Re: COVID topic vol 2

Jacob's NNT/NNH summary is in essence what matters here. In almost all situations vaccine >>>>>>>>> COVID infection in terms of which to pick. The UK decision to avoid AZ in the <30s is reasonable as for that group 1) COVID is normally mild and 2) there is no need as there are alternatives sufficien...

Re: Lemon's Journal

Interesting year. I am wealthier, fitter, and more skilled with plenty of new war stories. Despite this I still can't call it a good year. Despite being an internally motivated introvert with a job that requires lots of in person activity the lack of human interaction and community is starting to ge...

Re: COVID topic vol 2

Are 60% of frontline healthcare workers evil? Are they stupid? Brainwashed by social media? Selfish? Uncaring? Care home staff =/= all healthcare worker groups. Approximately 0% of my doctor and nursing colleagues have refused the vaccine. We have had a few admin staff decline. But I will say those...

Re: COVID topic vol 2

Had my first dose of the vaccine. Nice that this could be the beginning of the end. @nomad. There are multiple issues with that thread. Especially on Lombardy. You change the behaviour you obviously change the outcome. Lots of places got close. Ventilators? Yeah overestimated the need. Fun fact, IF ...

@chenda and @jacob If the powers that be, back in March, put out the message: Please don't purchase/hoard medical grade PPE because we need it for our medical professionals who are saving your lives, instead here's a guide to make your own face covering which is effective to reduce droplet exposure...

yes! when doctors visited homes (another place/ another time) they’d carry bags just like that.
Or to be honest these days. I have colleagues with very similar bags in terms of appearance. The difference is they are all sufficiently reinforced and lockable to comply with control drug laws.

Re: COVID topic vol 2

Pulse oximeters are notoriously inaccurate for monitoring purposes. Everything has to be just right to get accurate readings, inexperienced users and products that do not display waveforms increases inaccurate usage 100fold. In the hospital setting (in modern hospitals in the US anyway), they are n...

Re: COVID topic vol 2

@7w5 The main issue is how clean nails are/ they need to not be painted. Or a weak pulse/user error. Your experiences wrt %ages it pretty much what you expect given the O2 dissociation curve. In terms of brand we use all sorts of types, but get them annually calibrated which is the main thing. We al...

Re: COVID topic vol 2

@tony Not sure that is fair. They have said 'we are following the science' because in general they have been trying to. The includes trying to factor in value judgements/health/economy/everything else. They haven't got it perfect, but I don't think given basically no one this time last year would ha...

Re: COVID topic vol 2

@jennypenny Exactly. Unfortunately politicians like most humans also don't like it when all options are various flavours of bad. It makes policy very hard. I would also say individual actions are not a particularly good measure to assess the advice of public figures. Because individual and populatio...

Re: COVID topic vol 2

@nomadscientist That sort of thing has so many variables it is inevitably political, which is what politicians are for. There have been talks about trying to value these sorts of things, but it is essentially a new way of looking at this sort of problem, not surprising given it is pretty unprecedent...

Re: COVID topic vol 2

To my mind he answers these questions like any politician, starting from the very first answer*. More consequentially, his statement that mortality varies "slightly" with age is both false and grotesquely dishonest. *an independent scientist would've said something like "I'm fine, no...

Re: COVID topic vol 2

@Jenny it depends what you will do with a test results. Also I have no idea what the regulations WRT meeting, positive cases etc. are in the US full stop so not commenting on that. So positive test - pretty obvious. Negative test - reduces the likelihood of having COVID but not to zero. Mainly becau...

Re: COVID topic vol 2

@ego yes there have been concerns about procurement and affiliations of those in the system. Rapid tests are only good if sufficiently sensitive and specific. It also depends on the prevalence rate. But this concept along with positive predictive and negative predictive values is not something I thi...

Re: COVID topic vol 2

@Jacob There is certainly a non zero number of healthcare workers looking at quitting. There are always noises made about leaving in general and the surveys in the UK always give terrifying numbers like 1/3 of GPs thinking of leaving in 2-5 years. So far, that many haven't left. But COVID has focuss...

Re: COVID topic vol 2

The fact that a disease which can cause massive multi-system insult can also cause mental health issues in survivors isn't particularly surprising. Especially with the evolving chronicity. Post ICU syndrome has been a thing for a while and delirium in the ICU is pretty common along with general hosp...

Re: Protecting against dementia

@Hristo Botev In terms of pre post work exercise probably makes the lions share of the gains. Like with most things going from totally sedentary to even just regular walks get you most of the win. Sedentary to moderately active is going to have way more benefit than moderately active to ultra-marath...

Interesting development. Partner has always been wedded to London 'because job'. But, he has been working for home 95%+ of the time for the last 6 months now and doesn't want to go back to the office. In addition he has enjoyed the small amount of food we can grow on the balcony as vastly superior t...
