Re: Eat for 21 dollars a week

Sure, you could live off of cheap fat, sugar, and trace proteins.......but that's no way to live.

Re: ERE Clothes

This sounds terrible.

I have plenty of hand me down or thrift shop clothing that has lasted 10+ years which cost 10% of these comparable items.

Re: 28 Days To Semi-ERE - Backpacking, Thru-Hiking, Van-Living & Shenanigans!

c_L, you hit the nail on the head. Being risk averse, and not really wanting to spend down my principal, it only makes sense. That being said, anyone with a <3.5% WR will likely end up with a LOT more money than they started with. Another strategy is to not adjust WR upwards for inflation every year...

Re: 28 Days To Semi-ERE - Backpacking, Thru-Hiking, Van-Living & Shenanigans!

Hi, bigato. I would certainly look to maintain the $500k watermark of initial asset levels in an inflation adjusted fashion. I hope to keep it growing ever so slightly above the level of inflation that erodes its purchasing power. Right now my liquid NW is ~$475k, so I still have a little ways to go...

Re: 28 Days To Semi-ERE - Backpacking, Thru-Hiking, Van-Living & Shenanigans!

@c_L, I'm looking forward to your countdown! A mere 16 work days left for me. Two more paychecks and then I get to practice living off of savings/investments for the foreseeable future. I think I should update my IPS with an ERE addendum. Right now it has a high level outline of investment strategy ...

Re: 29 Days To Semi-ERE - Backpacking, Thru-Hiking, Van-Living & Shenanigans!

Feels amazing to be back home in my own element. I enjoyed my trip but it was exhausting, especially having to be completely extroverted for 72 hours straight. Physically as well, with little exercise, a lot of food and libations, and little sleep. I got home ~2 AM, which also left me feeling less t...

Re: 32 Days To Semi-ERE - Backpacking, Thru-Hiking, Van-Living & Shenanigans!

Getting closer indeed! Working in beautiful Boulder Colorado, on a 75 degree day, poolside. This trip is a nice mix of R&R and work. And one of the aspects of my job that I truly enjoy. Went for a 5.4 mile run today, which kicked my ass at such a high elevation vs. running at sea level back home. Wa...

Re: 35 Days To Semi-ERE - Backpacking, Thru-Hiking, Van-Living & Shenanigans!

Things are chugging along in life and at work. Traveling a lot at the tail end of this long work stint. I haven't had more than 2 weeks off work in 7 years! Really looking forward to a decompression phase. The presidential tweet induced market volatility has been a good litmus test for asset allocat...

You can't sort someone's life out for them until they are truly ready for change, and often times that means hitting rock bottom......sometimes too late.

Re: classical_Liberal's Semi-ERE

I just reread your thread since the post on April 7th, and I want to encourage you to make those baby steps towards your semi-ERE goals. Even if you can't settle on the home base, knocking out some of those other things on the list (doctor, dentist, etc) can all slowly happen as you work through thi...

Here is a graph of rolling 12 month expenses vs. income @ 4% WR, since I began tracking these metrics in December of 2014.....

Hopefully these lines never have to cross again.

Morning Weight - 209.0 7 Day Average - 210.5 Training - Rest Today Continuing to experiment with intermittent fasting and liking the results. Re: bigato's journal

I put a high value on fresh air, even in my little basement apartment. We need to run a dehumidifier most of the time we are not home during the humid summer months, and tend to keep all windows open when it's drier/cooler out. Mold scares the crap out of me. Btw, I went back and reread your whole j...

Re: 46 Days To Semi-ERE - Backpacking, Thru-Hiking, Van-Living & Shenanigans!

Just dropping by with my usual plug for quitting your job. Soon you won't have anything to plug, as I'll be unemployed and on a plane Europe (43 days!). The $14-18k is just for me, and I agree it's a nice amount of money as long as you stretch the utility of each dollar. I can see myself enjoying l...

@jacob, I understand the concept and appreciate you laying it out like that.
