Re: SWB's path to financial independence

Today we reached the $1,200,000 goal with investments going up and a contract payment clearing. But I'm not yet done. The $1,200,000 goal is basically being safe in the sense that if we were careful with spending (and were on ACA/subsidized health insurance), we would be able to live off of our inve...

Re: Dave's Journal - documenting the path to FI

I enjoyed reading about your value-based investing. I'm guessing that finding such companies is based on long term effort (as you've mentioned above) but is anything else helpful in getting started? Are stock screeners of any use? I'd enjoy reading more about your techniques. Oh, and I came back to ...

Re: Is Software Development/ Programming Oversaturated?

@zbigi Ah, yeah, I was thinking more of the startup industry with the hustle stuff where I think that is more desired. I personally don't like the hustle stuff too much just because it ends up being tiring if you have to work with people who hustled in but aren't actually qualified -- I'm fine with ...

Progress: 92.4% ($1,109,000 / $1,200,000)

- stock market took a bit of a dump as did AMD/XLNX
- paid quarterly taxes

Re: SWB's path to financial independence

@zbigi The interview prep is a bear. I'm somewhat tempted to try the interview cycle with F in FAANG just to get the experience (I did interview with them once a long time ago while in the San Francisco Bay Area). I don't know what they would offer me. I think they are doing tiered offers based on r...

Re: Is Software Development/ Programming Oversaturated?

@zbigi Open source is highly variable. I have lead the open source project for a programming module that has about 2M downloads so it's fairly popular (but people use it in builds so CI things are probably increasing that number). I didn't get a whole lot of professional benefit out of that work. I ...

Re: SWB's path to financial independence

I am now fully accepting the realization that I can no longer work at a startup as an employee. When working in startups, I need to either be a contractor or a (co)founder. I think the remaining options are: - contract (doing that right now) - doing my own startups (doing that right now) - work for ...

Re: DIY Dishwasher Detergent?

@HB Did you end up trying making your own solution? If so, how did it go (and if good, which recipe)? I've been thinking about having a dishwasher. We're renting and one came with it. Our prior rental came with one too. I mostly likely because of everything around washing the dishes. I still have to...

Re: Is Software Development/ Programming Oversaturated?

@TopHatFox One way in is hustle. Build something kind of cool using GIS or whatever it is you're interested in. Does not need to be practical but I would hit these points (but I'm taking a wild guess at what you're going for, you'll have to adjust): - ship it (so something actually published and usa...

Re: Is Software Development/ Programming Oversaturated?

My take is no (on it being too much of a bubble to get into). Not by a long shot. Tech still requires a significant grind to make it long term. I'm genuinely interested in tech and I think that has helped me with that grind but I find it tiring due to all the things that get in the way of building a...

Re: What’s the magic number needed?

I guess my main question is why 60? If you're 35, that gives you 25 years to accumulate and work. But do you and/or your partner want to work for 25 years? Because it is two of you, it gets a little tricky if you've combined finances. For some couples with separate finances, apparently one will reti...

Re: Fixit Log

I bought a tension meter but I ended up selling it because plucking the spokes was easier. Go to the opposite side of the rim where the wheel is still true. Now pluck the spokes on each side of the rim (they might be same tension on each side but odds are one side is different tension from the other...

Re: A Journey of Mindfulness--the Remaking of Life in Midstream.

I didn't know they had an official app with an obstruction checker built into it. That looks much better than the other options I mentioned above. I'm happy to have this for when we go look at land. Android: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.starlink.mobile&hl=en_US&gl=US iOS...

Re: Fixit Log

I was surprised to learn, in passing in a video, that there are still American-made clothes washers. There is Staber which seems hard to actually find a place selling one and it's made for the handy owner who prefers to repair it themselves and does not mind working around its quirks (well, I conclu...

Re: SWB's path to financial independence

Picked up a used small exercise bike thing locally for $20. It's the type without a front handle bar that collapses into a relatively small rectangle. I've got a sit-stand desk that I usually don't adjust from sit so raised that up a bit and I'm pedaling while typing. I wanted to try this for some t...

Re: SWB's path to financial independence

@Sclass That makes a lot of sense to me. Thanks for sharing your take on it. I'm in the midst of it so I'll hold off on writing more to see how it shakes out. That said, it's been informative to me in that I realized another potential way of marketing my background that might be a good lead to well ...

Re: Garden Log

Do you let some of your crop go to seed and harvest the seeds for planting next year? We switched spots at our community garden to a bigger one and the prior person abandoned their plot towards the end of the season. We took some of the rotten tomatoes and planted the seeds in soil and grew some tom...

Progress: 95% ($1,139,500 of $1,200,000) minus some self-employment taxes (quarterly taxes due Sept 15)

Bunch of gains from investments (AMD/XLNX, some mutual funds and few other stocks).

Re: Fixit Log

@wb Another way is to take two zip ties and put them on either side and cut them to match for rough indicators. Then pluck the spokes to get a rough feel for which are too tight and which are too loose in that area. You can definitely tell by sound. Too tight will be higher pitched (and harder to pl...

This might not be what you're looking for at all (more time on computer instead of playing with people directly) but there is another option which is Tabletop Simulator ( on Steam but also a Steam key is onsale at Humble for $10 ). It's been a little controversial in that the developer/studio has a ...
