Re: Are you a Nomad or a Homesteader?
If you add up the cumulative miles I've relocated and put down a new residence, we're talking some 7000 miles. Conversely, the sum total of my parents' relocation is less than 100 miles. This also begets the question/observation that sometimes children do the exact opposite of their parents. In gen...

Re: Are you a Nomad or a Homesteader?
Agreed, I’ve felt like a misfit my entire life here. However, I would argue that younger generations are not as extroverted as the older ones, possibly due to growing up with phones and social media. I sound like my father now… Agree on younger gen seeming more introverted in so much as assuming be...

Re: How's that working out for you?
+10 to this (the first para that is. I'm rarely on here anymore to be qualified to do para 2 😆) It might not look it from my postings here but the best outcomes I've had (in quantifiable goal oriented terms as well as mental equanimity and joy) is when I've been able to pull my theoretical head out ...

Re: Ran Prieur Watch
in the West, the peasants were already a part of the capitalist system, paying the rent to the landlord, and the landlord didn't felt like he owed them anything. Whereas, in EE, the system was still largely feudal, with peasant being serfs, which meant the landlord would feel obliged to come to the...

Re: Ran Prieur Watch
Would not be surprised if mental health issues were correlated with spending time online (especially social media, online forums). For example, I'd say the ERE2 types would be more 'touched in the head' than the ERE1 types 😆 More information doesn't necessarily lead to more wisdom but often more neu...

Re: Are you a Nomad or a Homesteader?
Yes, Mediterranean countries are wonderful in that respect, and tropical countries are even more so. The more laid-back the country, the better. The challenge is that you have to compete with the stereotypical Latin lovers and outgoing Italians. It’s quite a tough league to be in… Also consider tha...

Thank you for posting. I quite enjoyed the audiobook narration and took away a few things to ponder over.
Been retired over 10 years now (am 50 now) and while finances have not been an issue, good use of time is increasingly valuable.

Re: Life is a Daring Adventure | The Inspiration Thread
On a less daring and adventurous note but a rich and highly enjoyable activity, I would highly recommend walking the Camino Primitivo before it gets too popular (which it might after Martin Sheen & Co release their follow up to the original movie : The Way). It starts in Oviedo Spain and takes y...

Re: Retirees, what do you do all day long?
I (now 50) have been retired (all income from investments only) for 10 years and have been location independent. The first 2-3 years were motorcycle touring and slow long car road trips across the country a few times (some camping but mostly motels/hotels). Read about house-sitting in 2015 and tried...

I am always inspired by Iohan and his spirit as a human being: https://youtu.be/Z0wAPztOO2U
He is (sorry was) one of the most inspiring content creators on YouTube I've seen. I'm sorry I never got to meet him in person.
I love all his videos.
RIP Iohan.

Re: Is migration our normal state as human beings?
Poor and migrating = bad (ie forced migration) Not poor and migrating = not too bad 🙂 Source: Self over 9 years of location independence including the year of Covid madness. However it is clear to me that majority of people are not psychologically equipped for a nomadic lifestyle....which is great b...

Re: Semi-retirement locations?
We were considering a move to Southern Europe but the tax rates (income, wealth) put a damper on it. Besides we are still in travel/nomadic phase so not really looking to settle down but being based out of Europe would have made a lot of travel easier. On a related/unrelated note, the handling of th...

India on the other hand.... I've driven or cycled/motorcycled in 58 countries. Nothing is like India. Ha..have to admire your courage motorcycling in India. Re: Need help for touring folding bike
Wow that is a sweet find for $40!! Wish I found a deal like that while looking for our folders.
Wonder why the owner threw it away for just a flat tire, especially in these days of bicycle shortages and all that. Probably prudent to check against stolen bicycle registry, just in case.

There is more to life than death. Very well said.. especially after observing the effect of 2020 on myself as well as my friends/people I know. That is why I don't want to live in a world where Skynet makes the decisions....just because some variable can be measured doesn't mean that it is more rel...

Re: Need help for touring folding bike
The bike is definitely a compromise between ride quality/effort and portability. I can see it really well suited to a city like NYC, Chicago etc (i.e. reasonably flat and multi mode transport needed to get around). If one is primarily a bicyclist who likes to travel, it might not be of much value. B...

Re: Need help for touring folding bike
Finally went ahead and got 2 Brompton H6Rs from a bike shop on Coronado island. Looked at Dahon, Tern, Decathlon etc also but in the end the elegant fold size of the Brompton won us over. They are not light though thanks to the steel frame. Got them in the 6 gear version with reduced gearing. They h...

Re: Bitcoin on the rise
If you don't want money supply to be "the stress valve," the real economy will be. Indeed, hence my concern about Bitcoin etc performing the role of money in society. It seems to me more like how an engineer would design something with some excellent technical properties but the customer ...

Admittedly I don't understand a whole lot about cryptocurrency and bitcoin. However the part I struggle with is considering potential implications of a cryptocurrency like bitcoin on the Monetary and indirectly the Fiscal policy powers of the Central Bank and Governments respectively. I mean governm...
