Re: Gus' road to retirement

How much do your kids listen to you vs their peer group? It's one thing to hear it from you, it's another to hear it from other people they respect. It's possible to respect one's parents. Allegedly. Good point about the importance of peer groups. I'd say that's more important than religion. Compar...

Re: Operation Bail The Parents Out Planning

+1 Campitor Sounds cold AF when you put it that way, but the bottom line is that [your] resources are finite. And you have to choose between paying for your own non-working years or your parents'. No one is entitled to decades of labor-free leisure before dying. We only think otherwise because we li...

Re: Suomalaisen Päiväkirja

I imagine in the east the IxxP's focused on the Buddhist school and the ExxJ's focused on the Confucian school? Buddhism is probably attractive to many INxx's in America since ESxx's dominate the culture, it seems. Agreed. Philosophy, like all advice, is context and person specific. Some people nee...

Re: Suomalaisen Päiväkirja

This kind of thinking is narrow. There is no single evolutionary purpose for any part of our ecology (even brains). You're right. Everything we say is an oversimplification of reality. It's even an oversimplification of the speaker's understanding of it. The Tao that can be named is not the Tao. Ch...

Re: Suomalaisen Päiväkirja

And speaking of the self as an illusion, ... I've had these experiences, too. Sometimes I try to summon that feeling of Oneness and Awe by thinking about the Gaia hypothesis, or how small we are in the universe or whatever. But it doesnt often work. IOW, I can intellectually understand the Illusion...

Re: Suomalaisen Päiväkirja

So, you want 'selective' elimination of cravings, right? Some cravings are useful and desirable, but others are not? I agree. But I dont see that as consistent with buddhism. 1)all life has suffering, 2)the source of all suffering is wanting, 3)the way to end suffering is to stop wanting,4)this path...

Re: Book Review: Why Buddhism is True

Liberation from the craving to capture pleasant feelings and escape unpleasant feelings, liberation from the persistent desire for things to be different than they are. I've always had trouble with this part of Buddhism. If you successfully eliminated tanha/craving/attachment, you would never do an...

Re: Personality Test

@daylen Good summary of the interaction styles. How would you summarize the temperaments? I'm referring to this: https://youtu.be/5ASWxOXmF1M Clarice recommended it, in what I just realized is a different thread. If you have any interest in the subject type into youtube, "C. S. Joseph". Th...

Re: ERE vs Minimalism

I remember reading an article titled something like "Is Minimalism Only for the Rich?" and thinking how insane just the title was. https://forum.earlyretirementextreme.com/viewtopic.php?t=9806 The concept is legit. If you're poor and broke and trying to scrape by with all the meager means...

Re: Personality Test

Historically, these concepts have come from Sigmund Freud and Carl Jung. How did they come up with that? I don't know. His ass and mythology, respectively. How useful have you found this 4x4 grid approach? I've been reading about the 4 temperments and I cant connect what's written to actual people ...

Re: ERE vs Minimalism

Evangelical minimalism is not about converting consumers. It's about being holier than thou. "My preferences make me better than you." I'm a minimalist because I hate losing and breaking stuff. My solution is to have less stuff. When I lose or break something, I imagine all the hours i spe...

Re: Limit your choices

@cL
Its concievable that the reason too many choices stresses us out, is because we are subconsciously aware of the secretary problem.

@daylen
I mostly agree with that. Particularly the part about confidence requiring a delusion. Or at least a [willfull] ignorance of all the things you dont know.

Re: Personality Test

@Clarice Yeah, I saw the C.S. Joseph video with the 4x4 grid, at your suggestion. It certainly makes typing someone seem easier. But he loses me when he says that an INTJ "automatically" has ENTP unconscious and ESFP subconscious and SE inferior insecurities....... and that this scheme is ...

Re: Limit your choices

If too many choices lead to analysis paralysis and/or eventual dissatisfaction with choices made, then isn't optionality a huge contributor to the problem? If that is the case, then how does one reduce optionality, but maintain reduced fragility? More options is Objectively better, but Subjectively...

Re: Personality Test

I am INTP and DW is ISFJ. We hit it off being both introverted and shy, lol, but we definitely have some personality conflicts. I'm an INTJ, and I always avoided dating other introverts. Seems like it would make both people progressively more antisocial. Extroverted girlfriends would always force m...

Re: Limit your choices

This thread went the opposite direction of what I envisioned lol. I see freedom and satisfaction through commitment as Fiby41 mentioned, not through reducing commitments. That's because different people have different concerns, values, and priorities. Some people seek to minimize commitment so as t...

Re: Limit your choices

I don't think of manic energy as being akin to "will-power", because when you are manic you can't not do it. Good insight. Mania is a compulsion to Do, Depression is a compulsion to Not Do. Stimulant users have a compulsion to Do, and addiction to them is a constant battle to Not Do. Vari...

Re: Limit your choices

Since there is no such thing as pure will-power, limiting your choices really amounts to ... ... your environment so that better decision making is the default. Is this true though? I think both components are real; situational psychology and will power. I can sense differences in my own willpower ...

https://fhww.files.wordpress.com/2018/07/06-tim-ferriss-6-formulas-for-more-output-and-less-overwhelm.pdf Posting this again because its relevant.
