Re: What’s the magic number needed?
Too many variables, including significant unknown unknowns - e.g. traumatic injury/death, child with special needs. Best thing is to minimize expenses, maximize income while maintain mental & physical health and of course invest automatically both via Roth/401K/HSA and reg acct. Just buy S&P...

Can second this as well with a very hectic nearly 3-year old, however, each child is unique and YMMV ..

Hi cmonkey, Sorry to hear about the bowel - you could, of course, make shakes with the Kale and other potentially bowel dangerous veggies so that you get the nutrients minus the bowel issues. As for your savings/yield, I assume the Fed's taper will begin sometime next year, so yields should rise fro...

Err, Andy... "Lekker" is mostly for good food. Hmmm, or good sex... Taxes can be okay, but I've never found them "lekker"... LOL, seemed to have missed this post - I meant that in the NL taxes were put to good (lekker) use, as you stated in your original post. Glad you stumbled ...

I enjoy your thread a lot CM! There's a YTer called Shawn James, he built up his remote cabins in Ontario and he has several "shelters" for his wood. I also noticed this requires some careful long term planning on his part to decide where and what to cut as different trees have different s...

Re: My Three Phase Journey Toward ERE
Trades are a very good way to get to FIRE. I suggest you read this now defunct blog for an electrician cum lawyer turned landlord: http://lackingambition.com/ My one piece of advice - the money you get for your time "working for the man" or for yourself later - invest as much of it as poss...

Re: Semi-retirement locations?
We value privacy very highly, and it incluses other people's privacy. So you have to make it clear that you want more contact. Thé hardest part is to make the différence between someone who doesn't want to disturb you, and someone who want to bé left alone. Asking this question directly is uncommon...

Re: Semi-retirement locations?
Jean - CH doesn't have CG tax because your CG is taxed as ordinary income; you also have wealth tax (not crazy but its there). Also, unless you have an EU passport, living in CH legally isn't even close to being easy ... and I personally love CH, don't get me wrong ... but I think it will prove next...

Velkommen!
Academia is always a possibility - you will get paid to do research (which you seem to enjoy) and you can build a private practice (assuming this is a viable option in DK). I think most ppl have misconceptions about psychiatrists so it will be refreshing to have one here

Re: How will you evaluate this job offer
Assuming kids >> job (the reason you quit in the first place), then: IF the job does not interfere with your ability to have a healthy pregnancy, take it. Assuming you get pregnant 6-12 months after you take the job, you'll have the most natural "out" of the job possible (if you decide to ...

Don't think Spokane qualifies for "sunny and dry" TBH. AZ, CO, and UT all have 5% income tax max (afaik), and TX has none. On the East Coast NC would be my choice in terms of livability, but its not that dry ... since I assume work will pay for most of your flights, you def have some optio...

Dutch tax system is lovely in my opinion - and like in most of Northern Europe, those taxes are actually put to good use. Lekker!!!

Re: My parents announce TARP for siblings
I see much of my own family in your account, and perhaps the gift my DH gave to me will be helpful to you: "If your father doesn't know after 30+ years of observation that you are smart, honorable, a good child, a good *person* - what can you possibly do now that would convince him of your wor...

Re: My parents announce TARP for siblings
. It's a sad reflection on my moral character that I am my own favorite charity. I wouldn't consider it a total loss if grow beyond that a little someday. Charity begins at home. But charity, in my mind, is providing what is essential to as many people as possible. Thus, by being charitable towards...

Smart move on AAPL IMO Lemur - think its going to run into earnings and approach its ATH by the end of April. Only reason it hasn't gone up stronger is weak volume ... I'm personally long some calls, so take my optimism with a grain of salt.

Yes, and she's pragmatic almost to the point of it being an oddity, and just as frugal. Pretty sure I've mentioned this elsewhere but she was diagnosed with an irreversible terminal condition a little over a year ago. There are drugs that could potentially more than triple her life expectancy (from...

@ertyu - appreciate it as much as SClass!
@ID - SClass is spot on, it's thankless, but at least there's someone sensible in your family!

Re: My parents announce TARP for siblings
SClass, I was browsing through old forum posts and lucked into this thread. It made me think about my own family situation (spoiler - too many parallels to make for a pleasant conversation). However, since its roughly 7 years ago, and since in The Millionaire Next Door they show pretty clearly that ...
