Re: Questions concerning "the overhead pound"

I like the concept a whole lot more than the usual measures of fitness, like one rep max or percentage of bodyweight with respect to one rep max. Gives me a good baseline to measure my progress against what would be considered "elite" for simple and available exercises like pushups and pullups. At ...

Questions concerning "the overhead pound"

Greetings,

I don't post much, but I do reread the Early Retirement Extreme book every year or two, and something jumped out at me this time.

I was reading through the health and fitness section and a concept that I had never given much thought to or heard of was introduced, the "overhead pound ...

Re: Ultimate nutritious, easy to make, easy to package, inexpensive everyday meal?

The most nutritious, easy to carry complete meal is pemmican. The hardest part about making it is cutting the meat into jerky. If you know how to turn a crockpot on low, you know how to render fat. 1 lb of it equals 3000 calories if you go by the half rendered fat half pulverized powdered meat ...

Re: Why does society cater to people with kids and shun those without?

Society caters to people with kids because kids become the new society. A society that doesn't replenish itself will cease to be so. Likewise, a culture that encourages progeny will, over time, snuff out a culture that does not.

On top of all this, Social security and Medicare are basically large ...

Re: Best method to sharpen a knife?

I second what Bluenote said. For the most part, steel is only as good at the heat treatment or tempering process. Most inexpensive stainless steel knives are garbage for serious cutting chores.

As a meat eater, I stick with knives that have a scandinavian grind or a high flat grind and are made of ...

Re: Getting strong on the cheap (for folks with a home gym)

I would get rid of the kettle bells, except I have been unable to identify good exercises for the range of back muscles and biceps, using just bodyweight. When weather is nicer I can use trees and jungle gyms for pullups, but still requires more than simply floor space and my body. I know some ...

Re: Getting strong on the cheap (for folks with a home gym)

It's funny, I do the same thing. Bang out a set of 5 on the weighted chin or dip, then do something else for 3-5 minutes and go back and do it again.

That sounds like a great setup. As an apartment dweller without to means to haul around a weight setup, the pullupbar/dip station is about all I can ...

Getting strong on the cheap (for folks with a home gym)

For everyone who does some form of strength training, what does your home gym setup look like?

I use a set of chest expanders with homemade bands as a sort of travel sized dumbbell, along with a portable pull up bar and dip station. As far as "weights" I just use a backpack full of small sandbags ...

Re: Folding Bike?

6 month update : The dahon S1 folding bike is working well. My only complaint is that the handle bar jiggles side to side and there seems to be no good way to tighten the otherwise cheaply built handlepost lock.

Although I thought I wanted a folding bike like the Dahon, I might just get the ...

Re: Fitbit One and Withings scale

Electronic devices to measure BF% are worthless. They are easily fooled by water retention, which can swing ten pounds in either direction for some people.
The best ERE tools for measuring body fat percentage are this :

1) A mirror
2) A bathroom scale
3) A tape measure (I use the notches on my ...

Re: Folding Bike?

@Hannibal -

I had one almost exactly like that (with the fenders and handbrake taken off) and I'm same size as you. Earlier version by the looks of it.

I wish I hadn't sold it too!
. . .

Thanks for the very detailed reply. I went ahead and ordered it, currently waiting for it to be shipped ...

Re: Folding Bike?

I didn't want to post a new thread just about this folding bike I'm looking at.

It's a Dahon Boardwalk folding bike. I found a used one for sale for $200.
