Re: Which covid vaccine would you pick?

@7Wannabe5 What you are saying makes a lot of sense. With respect to viruses mutating in response to vaccines, I agree it is not some "magical force" but rather the normal response in a system that is open and dynamic, where the scenario creates an environment which then become feedback fo...

Re: Which covid vaccine would you pick?

Am I the only one thinking about the possibility that vaccination as a long term strategy (which is where I think our current situation is leading) will eventually relate to a vaccine-resistant virus? I'm foreseeing annual COVID shots similar to the flu shots already being done. I can't help but thi...

Re: Pros and cons of having a second child

For kids, I found going from 0 to 1was a huge and punishing shift for myself and my wife while in contrast, going from 1 to 2 was much easier as most of the groundwork had already been done. Our schedule just got busier managing two kids.

Re: Range by David Epstein

I've started reading this and am enjoying it so far (chapter 1). It seems like he's adding some nuance and context to the 10000 hours/deliberate practice dogma that's become gospel.

I also seem to fit his description of a generalist, so it's heartening to hear that there's some hope for me yet. =)

Re: Looking for a new job

To me a job is an extension of some part of myself. I cannot do a job unless I feel it is congruent with me in some meaningful way. And that's regardless of how much it pays. The bright side is that, rather than eschewing positions that I don't immediately resonate with, I will try to find a way to ...

Re: How can I be healthier and fit?

I think it all falls under 3 categories:
Improve your eating
Increase your activity level
Get a good amount of sleep.

It's simple but not easy to do.
My suggestion would be to make minor changes to your lifestyle. Make it enjoyable.
Good luck.

Re: Naval Ravikant on retirement and other topics

A few takeaways for me: 1. Having the mindset of the entrepreneur makes sense as ERE people are similarly intertwined in life, money and purpose. 2. The third path of 'retirement' which was doing something you love, where work is not work for you but play 3. How the challenge of modern society is ho...

Re: Naval Ravikant on retirement and other topics

Initially, I was a little wary of his approach. Reading his tweet storm, I thought it was geared more towards tech startups but hearing him explain things I see it as more generally applicable albeit still towards the more entrepreneurially minded. Also, his knowledge of ERE made me think he's lurki...

Re: Dealing with abuse at work

Agreed. I like the idea that after that 6 months or whatever, you really have nothing to lose and whole lot to gain from figuring out how you can assert yourself in these types of situation. (Which will definitely happen again in the future) I have really irritating neighbors at my workplace and for...

Stoicism for the win! I hope.
Good luck with it and I'm glad you decided not to resort to getting management involved.

Re: Side business experience

Thanks for sharing Sclass.
I think these kinds of ventures are an interesting aspect of ERE and something I'm definitely interested in exploring as a way to diversify income streams. It's nice to hear that it's possible from someone who isn't trying to sell you something. =)

Re: Jordan Peterson

To be honest, I don't really trust the article you mentioned given JBP's treatment by the media. I'll watch it once it's free online. That's the beauty of this modern age. I can engage with the material directly and just judge for myself. There's no need for an interlocuter giving me their pablum ve...

Re: Intellectual Dark Web

I see the IDW as being individuals who are actually interested in honest, good faith discussion. What I really enjoy about their conversations is how different their ideas can be and yet, they still have a stimulating conversation where each is working with the other to try and further their underst...

Re: Dealing with abuse at work

I'm sure this person enjoys making you feel small. Probably because they are bad with money and generally suck at life. I think the best response is to be good natured and jovial about it to show him it doesn't bother you. And it doesn't need to. Screw this guy. But it can also show everyone else th...

Re: Resources and recommend watching

Unconventional investment style that focuses on preservation of capital, etc. I got some Harry Browne-ish vibes, but clearly different. Some interesting intersections with ERE ideas of wealth/capital and "enduring over the long term" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a4_U6bS-cU4 I found tha...

Re: Jordan Peterson

I seriously doubt you will find anything remotely close.
Most of the criticisms I have read about him have very little connection to what he's actually said or written. Instead, they tend to be based on ideas people attribute to him based on articles they've read about him.

Re: Join the Family Business or strike out on my own?

Unless you are willing to dedicate years of your life to this project for little or no money, I wouldn't do it. And by dedicate, I mean, be completely ruled by the needs of the business. That's generally the truth of owning and running your own business. The rosy points you mentioned are true to som...

Another good one: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Li2J4GxZ6iM With Eric Weinstein and David Rubin I'm in the middle of watching it but so far I'm enjoying the differing frameworks that Eric and Jordan use when seeing the world. The stuff I enjoy the most with Jordan Peterson is when he is engaging w...

Re: Puking Rainbows' Journal

ERE and JBP I’ve wondered how these two things interact and wanted to articulate my thoughts through writing. I came to ERE because I was fed up with the consumerism that I saw swallowing up people’s lives. The way people worked so hard to make so much money so they could waste it as quickly as poss...
