Re: How to protect your retirement from your parents

This situation is quite a close one to home for me and something I am in the thick of grappling with now. Very stressful. I made a post on it earlier and then deleted it because of the personal nature and concerns anyone might identify it. I have a very complex familial situation which makes these t...

Re: How do you dry your clothes?

In the dryer.

Drying clothes inside is very bad for air quality. Increases humidity and mould etc. Better if you cant dry outside to use a dryer ventilated to the exterior. I think its not worth scrimping on health to save a few bucks

Re: SoCal Will Journal

Thanks, that's good advice.

Yes it can easily become a bit of an obsession, at times I have entered a strange ironic paradox where I feel guilty and like a failure because I don't live in a van lol

Re: SoCal Will Journal

Interesting, that's a massive increase in NW from $75k at 38 to $900k at 47 only 9 years later! Gives me more hope with things. Am at $250k NW at 37 and feels like I am making stuff all progress, too slow. $250k in NZD btw which is not like USD, maybe more like $190k USD atm because NZD has turned t...

So you lived in a car and a van and a garage. Gosh, wish you were journaling at that stage. Would have been interesting to read. You pre-dated the rest of us with your extremity

Re: How to move to USA...?

I see NZ mentioned a couple of times. I don't recommend coming here. The pay is not high and its extremely expensive. Its the basics that cost a lot: food, transport, gas and especially housing. NZ has been ranked as having the most unaffordable housing in the world for the last 3 years in a row. To...

Anxiety and decisions

I think I potentially have some issues with making big decisions. I am wondering what sort of resources to draw upon on changing my thinking habits. I find that when I am faced with a big decision in the early stages I become wildly idealistic and fantasise about how amazing things will be if I make...

Re: Consumption culture in TV

@Jason - that's is such a brilliant show. So funny. But now that you point it out I can really see it. And the woman in that video who I think works in admin talks a lot about her new flash Mercedes and it is showcased quite a bit in one episode. This then makes me think about other shows like Frien...

Consumption culture in TV

It just dawned on me while watching the new series "Raising Dion" how excessive and entitled consumption culture is in TV and how that might perpetuate it and cause such a sense of entitlement among people. I just started watching it and at the beginning the main female character keeps having woe as...

Re: On the risk of investing in real estate for the long run

@flying_pan - It does tend to make them rich in a few ways: - They no longer have big mortgages, or they shouldn't, so they have very low living costs. - Because house prices have gone through the roof, people who bought big multi room houses for peanuts can charge very high rents when they rent out...

Re: Time spent with Friends/Family

I socialise probably one or two times per week. I really got to understand myself the first time I went away travelling. I noticed that I had to move along from backpakers to backpackers reasonably quickly. Because I found I was really excited to meet new people at first each time. But then after a ...

Re: On the risk of investing in real estate for the long run

The real estate issue is a tricky one. A lot of baby boomers in NZ have gotten VERY rich from property and everyone else has gotten VERY poor as a result. Your example is a stark contrast to that of my parents who bought a house for $250k in 1996 and its now worth about $1.8 million. And because the...

Re: Excessive housing costs

Where do low income people live in NZ? They live all over NZ. In the bigger cities they tend to live in the more remote suburbs which is farther from downtown. Still very expensive though in those remote poor suburbs. But generally people tend to reduce their quality of housing. So there will be mo...

Re: Excessive housing costs

@ego that's a good idea. I have thought of that a few times previously but didn't really have any follow through. The extent of my efforts was passive online searches which was never going to go anywhere. I think I should do a more active method of searching. I think direct email is often the best m...

Excessive housing costs

Excessive housing costs to me seems the biggest hurdle in the way of achieving financial independence. EVen though I keep growing wealth the ever escalating costs of housing makes it seem like I am pedalling a race on a stationary bicycle. NZ has been ranked as having the most unaffordable housing i...

Re: Working hours

Ok I am resurrecting this subject again as I have recently been asked by another company to do some work for them. They found out about my side hustle and started asking questions. The work would probably be another 5 hours per week on average. So I will be doing probably an extra 10 hours a week fo...
