Re: Coworking alternatives?

I write around 20 articles or so per month, so I spend a considerable amount of time on the laptop writing. I looked into coworking spaces but I, too, found them prohibitively expensive for what you're getting. I tend to work out of a local coffee shop. Most sell bottled water. Have you not consider...

Re: spoonman's Journal

I have a serious crush on Portland, partly because of you, Spoonman. :)

I've gotta make it out there some day and check it out for myself. Seems like just an awesome city.

Thanks for the pictures. Cannon Beach is beautiful.

Re: Any Portlanders Out There

@GTOO, Thanks for the information there. Sounds pretty kosher with what I've read about the city. I've gotta check it out sometime for myself, preferably in the winter to see what it's like. I especially like the urban planning regarding the small city blocks and narrow streets. Don't know if I've e...

Re: Any Portlanders Out There

@C40, You visited at the ultimate time. I hear the summer is about as "perfect" as it gets for most people. The other nine months per year are what I'm worried about. Similar sunlight levels to what I remember experiencing in Michigan, which is to say little in the wintertime. But the mild...

Any Portlanders Out There

Portlanders? Portlandites? Portlandians? Not sure what to call you guys! :) Anyway, I've been thinking of where to go next after I'm tired of living here in SW Florida (approaching that point now) and I've been strongly considering Portland. I haven't been there, so basing all my research/theories/i...

Re: Move Based on Taxes?

FRx, What do you think of Portland? That might be one of the most "Europeanesque" cities in the US, from what I can tell. The rainy weather, high state income tax, and relatively high (relative to Sarasota, FL) COL keeps me on the sidelines from considering a move there. But it does seem l...

Re: Wedding rings/bands for men

FWIW, we did a tungsten carbide ring for me. These can be had for well under $100 and they're extremely difficult to damage/scratch. And I like the heavy feel of them.

Re: spoonman's Journal

A walkscore of 97? Awesome! Enjoy your time in Montreal. The big Canadian cities all seem to always score very high on the quality of life rankings. If it weren't for that brutal weather they get in the winter, it would seem like the place to be. Though, if you could live there for six months during...

Re: Move Based on Taxes?

I moved from Michigan to Florida back in 2009 in part to avoid state income taxes. One of the best decisions I ever made. MI taxes north of 4%, so at $50k that's more than $150 per month. Factor in a lower cost of living and more income down here and it seriously helped me get on the right track. In...

Re: How long did it take to reach your first 100k? Howbout the second 100k?

It took me about three years to hit my first $100k. That was on a pretty modest salary that I earned at a car dealership. I'm $85k into the second hundred thousand less than two years down the road. I don't really look at principle/net worth as my barometer of success, but that's been my experience ...

Wanted to come over to the ERE forums and officially scream "CONGRATS!!!!!!!!!" :) I realized I never came over here and did that. The blog/writing keeps me busy sometimes. I think it's so cool that you two are living off of your dividend income. It's something I'm aiming to do, but you gu...

Blogger Insurance?

I know there are some on this forum that also blog either as a side hustle or as a primary revenue source, so I'm hoping someone might be able to offer me some suggestions. I've recently been strongly thinking about ways to insure my personal property against any issues that may come up due to writi...

Re: A Skeptic Wrote an Article about EER

Yeah, his article was mostly a direct attack on me. I generally don't really mind the noise, but this one kind of pissed me off coming from a fellow personal finance blogger. Then I poked around the rest of the site and realized what an a**hole I was dealing with. His premise is mostly a joke, so I ...

Wow! Really impressed. Great job! You guys have lived a hell of a life. Setting off for great adventures every few years is an interesting contrast to the "save for x years, then set off" kind of mentality that I and many others follow. Good to see you guys taking life by the proverbial ho...

Re: Too Good To Pass Up?

Thanks everyone for the suggestions! I decided to buy the car. It was a steal. The elderly woman I purchased it from was the original owner, and I verified that at the local Toyota dealership (where she's serviced it since new). I thought about flipping it, but decided to sell the Escort and drive t...

Too Good To Pass Up?

Hey everyone! I recently came upon the opportunity to potentially purchase a 2006 Toyota Corolla with 20,000 miles for $5,400. My girlfriend still keeps in touch with a former co-worker. This co-worker lives next to a woman who is a caretaker for an elderly woman who is 87 and has cancer. Her driver...

Wow, I haven't posted on here in a while.

I bought more DLR a little over a week ago for $54.75 per share.

I bought shares in MO yesterday for $34.52 per share.

I also like XOM and IBM at current prices.

Re: Transportation Survey

I sold my car back in mid-2011 and haven't really looked back. It's tough to get around in a smaller city like the one I live in (about 50k people). I use the bus for most of my transportation needs. I also have a 49cc scooter for local errands and also for times when the bus is late or doesn't show...

<t>@Scott2,<br/> Thanks for all the info there! <br/> The guy who was basically rocking out and only making $60k/year is pretty eye-opening. That's probably all you need to know about the kind of money you'd expect to make doing this. This is exactly why I figured I'd be taking a 50% pay cut, or mor...
