Re: A Romanian's FI Journey

After 11 days in Bucharest, 11 in Brasov, 9 in Subiu, 4 in Alba Iulia we will be in Cluj Napoca for 10 days.

By the time we leave Romania, we would have spent 2 very pleasant months here.

Re: Audio books

Last Heard: 'Tis by Frank McCourt and narrated by the author. I know I've enjoyed an audiobook when I try and speak like the author...kind of like developing a hankering for pasta and making my own tomato sauce after watching too many goomba movies and speaking in that manner... sometimes to the amu...

Re: A Romanian's FI Journey

Adrian - thank you for your suggestions...much appreciated. Some of these I had intended to do while others I hadn't heard of. I find that there is not a whole bunch of info on Romania out there ( say unlike Croatia)...but that also makes this trip interesting. If we make it to Cluj Napoca, we'll be...

Re: A Romanian's FI Journey

@Adrian- Congrats on your ERE journey. I am currently visiting Bucharest and staying just on the north side of Old Town and slightly south of Univ of Bucharest. Just wanted to say that I have been quite impressed with what I have seen so far, didn't know what to expect coming in but the food (I'm li...

Re: Why Index Funds Are Like Subprime CDOs

Life is more complex, nuanced and richer than just ERE. People are not just their MBTIs and investing (and choices we make in life) is much to do with the investor himself than stock analysis and numbers...though that is very very important. Here is Mr Mental Models himself on Donald Trump in 2011: ...

Re: Housesitting

@anesde From my observations, over and above individual tendencies it has something to do with trust level in different cultures (obviously prompted by history, general level of material affluence, legal structures and existing norms). From what someone once mentioned to me, Spain, Portugal or indee...

Re: Why Index Funds Are Like Subprime CDOs

Also with CDOs...Burry was busy meeting banks and getting them to draw up individual contracts even while they were laughing behind his back and at his face. Here he is talking about it. Big difference to me. So does he have the conviction to short the index like he did the CDOs instead of picking l...

Re: Why Index Funds Are Like Subprime CDOs

So what is the average wannabe EREr to do besides some diversification into indexes, real estate, gold, questionable loan to cousin Vinny? If most folks have to become investment analysts to achieve/sustain FI...might just be better to stay at work. From a portfolio perspective probably hold a littl...

Re: Housesitting

Key thing is to reply quickly to the opening... especially in a popular/competitive area as they will get inundated with responses. I think most homeowners would be understanding of an overlap and as long as you ensure pets are taken care of properly and are upfront about any such issues. In these k...

Re: Housesitting

Yes, money is in that range if offered... oftentimes by those who are new to having housesitters or the overly apologetic and polite types. But as I mentioned we quash the money question before it gets out of the gate pretty much. Also we tend to prefer sits much more oriented to pets than property ...

Re: Housesitting

We've done over 40 housesits in almost 4 years in the US and overseas. From multi month to a week. Have had almost always good to great experiences. Have not paid rent or utilities in the past 4 yrs ... certainly paid hotel, camping, gas and airfare. Some points I can mention from our experience and...

After 3 plus yrs on a Microsoft Lumia 640 which I really liked, switched to Android and so far after 3 months really liking the Google Pixel 3a XL. Wanted something that would replace a camera (Sony rx100 ver 1) for traveling. Perhaps a good phone option for those wanting decent camera functionality...

Re: Dealing with abuse at work

@OP Given that you are going to be leaving soon, your course of action seems wise. However there will always be bullies in life and at some point you will have to deal with them. Bullies can come in the form of peers, family members, employers and even spouses/bf/gf. So in the long run, there is no ...

Re: Dealing with abuse at work

@ Real Person @ Lemur Well yes. Certainly when I was there 1989-1993. It used to be even worse in the years before that. I'm sure some variant of nasty behavior is still going on there despite increasing use of technology (CCTV, cellphone photo evidence and overall move in society towards more 'snow...

Re: Dealing with abuse at work

My $0.02 to the OP The fact that someone in your office can openly do this makes me think you don't have the respect of the people there (unless you are juniormost and this is just 'normal' hazing in the company or the bully is an important person in the company) How come you've put yourself in such...

Re: NZ Shooter used the term overton window in manifesto

I noticed how little coverage was there for the Sri Lanka coordinated attack killing 350 plus vs the New Zealand shooting toll of 50 of a whacko gunman. Or hardly anything about the Nigerian religious killings this year of almost 300. Seems like the mainstream media outlets only promote one type of ...

Re: Managing body weight - and a possible simple solution?

Yes, while these are all viable methods depending on circumstance...I was referring more to simple early warning system that could just be a part of the wardrobe. Of course once the alarm goes off, there are different solutions- fasting, exercising, diet modification etc. Often times the challenge i...

Re: Poll: What kind of watch do you own?

Casio GShock GW300 bought from Costco in 2003. Since then the elements have eaten the outside shell (I wore it all the time including showers) and the 10 yr solar battery has given out. I ripped out the rest if the outer shell exposing the red inner shell and replaced the worn straps for $11. Replac...
