Re: Portfolio for next US recession/dollar devaluation

I pick several different asset classes that are unlikely to collapse at the same time. Ray Dalio said if no one on his staff could find a potential flaw with a particular investment, they didn't invest in it. The asset you love the most is the one you should hedge.

Re: Jordan Peterson

Roberts touched on some of the crossovers between JBP's and JLF's ideas and helped me see why JBP appeals to some forumites. Which JLF ideas, specifically? There are threads of stoicism in that talk. "Fix yourself before fixing others" reminded me of living in accordance with nature. And "aim high ...

Re: Guns in America

The public isn't educated because the narrative of identity politics makes for increased voter rolls. Agreed. Partisanship is horseshit. Why should my opinion on gun laws have anything to do with my opinion on climate change, healthcare, or progressive tax rates? Stopping the press from sensational...

Re: Guns in America

The reason for the focus on rifles vs. handguns is not just because of the race of the victims. I think its because of the arbitrariness of the victims. In a targeted handgun homicide, there is a tendency to blame the victim a little bit. They lived in the wrong neighborhood, with the wrong crowd, m...

Re: Guns in America

Gun laws are a red herring, the issue here is the mental health of the individual who takes it upon themselves to arm themselves, legal or otherwise and turn the weapon on innocent citizens. What makes a person reach crisis point and turn on their own community? Quite likely it's feelings of worthl...

Re: Guns in America

Why exactly are we ignoring the swiss and israelis and focusing on the australians and british? The Israelis require every able bodied young adult to serve at least two years in the military. Which would ensure proper training with firearms. Reminds me of Robert Heinlein. In Starship Troopers, anyo...

Re: A brief discussion of abortion

birth control(where, if I understand correctly a fertilized egg/growing whatever is discarded during mensuration) Women on hormonal birth control don't ovulate. No egg, no fertilization. However, in women who are not on the pill, there is an uncountable but probably large fraction of fertilized egg...

Re: Jordan Peterson

@fiby41 If I'm following you, you're saying that "Hinduism" as westerners understand it, is not actually one religion, but lots of them? And that Christianity is more strict about dogma? I'm still vacillating between thinking Peterson is brilliant and on to something vs. that he's "not even wrong." ...

Re: Guns in America

@Brute No idea. Like Riggerjack said, the books are cooked on both sides and every study on this has an agenda. Which makes it impossible to make clear cause and effect statements. There are conflicting opinions on whether or not the Australian effort "worked" or the effect was statistical noise. Th...

Re: A brief discussion of abortion

I'm not saying biologists have a "super clear cut non-arbitrary" answer to the morality of abortion. I think that the answer to that depends on your answer to *why* its wrong to kill any human being. Your answer to that will probably go a long way to figuring out whether there is a difference betwee...

Re: Guns in America

there have been no proposals of gun legislation that would actually prevent many of these active shooter scenarios. You cannot be a solitary shooter at your club because when your FAC exam comes up two years in, the authorities come to your club and interview multiple members of the club about how ...

Re: A brief discussion of abortion

- everybody agrees that before conception, there is no life I don't agree. Conception, or fertilization, is the fusion of two *living* cells. Both descended from other living cells, and on and on going back ~4 billion years. There are no non-living intermediate stages. I assume when people are conc...

Re: Guns in America

@ffj, jennypenny, IlliniDave I agree that it's inarguably a good thing when the government fears it's population a little. And, since jennypenny brought up Jordan Peterson, there's a chaos and Order situation worth considering. Chaos in the form of armed civilians keeps the government from overreach...

Thanks jp for rescuing the thread. I accidentally hijacked it with the biblical morality discussion, and I think JBP has other interesting things to say. Re:Mass Murderer Mass Media. Re: Guns in America

right. so citizens should have rights to even more guns. brute is just confused as to why "not enough firepower no matter what" is an argument against any firepower. If the justification for gun ownership is "in case the Government comes for me", I'm saying that gun ownership will not protect you i...

Re: Jordan Peterson

@James, if it's not obvious, I'm not 100% on board with Jordan Peterson's philosophy. I am partly defending my understanding of it so others here can help me take it apart. I think the monogamy argument makes sense if it's a "rule" (in scare-quotes) that's only loosely followed. I mean, I think JBP ...

Re: Guns in America

@Tyler9000 I think it's significant that guns are tools designed specifically for killing, while vehicles and cooking implements are not. I think cigarettes are a better analogy here since there's no other redeeming quality about them. Although people used that argument to make recreational drug use...

Re: Guns in America

@brute
If you have one tomahawk missile, then the government owns thousands of them, plus some MOABs, bunker busters, long range armed drones and an army of young RiggerJacks behind them. All paid for with your tax dollars. You're back where we started.

Re: Guns in America

@jennypenny The Responsible Drinker analogy is a good one, and I'll think about it. What's the Pro-Gun side's view of how to approach this "looming mental health crisis?" Also, what did you teach your kids about active shooter situations? @Riggerjack I'm compelled to reiterate that I'm not a "gun gr...

Re: Guns in America

You should consider reading point and counter-point to everything you assume you believe, I do this to a fault. Its one of my most annoying qualities. I think it comes off as trolling when I play devil's advocate, but I'm really just trying to figure out IF I'm right or WHY I'm wrong. If you are in...

@ffj My only point in bringing up Randy Weaver is that there is no realistic amount of firepower you could purchase to protect you from the federal government, if they really wanted to get to you. However, if I'm following your logic trail correctly, you are saying that an armed populace is a main b...

@James_0011 There is an underlying assumption in that argument; that we know all we need to know about this subject. The liberal/progressive view is " try new stuff, we can make the system better. We know so much more now! " The conservative view is "there are unknown unknowns and unintended consequ...

Re: Guns in America

@slowtraveler How often does a gun-wielding vigilante hero take down a mass shooter? Are there real statistics on this? My current view is that this is a partisan talking point with no basis in reality. But I agree that the likely outcome of a sudden ban on civilian gun ownership would be a catastro...

that beings are divine is 1 obvious 2 a Christian concept. This is not what I was taught in sermons we were forced to attend. We were taught that we are born sinners, the Original Sin, how we need to ask JC/Father for forgiveness. Scriptures were quoted so the preacher must not be making that up. I...

Guns in America

So, there was another school shooting. I expect both political parties will proceed to execute the usual PR programs and change nothing. No other country has a recurring mass shooting problem like the US. Democrats say its because of our weak gun laws. Republicans say...I'm not really clear on their...
