A really bad ERE habit is some combination of those two in which the given problem goes unsolved forever/one just learns to live with it. This is "bad sacrifice" territory.
I feel convicted.

Re: Tips for toddlers?

I’m surprised by the number of suggestions to potty train. Is this a generational thing? I’ve always assumed that would be a thing we’d do. I’ve heard of kids not taking well to it or having accidents, but not of parents not attempting it during toddlerhood. We tried to encourage (very lightly, did...

Re: Tips for toddlers?

Be loving. Be firm--you're the boss, not them. Never give in to a tantrum, but explain your reasoning calmly even if they don't understand it (this is good for older kids too). When your kids are older, be willing to change your mind if you can't articulate why you are making a particular rule. Don'...

Re: increasing savings rate vs using your income as an asset?

All savings means the person should be investing. No one recommends saving 70% of your income as cash and not investing it. That said, the fact that you think you should "lower your savings rate" to "use your income as an asset" makes me think that perhaps you're just getting sta...

Re: Gen-Gen Bender Question

Another example would be that in my first marriage I did most of the traditionally male household work; I mowed the lawn, fixed broken sinks, handled all the finances, made most of the plans; but this never caused me to lose my sexual attraction to my ex, I would say there there is a difference bet...

Re: Gen-Gen Bender Question

Sure, but OP indicated that the woman *wants* to. If I had a female partner who said “I love my job but I don’t have a use for all this money, is it cool if I just pay our household operational expenses?” My answer would be “sure, sounds good.” I understand! I'm still just saying that my guess woul...

Re: Americans - Have you had a hospital stay or expensive treatment with health insurance?

This creates heaps of jobs for actuaries! so what would be the price of $99,000 being covered by an insurance? Or if this is too personal, another example just to get a quick idea. This came really late and I didn't see it. That was a weird case where I was in one of those income loopholes and had ...

Re: Gen-Gen Bender Question

When I FIREd, my wife still kept her job as a self-employed author. She worked about an hour a night, five nights a week, and earned about 10k a year. It wasn't money we needed, and it was a small (but helpful) portion of our total income (the rest was dividends from our investments). It would have...

Re: Quitting Alcohol Pros and Cons

One month without alcohol. Should have done this a long time ago. Everything is better. It's very different than when we've quit for things like Lent in the past, when we knew it was temporary and looked forward to the end of the temporary halt. The idea of drinking is starting to feel foreign to m...

Re: Fiction Writing MMG

All the info you put in this thread is super interesting and informative. Thank you for all of it! If you haven't mentioned already (I didn't see it): how long are your better-selling books? I suspect that romance runs shorter than other genre fiction, but any advice you have would be appreciated.

Re: What I Spend

Scaling the home brew to be financially efficient, is going to require significant drinking. And the opportunity cost is notable. Even yesterday, due to the sampling, I missed my gym time. Ok as a one off, but not consistent with my other goals. I think it's too big of a hobby to get into if you ar...

Re: Free will / fatalism / life purpose

Even assuming that criminals don't have free will, one would say that they are dangerous and hurt people and are unable to stop themselves. Therefore, we maybe want to hurt them back so that others will be influenced by fear of the punishment and will not commit those same crimes. Or to hope that th...

Re: bostonimproper's journal

The food guidance that my husband and I have been following has suggested no salt (not even a small amount of table salt) and no refined sugars for baby. We try to make sure their meals have plenty of protein, fat, and a variety of fruits and vegetables. Since we mostly try to feed baby a version o...

Admittedly, I also have the Casio DW5600, cuz how can you not.
I considered the dw5600 as well but all the g-shocks I've seen are huge and I'm a small-wristed guy. I was hoping my brother would get one so I could try it on ;-) They look pretty great.

I considered the f91 before going with the a168, but my other watch is a black faced plain-dialed citizen eco drive on NATO straps so I wanted something retro to mix it up.

EDIT: Not retro. They're both retro. I was looking for the cheesy 80s metallic look.

I'm going to Japan in a couple weeks. When I got back from my bike trip in June the first thing my parents said to me was "we're going on a family trip to Japan this Fall." I said "Cool, have fun." They said "We want you to come." I said "That's not really how my ...

Re: Quitting Alcohol Pros and Cons

Dang, time flies. This month marked 4 years without alcohol. Four years. That's amazing. Today is actually 10 months for me. I never was a "get-really-drunk" or blackout level of drinker, and I think there are probably posts from me on this forum saying I'd never quit drinking. Eventually...
