Re: Solar power

I'm kinda wondering if that is actually the case. That's a fair point Jacob, I was thinking more along the lines of it being unable to support conventional space heating in a 100m2 home. But there is certainly some scope for heating the person, in fact before investigating the Kelly kettle and hot ...

Re: Solar power

I have a 3x100W solar array which is in part inspired by Kris De Deckers low tech magazine apartment setup. Solar PV without a task is wasteful, so you need to always make hay while the sun shines. It's not cost effective unless you put all that energy to good use. My system paired with a 1200Wh por...

For anyone interested, I didn't know about battlescribe being removed from app stores, but APK files are still likely available. A quick Google revealed a couple of possible alternatives, plus discussion that the PC app still works, and the people who manage the data are releasing their own app to r...

Re: Wargaming

The new rulesets keep the game fresh and address balance issues. Some players don't really consider that viable in the long run, but it's a good option for a frugal group. Players who want to play with new units wouldn't be able to use them in older rule sets, I think that would be the main issue fo...

Re: vexed's ERE journey from the very beginning!

Quick update. How time flies. Low expenses means I have been able to take a further reduction in working hours AND pay. I now work from home (off-setting most of the cut in pay) for a charity. I won't go into finer details for obvious privcy reasons, but the savvy among you could probably figure it ...

Just to say I attended the first run of this course during the first wave of UK lockdowns, and if nothing else, I took away a reading list as long as my forearm, but I enjoyed the guest speakers and Q&A tremendously, and left the STF course with some great social contacts and renewed vigour to p...

Re: Choosing a moutain bike

Gravel tyres can most definitely handle technical terrain, the only question is what tyre clearance is supported by your frame? You would be surprised how well road bikes can cope with even 28mm tyres. Most modern road bikes would take at least 28mm tyres. My most recent purchase takes a 38mm tyre, ...

Re: vexed's ERE journey from the very beginning!

We are all very happy and are in good health thank you. We moved house (again) in October 2019 just before the pandemic (perfect timing.) Shortly after the UK house market exploded in the race for space/flight from big cities. We relocated near a great school for DD, but have a bigger mortgage to sh...

Re: Digital Minimalism?

I have found the right balance in these last 2 years. I quit facebook a few years ago now because the superficial nature of interaction bored me, I stopped posting first, then went nuclear and deleted everything. That felt good. Twitter scrolling took over for a while, until I realised I'd just subb...

Re: video editing apple computer?

The problems I have had in windows tended to be hardware related quirks, rather than a reflection of OS specifically. So, you'll probably get a wide range of experiences from one poorly thought out pre-built device to another. Apple's rigid hardware ecosystem pretty much negates this problem I guess...

Re: video editing apple computer?

+1 vote for smashing those imaginary apple ecosystem barriers and saving $$$. Even with a high spec custom build and spendy display, you're going to be quids in. Windows 10 isn't that bad once you get used to it. I kind like it now! :nerd: As for the display, the pixel density of retina displays is ...

Re: COVID-19

Admin work in hospitals are usually completed by 9-5 Monday to Friday office (non-clinical) staff. I'm not familiar with the reporting system for C-19, but databases I work with used for reporting to the govt. here in UK don't refresh until midnight. So we're probably looking at early Tuesday before...

Re: COVID-19

With this in mind, why is the UK government building 7 new field hospitals with a potential capacity of over 10k beds and ordering tens of thousands of ventilators? It seems to me that either: They didn't overreact, those plans were put in motion incase the worst case scenario panned out. If liftin...

Re: COVID-19

I think I caught COVID-19 a couple of weeks ago, but the UK is not testing widely, only those admitted to hospital, so I can't be certain. I didn't felt very unwell, just a mild cold-like bug all of last week. First I noticed a sore throat, headache, a slight runny nose, a very short period of nause...
