Re: Smaller is better

I don't understand how we came to have this culture of everything being jumbo-sized. People seem to accept it as normal to have a garbage bin the size of a small child or a cooking pot the size of a large infant. I think it might be an American influence, and it might also be linked to sales/market...

Re: Homebrew ROi

I have an all grain setup. It's definitely paying for itself, with 4x330ml cans of my favoured style (NEIPA) costing upwards of £7 at the local convenience store. I can produce 40L batches, arguably fresher, higher quality and better tasting beer about £1.40/ UK pint (568ml) for a hop forward style ...

Re: Roasting Coffee at Home

@guitarplayer, they probably do deliver to Scotland. Lalico coffee and North Star are my go to roasters. The latter (which is £££) is on my doorstep (40min each way by bike) but since I work office hours, I get delivery instead. I don't mind the premium price on the local roaster since it's an ethic...

Re: Roasting Coffee at Home

Since I buy my coffee online for postal delivery, I usually keep a stock of green beans in the cupboard to tide me over between deliveries, I don't have a subscription because that leads to early or late delivery due to fluctuations in consumption. My supplier offers discount on green beans vs roast...

The Psychological Drivers of the Metacrisis

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uA5GV-XmwtM&t=0s I found this conversation a pleasure so thought I would share it here. "The Psychological Drivers of the Metacrisis" features a discussion with John Vervaeke, Iain McGilchrist, and Daniel Schmachtenberger. They explore the psychological ...

Re: Sedentary indoor cold wear

I picked up one of those heated jackets/gillets with the flexible heating elements built into the lining of the garment powered by a USB cable. Mine consumes up to 11w while switched on. You could plug it directly into a phone charger with a long cable, or as I do, carry a battery bank in an interna...

Re: Lentil Appreciation + Recipe Thread

Can somebody please explain to me how I can get the legumes I bought back in my 2014 pepper phase to tenderise, why did I ever think that buying a 1kg tub of chickpeas would keep me from starving when SHTF nearly 10 years later. My pressure cooker won't even soften them up. 😅 Edit: In all seriousnes...

Re: Make Stuff Log

Thanks for the additional details @AH, yeah I have some sort of enclosure system in mind, but I'm not exactly sure what that will look like yet. I'll report back when it's finished. So I tried this morning with an aluminium tray, and noticed that it quickly heated up directly above the heating eleme...

Re: GTD Getting Things Done for ERE People

Regarding prioritisation in Asana, I can think of multiple ways,I'm not sure what is restricted by the licence model, but you could add a custom data field and label appropriately, and use tags, sort by due date, or numbering of some sort. If you don't sort tasks in any way you can also reorder them...

Re: GTD Getting Things Done for ERE People

I have added read GTD to my to do list, I hope I read it sometime soon to remind myself to read it (kidding, thanks for the recommendation). I think Asana would work great for this. I think there is a free version useful for individuals, I use it a lot for my proffesional work, great for herding a t...

Re: Make Stuff Log

@AH, what kind of power supply are you using? Any plans to tidy up the probe switch? I have one exactly the same on another project and know they are a vulnerable to having the wires yanked out (annoyance/fire risk?), which seems like something that might happen often with stray feet. Seems like a g...

Re: Solar power

I'm kinda wondering if that is actually the case. That's a fair point Jacob, I was thinking more along the lines of it being unable to support conventional space heating in a 100m2 home. But there is certainly some scope for heating the person, in fact before investigating the Kelly kettle and hot ...

Re: Solar power

I have a 3x100W solar array which is in part inspired by Kris De Deckers low tech magazine apartment setup. Solar PV without a task is wasteful, so you need to always make hay while the sun shines. It's not cost effective unless you put all that energy to good use. My system paired with a 1200Wh por...

Re: Wargaming

The new rulesets keep the game fresh and address balance issues. Some players don't really consider that viable in the long run, but it's a good option for a frugal group. Players who want to play with new units wouldn't be able to use them in older rule sets, I think that would be the main issue fo...
