Re: Your macro/mkt prediction for 2020? Let's see who gets it right

I predict a neutral year, equities wise, hitting November within +/- 5% of where we are now. I'm not sure whether Trump will be reelected, but I predict he gets more individual votes than he did in 2016. If he wins, I see a moderate-to-neutral end of the year. If he loses, I see an immediate bump bu...

Re: Cash or card?

Travel points are basically worthless, especially at ERE levels. Like someone else said, sign ups can be slightly rewarding, but are kind of a hassle. The biggest advantage I have found was with the price protection feature some credit cards offer. If something goes on sale within X days (often 30),...

Re: Fox's Journey: And Onto the Sunlight!

Mortgages are largely not tax deductible anymore since the standard deduction increased so much. I would personally just pay cash for the house to increase resilience and reduce dependence on income. Utah seems really nice. My dad lived there for a while as a young man to ski. Lots of Mormons, which...

Re: Warning: WH seeks to limit/deport immigrants using ACA and other gov. services

So are you really arguing that the government gets to tell you where to live? And that some legal residents of the USA have more rights than others? Whether you think this PARTICULAR policy is just or not is one thing, but the very idea that anyone who is allowed any legal residency within a nation...

How is Thailand going? Are you seeing any of the Visa action that Mr. Free @33 (Dividend Mantra) has been reporting lately? He said he had to leave after being there for the last two years.

Re: Something From Nothing Log

That's how kombucha people are. We brewed it for about six months before getting pretty sure we were being poisoned by it. Everyone says it's safe, but we were increasingly uncomfortable drinking it. We tossed our SCOBY.

Man what a deal. My wife was looking at those for if we switch to full-time RVing. But we live in CA and can't buy them for whatever reason. Something something fluoride. (That part's a joke.)

Re: To eat wheat: yay or nay?

I was skeptical about this at first, but when I tried to make natural sourdough, I found that any conventionally grown flour completely killed my sourdough culture. I had to use organic wheat flour or else the sourdough culture completely died. My wife makes sourdough and we've had a culture for th...

Re: Get Paid $10,000 to Move to Tulsa or Vermont

Boy I'd do Topeka or Tusla in a heartbeat for 10-15 grand. Not sure if it would be worth it given that I could just keep my CURRENT full-time job and make more money though. Need some remote work I guess.

@jacob . Thanks! Now I remember...Would like to calculate this myself soon. Maybe add some different foods as well such as potatoes, beans, lentils, etc...and see what the math comes out to. The good news is that pretty much all the real staples are similar prices (except for white flour, which is ...

Re: The KonMari method

I agree with Ertyu here. I watched Marie Kondo's show on NF (I recommend one episode; I think that's enough. Personally, I liked the one with the guy with like 200 pairs of shoes) and never thought she was a frugalist or advocating frugality. Looking at the interviews she did, I saw immediately the ...

Where are you staying so far? Are you in a hotel or did you find a month-to-month apartment situation? Does the pricing differ either way?

Re: How far are you willing to walk to work?

Just get one of those electric scooters, you can even get some with folding bike tires if you wanted studded tires for winter 45 min commute sounds shitty if you're so close I laughed at this one. I've been trying to talk my wife into letting me get one for like eight months, but it's a nonstarter....

Re: The Man Who Solved the Market

The book is definitely going on my 'check out from the library' pile, along with the new Houllebeque (sp?) novel. Not a huge fan of his writing, but I found Submission to be very thought provoking. Anyone who read that and said he was an Islamophobe missed the point.

How far are you willing to walk to work?

I live just about 3 miles from my office. As a government employee, I can ride public transit for free, which ends up equating to about a 45 minute commute (due to time spent waiting). This is the same as it would take me to walk if I were really hoofing it and averaging 4 mph, but it's far more com...

Re: The Man Who Solved the Market

@MI — It’s a yarn. @Salathor — The book isn’t about politics. It doesn’t even come up until the last couple of chapters. I meant sarcastically that the review overemphasized politics--I'm not sure every review needs to have a disclaimer these days that one of its subjects is a conservative. "For th...

I really feel like the NYT review needed to pull Trump into it a few more times than they did, since this is a book about politics and the election.

Re: Quitting Alcohol Pros and Cons

I haven't been a "drink to get drunk" drinker since before I was 21. For the last ten years or so I've been a 1-2 drinks a day, always more than an hour or two apart, style drinker--I don't even like to get buzzed, but I love the taste of liquor (bourbon and gin for me). I had to quit drinking alcoh...

I think it's true that they are pictograms, yes. They are not hieroglyphs, which describes (as far as I'm aware) specifically the Egyptian writing system.

Pintos, white beans, and lentils. And peanuts, if they're a legume too.

I strongly lislike black beans. All y'all are crazy.
