Re: Bitcoin on the rise

This has indeed turned into an interesting thread! I haven't been able to read everything, but glancing through the posts there seems to be a lot of the good old "bitcoin/crypto is the same as tulips/trading cards/whatever speculative crap" going on. This reminds me of a useful quote by Sa...

Holistic Management by Allan Savory: the next level after ERE?

I would like to bring up for discussion the topic of Holistic Management by Allan Savory. Savory is known to quite a few for his tremendous TED-talk on the topics of desertification, the role of livestock in the ecosystem and indeed; management. In my pursuit of freedom, financial independence and a...

Re: my amazing journal

Learning point

I have a small problem in that I struggle to write succinctly. For marketing and business it's no good. Also for politics, which I participate in, it's generally no good.

Even now I just want to keep going and going. There is so much to be said!

Re: my amazing journal

Finances I envy to some extent the other journalers that make wonderful graphical representations of their finances, or even just list the numbers in a tidy fashion, neatly categorized. I have been recording my expenses for many years, though faded out of the habit somewhere around 2019-2020. I sim...

Re: my amazing journal

What is ERE for me? A tool. I prefer to use many different tools and form a strategy based on these. The single goal of FIRE never made sense to me - you work towards FIRE, achieve it, and then ...what? If you grasp the concepts of ERE or any similar writing, achieving FIRE is relatively simple - a...

my amazing journal

I discovered the blog around 2012-13 and got the book shortly after. I've been reading the forum on and off since then, and signed up for a user in 2015. Let me first thank everyone for their contributions. It's hard to describe fully and well the role this forum has played in the development of my ...

Re: Fixit Log

You could also just have made a wooden wheel, Flintstone style. I suspect the tire is liable to "fall" off the non-existing rim in this case. Once that happens, you'll have a Flintstone wheel albeit a smaller one. One way around that which you just about have the tools for would be to use...

Another one from me - the "nose wheel" on my trailer was broken, as happens quite regularly it seems. This was the first time for this trailer however. https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/pw/ACtC-3dzdmC3PdllNNmHOvw05PFjVkCLJxiDtulAurwK94bA3f9KDtfZKazRvrbsmGbJZhrzMZY6HfD6ornyE3JL8VWviPsTlT8Mg...

Re: Ideas needed: How to repopulate village in Northern Norway

Jacob, thank you for your input - this will come in very handy. I was already aware of Transition Network, through a relative whom works with it in the UK, though for some reason I hadn't made the connection. It's a solid way forward. The other points I will definitely make use of in the systematic ...

Re: Ideas needed: How to repopulate village in Northern Norway

I hear this often - Northern Norway has long and dark winters, is incredibly cold and so forth. It's not really that bad at all, and it's not like the nature that is spectacular in summer suddenly turns ugly in winter. There are plenty of places around in Norway with longer dark periods than here, a...

Ideas needed: How to repopulate village in Northern Norway

Hello people, I'm starting up a small farming enterprise in Northern Norway, in what amounts to a rather charming small community. People here are friendly and open, and we have been welcomed very warmly. We too are Norwegians, though from a completely different part - not that it matters, people he...

Re: Learning auto maintenance and repair

Simple answer - get yourself a Volkswagen. Any model of any year will do. Make sure you have no warranty, and that you are broke as well. Also try and have a friend with a Japanese car, so that you can go buy parts with this one, with money that you either get from welfare benefits or your parents. ...

Re: Is it worth it to create joint finances?

Mainly @wood, but also generally: My point earlier was that separate finances are definitely a very good idea if one has low skill in finding a life partner/doing well the things Wannabe is voicing. If, on the other hand, one is good at finding a partner/organizing one's love affairs/having one's sh...

Re: Is it worth it to create joint finances?

It seems like the general tone in the thread is that separate everything is the way to go, which to me is weird. For me, and in order to achieve full embodiment of the ERE philosophy, it doesn't stop at my relationship to a significant other. ERE is to me about analysis of life and subsequent wise d...

Re: Modernist Cuisine

I've read quite a bit of it. It's super interesting, though it really is just a foundation for (hopefully) much more to come. Some parts are tedious - like how much do you really want to know about fluid gels - and other parts downright amazing - everything that has to do with the WHY of how differe...

What I do like though, is mastering the equipment I own and thus utilizin...

Re: Bicycle gears

I just watched this guy who is apparently doing 90 rpm. On those flat parts I was describing I often get to that kind of cadence, and that's when I "run out" of gears (fast) and just have to coast a lot. Many more rpms than that and it starts feeling like a Mickey Mouse thing pretty quickl...

I will investigate the things you have said, I very much enjoy maintenance and tinkering, so your tips are very interesting. @jacob: No worries, I appreciate the need for clarity. I like to think that I understand how the gears work, though from...
