Re: When a 200,000-Year-Old Culture Encountered the Modern Economy
200,000 years is a long time. Civilization in the Fertile Crescent (Uruk, Ur, Babylon, Sumeria) is less than 10,000 years, maybe closer to 7,000 years, depending on one's definition of when "civilization" starts.

Re: 7Wannabe5- Take 7- The Money Dimple
I have foraged black walnuts, they have a nice flavor. Foraging: Use a device that looks like a wire basket that rolls on the ground. The nuts push through the wires and are collected in the basket. You then pull the wires apart with your hands and dump the nuts into a pail. Hulling: Soak the nuts i...

Re: No Time Like Right Now - sky's journal
I use Climashield Apex: https://ripstopbytheroll.com/collections/synthetic-insulation It is easy to work with. Down has a lot of advantages, but I can't afford a quality down bag (I am too cheap to pay $400). So I make my own for under $100. I don't sell them, I just make them for fun and to learn t...

723g for the 50F, 2.5 osy quilt
942g for the 30F, 5.0 osy quilt
I took the 30F quilt down to 23F last night, before noping out and stacking the second quilt on top.

I have been doing my testing "skin to fabric", in other words, just wearing briefs. My clothes are my emergency equipment that will take my quilt to a much lower temperature if needed.
I agree that a bag is better than a quilt for extreme cold.

Re: No Time Like Right Now - sky's journal
This past month was "Grumpy Bear Wakes From Hibernation" month. I started walking regularly. For the first week I walked 2 miles per day, then after that followed a plan of walk 4 miles if you feel good, 2 miles if you feel OK, and 0 miles if you don't feel good. In particular thinking of ...

Re: Priority 1: Health
I find that walking 2 miles a day is a starting point for becoming my true human bipod self, instead of a screen watching slug. Add to that a program of stretching, and one has the basis to do many other things. Smoothies are great. They do seem to move one closer to one's full potential. It takes c...

Re: Touring, Bikepacking, and Long-Distance Cycling
Thats a nice looking bike. I have a similar handlebar, but I put the bar ends on the inside of the brake levers. It gives me an aero position and it is a comfortable change from the regular handlebar grip position.

Re: Touring, Bikepacking, and Long-Distance Cycling
Gravel roads, singletrack, rails to trails, two tracks are all going to be a lot more fun than sharing a lane with high speed auto/truck traffic. If you start from that perspective, then bikepacking becomes the preferred touring style. Bikepacking is using almost the same equipment as backpacking. Y...

Re: Living a FI (Update)
One needs to have a certain amount of disdain for the current version of human civilization/behavior to avoid getting sucked into keeping up with the Jones' behavior. It is not hard to dislike civilization and the working life, since it is entirely absurd. Creating a separate belief system works for...

Re: 7Wannabe5- Take 7- The Money Dimple
Remember that as soon as you can live on the premises (in the house, car or shed), the property investment is providing a return in savings of the $600 - $700 - $800 in rent that you would be paying elsewhere. That is $7,200 to $9,600 per year, a good return on your investment, even if you have to p...

Have you overclocked? I am running 2.147 Ghz. You need a heatsink and fan though.
