Re: US Apartment sizes are shrinking

In Italy it isn't common at all to have in-wall storage, while in Paris for example it's fairly common (in older buildings) Sorry, wanted to tug on this thread a bit more even though it's buried. I've lived in places with both approaches - in Aus, older places tend to rely on furniture (freestandin...

Re: COVID model - Bio stats observations and questions

I'm genuinely puzzled as to why OP thinks #3 on his list results in more mutations than any other path. Shouldn't #1 be the path to more mutations? Resistance to the disease following vaccination is stronger than resistance following a natural infection, as I understand it.

Re: Internationalist

COVID-19 is now way out of control here in Thailand (Bangkok especially) with case numbers setting new records daily. The latest outbreak started in April. It hung at around 1000 cases a day for a long while, then gradually edged up to 2000 a day, and it seemed like measures to keep a lid on it were...

Please excuse the random interjection to your journal, but tennis strikes me as the kind of sport I'd like to get my kids involved in. These observations may not be valid, since I myself haven't ever been a tennis player, but: - Infrastructure costs seem like they shouldn't be too high, and courts a...

Re: Seppia's journal

After doing well in 2020, large parts of this region are now really struggling. Thailand has now lost the fight to contain COVID, and Viet Nam is also looking poorly just now. Australia is on edge, it could very well lose its chance to get back to near-zero COVID in this current outbreak. And vaccin...

Re: Remote Work - life implications

I've not really adapted well to wfh unfortunately. Sure, no commute is good. Being able to get dinner on the stove earlier is good. But I'm feeling quite isolated from colleagues, and struggling to find any connection with the abstract work that I do, when it's all conducted over Teams and email. I'...

Re: What is Money and how does it come to be?

Yes, banks create money . Another source Your examples are pretty convoluted, and I'm not sure how to pick out exactly what you're asking from those... But I think the answer you're looking for, essentially, is that yes, commercial banks create money. Perhaps when looking at your complicated example...

Re: Stoa Presentation: A Systems Approach To Resilient Lifestyle Design

I just got around to watching the presentation. Thought it was great. I particularly liked that it didn't focus on the 'retirement' or 'build enough wealth to live off dividends' threads. A few people upthread noted the brilliance of the 'spectrum' diagram with the peaks and troughs showing yield an...

@ertyu I'm in Bangkok. Yep, living in developing countries can be cheap depending on your standards... But if you want to live at wealthy country standards in a developing country, and particularly if you need to use an international school, it may well not be cheaper. For single guys or gals who do...

Re: Internationalist

So here we are in February 2021, and I make another of my intermittent updates. Thailand is turning out to be more expensive than I’d anticipated. In terms of not-predicted expenses, it’s the preschool my daughter attends and also groceries. Yes, the rent is pretty expensive, but I’m not remarking o...

I went to safety razors for a while but would tend to cut myself a little every now and then. I've gone back to the mach 3 cartridge razors just because they've been the default since I was younger and they're easy to use. Also, the double-edge blades (and Amazon!) are not available everywhere. My &...

Hmmm. I have balcony space and DW wants (me too, I guess) foliage and healthy plants. I hadn't really considered composting on a balcony, but it makes sense. I should look into this...

Re: Are you an athlete? How do I become an athlete?

a) Do you train intentionally in your sport, with a definite goal in mind? b) Do you compete, in more than a "just for fun" sense? If both, then you're probably an athlete. I think it's possible to have a xor b and probably still not fulfil my sense of being an athlete. If you're training ...

Of course we want to know expenses! That is definitely an eye-watering rental. I thought my real estate costs were bad! Looking forward to your adventures in Japanese cooking. I didn't realise that Bangkok (where I am) was so stacked with Japanese expats - but it is* - and similarly, DW told me we o...

Long term food storage in hot climate

I moved to Bangkok. It's hot here all year. I've lived in places that have hotter summers, but nowhere that is hot like this year-round.. My apartment has a separate kitchen, not an open-plan like has been in vogue for, if I'm not mistaken, my whole life. In order to avoid air-conditioning more spac...

Hi everyone. The journal has been abandoned for a while but I’m still around. I’ve now relocated to Thailand. Re: 1 Jacob Adjusted For Inflation (JAFI)

Insofar you create a parasitic class, this is just a wealth transfer from those who didn't bother to save (in the total stock market) to those who did. This is kind of boomer thinking though, because there are also generational effects. The people coming of age in this market did not have an opport...

I remember talking to someone that thought the vietnam war was caused because the US wanted vietnam's natural resources. I just let it pass but I regret not asking if that was taught in schools and whether they thought it also had to do with communism vs. capitalism. This is definitely my experienc...

I'm still following news for Australia even though I'm not there and it looks like I won't be able to visit family for quite some time. A few things are really interesting to me in that some of the restrictions I find fairly unexpected. Maybe of interest to those in the USA - of course, although our...

Re: What are you doing during the confinement ?

I'm wfh now but in Addis Ababa that's quite limiting, because both internet (solely on my phone, no fixed line) and electricity are unreliable. But, like SustainableHappines, I've two young kids. Roughly 1yo and 4yo. So in practice it alternates between calming down one from fits of frustration and ...
