Re: in which brute says things about libertarianism
I believe a recent RPF episode argued that capitalism CAN solve environmental problems because people can vote with their dollars. If people care about the earth, they will find a way to pay someone to do something about it. Same with people and surplus. I suppose one mild instance of this in action...

Re: Benjamin Klarman journal
Thanks for sharing your thoughts Benjamin. I would be interested to hear a little bit about your portfolio. It sounds like you have put a lot of thought into it. How much of it do you change from a year to year basis? Would you consider yourself a day trader?

Re: Demosthenes Journal Take 2
Phew, that first month off sure went fast. It's amazing how fast time goes by when you aren't looking at the clock every 10 seconds at your boring office job. I didn't get much done at home up until the last week or so when I decided to get my ass in gear. I quit my youtube habit (for the 3rd time) ...

Re: Turning a bike repair hobby into a full time business
@DutchGirl Interesting insight. For the most part bike shops are scattered fairly randomly throughout the city I live in. Most of my customers need 2-3 bikes tuned up so it makes more sense for me to go to them. The logistics of putting 3 bikes in the car to get to the shop doesn't always work... I ...

Turning a bike repair hobby into a full time business
There has been lots of talk on the forums about making some side income by fixing up bikes. About a year ago, I decided to make a go of it. I set up a Facebook page advertising mobile mechanical service for any job. From June 2017 to April 2018 I gave away lots of free repairs in return for reviews ...

Re: Demosthenes Journal Take 2
Freedom! My last day was Thursday. The Stockholm syndrome was nearly kicking in. Some of my co-workers didn't agree/understand that I was staying home with the kid. Others were just smiling and nodding. Some part of me during the last week was thinking "wow they are right, what am I giving up h...

@Colibri if you're coming to Ottawa we should do a quick get-together. I live right by the airport. It sounds like you need to waste a bit of time in Ottawa anyway.

Re: Incompatibility between drinking and ERE
$245 per year, super cheap, definitely ere. I'm sure it's possible to brew in a cheaper manner than my first attempts in 2015. There's definitely a learning curve though and many of my first batches were dumpers. I think the reason I'm getting so much push back here is the same reason why I stuck i...

Re: Incompatibility between drinking and ERE
@seppia I used to drink about 10 beers a week or 43 beers a month. If you divide it out it's about $2 per beer. That's pretty cheap for micro brew quality beer in canada. @DSKla You certainly can brew some pretty cheap beers if you are cost conscious, but there's a fair amount of opportunity cost in...

Re: Incompatibility between drinking and ERE
@2birds1stone That's quite impressive! I've been away from the drinking social circles for years now so I suppose I've forgotten how groups like these can fit into your web of goals. I have a hard time justifying any entertainment budget for my own life as I've identified that it gives me very littl...

Re: Incompatibility between drinking and ERE
I suppose I should have stressed that I'm primarily speaking about the Extreme side of ERE. Lots of people on here can retire early and still imbibe on occasion, or even often. It's another beast entirely to ERE within a handful of years while also including drinking as part of your plan. I totally ...

Re: Incompatibility between drinking and ERE
@ffj I used to drink a beer a day and a couple on the weekends, but I quit a couple weeks ago. @theanimal Selling your alcohol is prohibited in many places, so it is difficult to turn the hobby into something that is zero cost/profitable. I considered the possibility of selling wort (unfermented bee...

Re: Incompatibility between drinking and ERE
Consider however the web of goals concept. How would drinking benefit your web of goals? You could argue that drinking increases sociability with your friends. It's difficult to place this "get drunk with your friends" on your web of goals though.

Incompatibility between drinking and ERE
I've been a beer home brewer for 4 years, and on here since 2015. For some reason it never hit me as to how much drinking affects your finances even if you brew your drinks yourself. I'll break down my homebrewing expenses over time: 2015: Equipment: $970 Ingredients: $1199 2016 (January to March): ...

Re: Demosthenes Journal Take 2
T-21 days until my work leave begins! It has been a pretty transformative feeling knowing that my life is going to change drastically soon. It seems crazy to me that having a kid feels like a smaller life change than taking 7 years off of work. Perhaps children change your life more over time, where...

Added as well. There were some concerns earlier in the thread that your google account would be linked to your pin. I see no evidence of this however.

Maybe we could combine forces with MMM forumites. There are a fair number of them kicking around according to this map (whether or not they are active is another story)..

Re: Montreal Meetup - September 15
This topic is hilarious! Doesn't sound like there's enough of a following to get an event going, but I'm glad there's like minded folks nearby.
I'm in Ottawa and might be able to make it out if we get something together.

Re: What Percentage of Expenses should go to Rent?
Nitpicking ... think of being #wealthy guidelines as spending 1/3 of being #consumer guidelines. So 10% instead of 30%. @Jacob Interesting how your ERE performance metrics have changed over time. In 2016 it was 15% and now it's 10%. Why the change? I suppose half of consumer guidelines wasn't extre...

Wow thank you for all of your posts. Your stories are very helpful. I will have to ponder how to convert this into quantitative values.
