Re: Brooks: "The Nuclear Family was a Mistake"

Just want to point out Brooks is in no way a leftist. He is a conservative/Republican for the most part. The mistake is that the nuclear family is not enough support for its harried members, particularly the parents. Also, it is no longer the model the vast majority can attain. Reasons why are less ...

Re: Hristo's FI Journal

Well I wouldn't add a full bathroom so the kids don't have to share but I would do it bc it will increase the value of your home. And if you have overnight guests it will come in handy.

Re: Brooks: "The Nuclear Family was a Mistake"

I read this article a couple days ago. A bit long-winded, but a good historical overview. I remember he said that there was a pseudo-extended family during the golden age of the middle-class (50s and 60s) in the sense that neighborhoods were places where families looked after each other as well as t...

Re: Anyone had a will done? Suggestions?

@ID: Thanks for the suggestions. The couple is the most capable and financially savvy of any of the candidates though, so I think it would only complicate things or introduce downside to involve anyone else. They're not as frugal as I am but that doesn't matter in the big scheme of things. I read so...

Re: Anyone had a will done? Suggestions?

@The Old Man: Ok, I agree the story SClass outlined was fascinatingly sketchy. But do not call him names! If you ever read the saga of his family, you would understand he was the only one in the entire family who gave a rat's ass about his mother, taking on years of her end-of-life care by himself. ...

Gosh, glad you're ok EK! Sorry to hear about the surgery.
Definitely prioritize you. And definitely accept and ask for help. I always say it's a blessing to be able to help someone. Don't deprive others of blessings.

Re: Anyone had a will done? Suggestions?

Thank you all! Very interesting experiences and numbers. Looks like I have some reading to do. And some calling to do to see how our assets are set up. I do not want to pay anyone 3-4k for this. I was thinking 1k would be my max. So I'm guessing they will laugh me out of the office, but that's fine....

Re: Wuhan Coronavirus

I dunno. Is that story about a student from China? Or an Asian American. There is a big difference. Indeed the red Chinese students form a clique in the universities. Hey, how come that whistleblower doctor died? He was 34 and healthy. That’s impossible! It's both groups that are being 'avoided' fo...

Re: I tire of gold and trinkets: MidwestCoder's Journal

Some like Dave Ramsey advocate putting extra money towards debt rather than investment first. I mention this because you said you and your wife max out your 401ks, which I’m guessing means you put in beyond company matching. May be worth considering, even with the tax advantages. Would you take out ...

Anyone had a will done? Suggestions?

I have a free consultation with a lawyer next week about estate planning. I’m sure they will say we need a will bc that’s what they do. Especially if you have kids, how did you handle this? And how much if anything did you pay for the legal work? We know who we would want to take guardianship (a sib...

Re: Wuhan Coronavirus

@peanut To go OT a bit further, when I was a kid, I had a neighbor who by general acclamation was the nicest person around. She was also constantly at our door, talking loudly, using our backyard for gardening (blowing past my window constantly), pressuring me to get into her particular kind of fid...

Re: Wuhan Coronavirus

Point of fact in my neighborhood white guys buying 2x4s are most likely going to be immigrant Slavs. What is the monolithic entity? Whiteness? My reference point was Asian Americans in Cali I was not trying to accuse anyone of racism btw. I was just annoyed by erytu's post. I think engagement of the...

Re: Early 40s, past stumbles, but could be worse

Pets can easily cost way more than young kids imo, though probably not older kids. After three dogs and five surgeries, next time pet insurance is a must for us.

What would you spend 80k on? Does that include college tuition?

Re: Wuhan Coronavirus

Oh please, Sclass was not harassing anybody. Why do you assume they are esl speakers anyway? He’s in Cali, there are tons of third-gen Asian Americans there as well as immigrants. And they will perhaps be more paranoid about transmission if they live and move among other ethnic Chinese.

Re: Moving in with a significant other

Riggerjack shared: "I know I have lived with women I had no intention of marrying, and many of the younger men I have known have been in the same boat. I'm sure this also applies to women, but perhaps less commonly." Nothing personal, but this is just one reason why I would strongly discourage any d...

Re: Moving in with a significant other

We've also both acknowledge that, for us, moving in together would be a step toward being more serious and committed. I don't see any reason why not to move in together. This note of caution is geared towards heteronormative couples, particularly those who are young and never been married before, s...

Re: Learning a musical instrument inexpensively?

It isn’t clear to me from your description if you can already read music? I know there are famous guitarists who don’t but in general I’d recommend learning to do it. So if not I would work on that first. Being able to sightread and sightsing are invaluable components of musicality. As for a program...

Definitely keep it. Are your parents still alive? How would they take it if they found out? There's a chance it will go up in value over time, also. And your kids might want to wear it even if you don't.

Some gold is good to have too.

Re: Setting the table

A few options. I don't know what oilcloth is exactly but from online it looks like a laminated tablecloth? It seems practical but I would also recommend cotton or blend tablecloths. I spot treat with oxy and almost everything comes out. I use a dustbuster for crumbs if there are too many. Come to th...
