise, when I received my first electricity bill after getting Solar installed, I found out that I was switched into a new tariff that is no good for me and that I apparently can’t get out off (unless I turn my PV system off). Turns out that Ausnet, the monopoly^h^h^h^h^h^h^h^h distr...

Re: So where is the much-touted inflation?

Not sure about points 1-3. Why should it be any different this time than the other times? If you truly believe in the big inflation scenario then hard assets should serve you well, gold, possibly real estate? Maybe also have a look at the Permanent Portfolio. It may be a better option if you don’t w...
