Re: 35 and hating latest career change to teaching. Sinking into depression
It sounds like its all so overwhelming for you ATM. I bet though that it will get easier over time and you will start to need to prepare less and less each time and the experience will be more normalised and less intense for you. But overall it doesnt sound like a happy long term solution for you. ...

Re: 35 and hating latest career change to teaching. Sinking into depression
@Thecoalminerswife, thanks for sharing your journey and well wishes. I will have to check if I can receive notifications via email, as I just went away and forgot this thread. I worked in a "good" school with a friendly and helpful staff but it was still EXTREMELY stressful. Six times a da...

Re: 35 and hating latest career change to teaching. Sinking into depression
That's true. I managed to stay for a year in a B2B tech content marketing company as my boss was visionary, compassionate and quirky. Wouldn't have been able to do so otherwise, to spend my days writing to heighten fears and induce spending. I heard that he has since changed though!!

Re: 35 and hating latest career change to teaching. Sinking into depression
You might find it useful to read "So good they can't ignore you" by Cal Newport. There's a study that shows that in general, the longer people work in their job/field, the happier they are. The more skilled you are in your job/field, the more control you also have - you can command the sa...

Re: 35 and hating latest career change to teaching. Sinking into depression
Not sure how reliable Tim Ferriss' methods are: I can hardly find a mention of his latest achievements in horseback archery. He sounds more like someone who..is quite like me! Just learn a little, and move on. Polyglots who speak multiple languages and who are honest about how much effort they inves...

Re: 35 and hating latest career change to teaching. Sinking into depression
Have you read any Tim Ferriss? His whole deal is applying the Pareto Principle to learning new skills and fields. Its analogous to Charlie Munger's suggestion to learn the 'Big Ideas' of every field to get a robust understanding of how the whole world works. The problem of applying this to making a...

Re: 35 and hating latest career change to teaching. Sinking into depression
I have a question, if you want to reach FI why don't you just get the highest paying job you can find? Because a high paying job will often wear your soul down faster than it will fill your wallet. Exactly... I really wish I love money, or maybe I'm not wishing hard enough. But the minute I'm taske...

Re: 35 and hating latest career change to teaching. Sinking into depression
Dear all, Thanks for the replies. I've been offline for a while as I had friends visiting. That brought some cheer for a while, especially since I took two days off work! What is your depression due to? Last time I had a depression episode, it lasted for a year, and went away when I went to a new co...

Re: 35 and hating latest career change to teaching. Sinking into depression
Hey thrifty++, I have come to realise that one's decisions are very particular to one's personality and lifegoals. e.g. I have a friend who has been here for over 10 years and is fiercely loyal to Adelaide. He came from a science background, and had to let go of his love for research when funding wa...

Re: 35 and hating latest career change to teaching. Sinking into depression
@FBeyer: That's a great graphic. It made me think of how I can really beat myself up at times, instead of practising the growth mindset and thinking that even if I don't know enough, I can just simply acknowledge the one thing I don't know and continue learning. What is your depression due to? Last ...

Re: 35 and hating latest career change to teaching. Sinking into depression
Hi all, Thank you for your replies. By the time I was going to respond, the boards were down for a couple of days, and then I’ve just been working. I wake up at around 6/7am, and after the day is done, I’m usually in bed by 9.30pm and don’t have time or energy to reply. @chenda – Having been a web e...

35 and hating latest career change to teaching. Sinking into depression
I'm turning 36 actually. Having gone through numerous jobs and having recently completed a two-year Masters of Teaching, I thought life would be stable now. But no. -------------------------------------- I've always liked playing around with words since young. At 15, I banded together with classmate...

Re: Hello, from a 34-yr-old bleeding heart
@George - I want to stick it out and see what the industry is really like for me. Also, I've already busted all the money. I might as well finish the last year and at least get a Masters...which I know the NGOs really fancy. So if I wanna return to NGO work, it'll help. @GandK - Is your name a take ...

Hello, from a 34-yr-old bleeding heart transitioning into early childhood teacher - things not getting better??
Hi there! I have always been following my passion blindly. I used to be a writer/editor, and would switch jobs nonstop once I got disappointed in the job/company/sector. So, I've been writing/editing for magazines, websites, in the publishing sector, for MNCs, and later for NGOs. Then I thought the ...
