Re: Does one owe it to their parents to take care of them in old age?

Nobody really means "is there anything I can do." They just think its the right thing to say. I would bet your family is also torn between guilt and selfishness just like you are. But they also have gratefulness that they have you to deal with all the hard stuff. So they can justify to themselves th...

Three of the top ten breast stroke swimmers in the US Olympic team last year had this. It prompted speculation that it gives them a competitive advantage.

Re: Synthesizing Optimal Solutions

It seems to me from http://forum.earlyretirementextreme.com/viewtopic.php?t=3509 that ERE is about synthesizing optimal solutions based on personal preferences and a broad skill base. Maybe, but that's not what I got out of that link. I read that as "ERE = stoic renaissance man who has multiple sol...

Re: How does the permanent portfolio survive a hyperinflation scenario ?

Frosti85, are you concerned that, if hyperinflation occurs, you will keep selling gold and buying trillion dollar bills until they dismantle the Treasury? That's how I'm reading your OP. There is a continuum between passive investing and active investing. Some people in the crisis you are describing...

Re: How does the permanent portfolio survive a hyperinflation scenario ?

Probably better than anything else except 100% gold and/or maybe being invested in another country/currency. I'd imagine in most cases of hyperinflation, you'd see the writing on the wall and be very reluctant to rebalance into cash.

Re: The full peanut butter

Neither link working for me, either. Why is it that real estate seems to be such a consistent path for wealth? Is it just about the leverage and tax opportunities? Or is it that we had a century long housing bubble and I missed out? I have my own issues with Robert Kiyosaki. The main one's are his w...

Re: Responsibility for Parents

Update: I caved and sent them a couple grand. But no commitment for ongoing payments. They got more than they were anticipating for the house, and my dad called and asked for enough to cover them until the payout. My brother offered to look into helping them get out of the car lease, but they aren't...

Re: Umbrella insurance

First, I don't yet have umbrella insurance. I intermittently shop around for it, and decide to hold off. Some advice I got (possibly on this forum?) was to compare three separate companies at most. Beyond that you're less likely to find any significant price/coverage differences worth the pain-in-th...

Re: Responsibility for Parents

@7, No reading is required to recognize this as a "complex problem". And its not entirely clear that there is a "right" thing to do. I can only guess at the potential outcomes. @Sclass, Its weird that I used to think of my mom as the mature, responsible one. I can't explain how that idea persisted i...

Re: How Libertarian Are You?

Methinks an ideal (ha!) society would operate more like an eco-system of different governing forms ... at all scales. The more diverse [in terms of systems] the better. So, feudalism? I think its best to consider markets and governments as parts of a spectrum of human group behavior. Theft and exto...

Re: Trump - Clown Genius

@Chad SlateStarCodex just did an article on this. One conclusion the data seems to support is that extreme 'base-pandering' candidates do worse by alienating their own party's moderates and, moreso, by encouraging turnout in the opposing party. Trump's fluke win is a sign of a trend toward increasin...

Re: How Libertarian Are You?

@scriptbunny Governments are needed for regulations, yes. That's a primary function. But the 'basic needs' you listed (food, housing, healthcare) have to be produced by someone. Who will compel them to produce if they could get paid better doing something else? Or paid the same doing nothing at all?...

Re: Responsibility for Parents

Ok. This sounds like a wild emotional roller coaster ride. On one hand mom says she'll tear up any checks you send and on the other she asks for money. She only said that after I started suggesting they couldn't afford the two bedroom and extra car. But, yes, she is irrational and manipulative. Lik...

Re: Trump - Clown Genius

I'd argue intelligence is necessary but not sufficient for the job of potus. And a president's success or quality or whatever should be measured by how well his intentional actions further the common interests of his people. A non-partisan capitalist with no dependence on special interests had a bla...

Re: Want to fight climate change? Have fewer children

7 billion people. Eventually, we will either cause an extinction event, or we will harness our fecundity. There are no other options. There is a third option. We will reach an ecological barrier and our population will shrink down to some equilibrium level. 7 billion humans are like an algal bloom....

Re: How Libertarian Are You?

I think that relegating the concept of private property to a smaller material scale and allowing the concept of stewardship more prominence at a larger scale is fitting. I am generally unconvinced that private property rights are worth enforcing beyond those that ensure that individuals have access...

Re: How Libertarian Are You?

+1 to IlliniDave's pragmatism. I'm in favor of the system that works for the most people. Property rights are a useful concept. As are a *carefully chosen* set of rules to define them. No one will farm a plot of land if they know armed bandits can steal their harvest. Maybe the bandits worked just a...

cosmopolitan sophistication vs. intelligence. What's the difference? Vocabulary? Defining intelligence will derail the thread. Suffice it to say, you get a sense of someone's "smartness" from listening to them talk for a while. Sometimes you get it wrong. There's well-read pseudointellectuals who do...

None of your hypotheticals, Jacob, would be necessary to arm Clinton's political opponents. She probably had Saudi Arabian and Ukranian money funding her campaign. The Clinton Foundation would be under investigation. Benghazi and her email server would still be in the news. I'm not claiming absence ...

Re: Want to fight climate change? Have fewer children

Suppose that article convinces so many westerners that it prevents twenty thousand more children from being born. That means there are twenty thousand more people-resources available on the market than there would have been. They will still be used up by the remaining humans, and 58.6 tonnes of CO2e...
