Re: Dakotan's journal

Congratulations on your early retirement! It sounds peaceful. I am surprised to hear that a house in Canada cost less than in the US, usually it is the other way around.

Re: No Time Like Right Now - sky's journal

This month has been quite busy with home and vehicle maintenance, personal business and family obligations (in a positive sense).

In the past few months I wore out a pair of shoes, the sole is worn and there was a crack or break inside the shoe, which blistered my foot. I had to take a break from ...

Re: The continued viability of the 4% rule in the US in the 21st century

In the ag sector, I would expect that capital would move into mechanization of agricultural processes. This is a continuation of ongoing mechanization of agriculture. I don't see much that would change PE ratios.

Happiness fragments. I like the idea of trying to ratchet up your happiness each day by recognizing good things that happen. Why write them down though? Where would you write them?

Re: The continued viability of the 4% rule in the US in the 21st century

Did they explain why income redistribution would happen?

What I see is that the poor in the US are experiencing cost of living increases with no wage increases at the moment.

Are you sure you need a permit for siding? I know where I live they don't require a permit for siding.

It sounds like you are getting free water? I don't think I would ask any more questions about that, and just use it.

Re: Quality resources on Small Apartment Living?

The campervan waltz.

Each person needs a reclining seat, for reading, laptop viewing, napping, relaxing.

Tabletops can be shared but its better if there is room for each person to work at the same time.

Practices such as always doing the dishes immediately after eating become important. Regular ...

Re: ERE and Electrification

I think there are a lot of people who have an old bike in the basement/garage that they don't ride anymore, but they don't want to sell it out of laziness or emotional attachment to the bike. If you ask around your local social groups, you might find someone who might help you out.

Re: Low-key tools to stay organised, ERE-style?

I use an phone calendar to remind me of things like trash pickup, mow lawn, clean tabletops, pay bills, check accounts, fill tires with air (I have a leaky tire), trim hair, birthdays, appointments.

I use a legal pad on a clipboard for larger projects with many steps. I currently do not have a ...

Re: What is "screen time" and why are some trying to avoid it?

The amount of hours spent on screen time reduces time spent in physical reality. Some reasons why one might be frustrated with too much screen time:

One needs a certain amount of time in the physical world to perform cleaning, maintenance, hygiene, cooking, gardening, exercise, etc. If one ...

Re: ERE and Electrification

If you want a relatively low cost kit to convert an existing bike:

Find either a mountain bike that you can ride comfortably, or a cruiser bike and add a front wheel kit:

https://www.amazon.com/PEXMOR-Electric-Conversion-Controller-Throttle/dp/B0BVM3J5KD

Install a battery, I would recommend a 48V ...

@Jean

Thanks for the link, I will study it! Most of what I know about solar ebikes came from the event The Sun Trip, which is a French organized race. https://www.thesuntrip.com/en/

@7

I enjoyed the challenge of designing and building a solar etrike, but I will say that a two wheel pedal bike ...

Re: ERE and Electrification

I just built it and have only ridden it twice, but it does not seem to affect braking, and when riding I put it in flat top mode, so wind has not been an issue. The frame does create additional weight but so far it does not affect performance very much, as far as I can tell from just a few miles of ...

Re: US low cost living

The nice thing about FI is that you don't have to commute.

I am pretty much settled in my current location and don't plan to move anywhere, but I like to think that I could choose to live anywhere. The decision of where to live depends on price, amenities, proximity of retail, climate, natural ...

Re: US low cost living

Some low housing cost areas are caused by the loss of employment due to plant closures or decline in certain industries. In the 1980's and 1990's the city I live in lost a number of old automotive manufacturing jobs equal to about 20% of the city's population. A lot of people had to move out to get ...
