Re: SWB's path to financial independence

So I left after realizing this thread was going to go off tangent. I haven't read the replies since my last post. I will come back and do so at some point. However I wanted to give an update: - I bought a boat (~$300k, needs another $20k immediately and maybe another $15-20k over this year for some ...

Re: SWB's path to financial independence

I appreciate all the replies and thoughts. I'm obviously struggling with something that I have two very different viewpoints on (locking in being done versus being right about my investment option). I agree there is a way to satisfy both needs by selling the majority and retaining some AMD. I'm stil...

Re: SWB's path to financial independence

This is from one of my drafts yesterday when I tried to write about hitting goal: Growth/value-wise, I think AMD still has immense opportunities that will increase their value as a company. That said, the stock market plays AMD in ways that are very confusing. I think it's a very popular stock for d...

Re: SWB's path to financial independence

@thedollar Yeah, it's a uh... A bit too exciting although I've become used to it for the most part. My portfolio is basically: 62.5% AMD stock 15.5% AMD options - all LEAPs but I think I'm roughly breaking even on LEAPs with some very red (due to buying at or near peak) and others very green (due to...

Re: SWB's path to financial independence

Progress: 102% ($1,631,000 / $1,600,000) We hit our goal number abruptly due to AMD going up in value. I'm taking the long weekend (Monday is a holiday in the USA) to think it all over. Work-wise, I'm not planning on stopping immediately as everything moves a bit slower with a family with planned ho...

If you go back as an older student in STEM, you will also qualify for a number of grants*. Also if you're old enough, your parents finances will no longer be part of your financial aid application which may help you too. I did two years at a (good) community college (no degree, just focused on trans...

Re: SWB's path to financial independence

Progress: 71.8% ($1,150,000 / $1,600,000) Investments down a bit plus taxes took a bigger chunk than expected (I forgot I rebalanced some long held brokerage investments at the beginning of the tax year). I decided to keep up with quarterly tax payments this year so that was another chunk too as the...

Re: SWB's path to financial independence

I slacked this year and didn't do the quarterly estimated tax payments (to federal and state). I wanted the flexibility of holding cash although didn't end up taking advantage of it. So taxes just took a big bite and I went ahead and also paid the 2023 Q1 estimated taxes. So for 2023, I'm going to j...

Re: the animal's journal

I've done that head gaskets job before on a Subaru. It was a lot of work but it's definitely doable. The high price for the job reflects the number of wrenching hours so it's a solid win for DIY if you are comfortable taking it on. I do think we bought one or two special tools and you'll definitely ...

Re: How Much is Remote Work Worth to You?

@theanimal the problem I have with that though is that most of the experiences at corporations have a layer of separation that dulls the experience compared to those outside of a corporate business. By that I mean I don't think you really see the true person when they are at work at least in most co...

Re: How Much is Remote Work Worth to You?

I'm not willing to go back to an office at this point. It's actually a struggle to work from home because we have 3 young boys who are also being homeschooled here and we live in a relatively compact 3 bedroom apartment. I end up shifting my sleep schedule later so I can work into the evening which ...

Re: SWB's path to financial independence

Progress I've been thinking about this for a while. At one point, we reached a high of ~90% of goal. I realized, after the fact and we had dropped down quite a bit, that if I had sold at that point and held cash the end goal was in hand within a couple years of working. I'm nearing that point again...

Re: SWB's path to financial independence

I herniated a disc in my lower back. It was a huge ordeal. I ended up having surgery (discectomy) which went well. That was a bit more than 10 years ago. Maybe I'm wrong but I kind of think a discectomy, while done with great technique and high tech equipment, is a kind of "hope for the best&qu...

Oh, and the foreclosure auction was cancelled. I don't think it's going to get relisted. That was both a sigh of relief and a little bit of sadness.

Re: SWB's path to financial independence

A couple of months ago, my wife decided she wanted an exercise bike. I feel bad I didn't think of suggesting it to her earlier as pre-COVID she was very into spin classes as a workout regime. Since COVID, we've had another baby and pretty much lived in a bubble. So no spin classes. Anyway, long stor...

@Sclass Might be interesting to try annealing the 3d print? It is supposed to shrink a bit so have to factor that in. I fiddle with it briefly with boiling water but didn't end up trying anything with it.

Re: SWB's path to financial independence

Crisis averted with the business partner. Thankfully, just a bunch of miscommunication and some frustration at one point that was not ideally vented. On the housing front, I'm going to go to another foreclosure auction assuming the house actually makes it to auction. I went to one in the past but di...
